It is a little easier to hockey stop when the ice is more soft and well skated on. It is harder to do it on fresh hard ice like you did in this video =)

Peter Negan not necessarily. The technique is the same for both. On the clean ice you will pick up more speed and this can cause some people to become nervous and then execute the move incorrectly as their body is tight and locked up. On ice that has been skated on a lot (like during a public session) you will go a little slower, but this ice is full of grooves of where everyone else has skated. If your blade catches a deep groove at a certain angle when doing a hockey stop, you will fall quite hard and may hurt yourself. Be extra careful when skating at high speed and trying to stop abruptly on rough ice. Hope this helps

Oh well, hockey stops I can do. Also hockey stops on 1 foot, both inside and outside both legs I can do just fine. It is all the your other videos I watched that I really struggle with. I've only used my figure skates 7 times now, and I'm way too shy to ask any of the girls at the rink for advices. Funny story the first time I tried them out there was a old fat russian lady coach at the bench that yelled me over. She said "You hockey player" and I said yeah you got me, and she said something like tell those other hockey players to stay away from the corner her daughter were jumping at because it is dangerous. And I was like trying avoid that topic of conversation because I did not want to make any troubles at all. Then she said "Why you dancing?" and I was a bit shocked and tried to explain I wasn't dancing I was just not trying to fall over as it was my first time ever on figure skates. Tehn I left and ignored her, I thought she was crazy, but my guess is she tought I was crazy also =)

I'm sure the people in your ice rink would be more than happy to give you some advice. It sounds like you had an unfortunate experience meeting that particular coach on your first time in figure skates.....we're not all like that! I think that once you get used to your figure skates you will find some of the tutorials we are posting easier due the the shape of blade. You can do a lot in Hockey Skates, I know a lot of people that do. But I also know a lot of people that reached a certain point and then switched to figure skates so that they could do even more.

When the ice is rough and cut up it can be quite dangerous. Some people can think that it's safer as you move slower across it, but in reality it can be more dangerous. Let us know if you have and questions :)

I don’t agree that you mustn’t turn your upper body. I can do a high speed hockey stop, with my entire body turning sideways. In fact for hockey it is better, as it allows you to take off in the opposite direction. Also for hockey keeping the feet further apart helps provide stability, since there are some large chaps who like to bump into you. Good video though.

Yes , as you twist your hips your feet should go into the correct position. Another thing that really helped me with my upper body was to look at something straight ahead .Hope this helps

I would not call this a how to for beginners … what about those that are nervous to even put there foot out that far in front and twist it in the first place how do you get them to even commence that ??

work on skating on a single foot (glide along doing long pushes) and then work on a T stop. This will get you comfortable in moving feet/legs around. Hockey stop really isn;t a beginner move, but its explained in a way that a beginner can understand.

topazzz79 what is a t stop ? Perhaps a retitle on this vid would be to your advantage :-) I also saw some else comment that you used figures skates massive difference to hockey skates as the blade is 1 mm thinner as a standard and does not have the length your figure skate blade has and does not have the wedges at the front of the skate and they are shorter and rounded at both ends. While you may say that doesn’t matter it does because of the points I mention and what about the hollow of the blade what is the easiest hollow to learn this on as a beginner .

U have to do them while holding the wall, I tried learning the plow stop in two sessions and managed to master it after 4 hours , u gotta slowly progress and turn your ankles fast

Yep. Hockey stop is the name of the move he needs to do in figure skates. it's taught in basic figure skating level 4 (Gamma)

In order to scrape the ice you must lean your skates slightly inward (towards your body) but don't take this too far. Skates shouldn't be too far fromthe vertical line or your edges will get stuck on the ice and you'll fall

Advanced figure skaters can do this stop on one foot. The supporting leg is the one the opposite the direction of movement.

Not going to lie dude. Your instruction is vague and lacking a lot of detail. For something that requires a lot of detail and muscle memory your instruction sucks. After 2:30 your telling people to jump into the hockey stop? Not only is this irresponsible, it's dangerous.
