Finally got how this was supposed to be done. I wasn't doing the right stitch across the backside,(One roll knit, one roll purl. I just kept knitting and couldn't figure it out why I wasn't getting a smooth front) but now that I've seen how to properly do it I was able to do this stitch. Thank you!

This happens with stockinette stitch. Try blocking once you're done!
