You wanna play like Stevie? Live with a guitar in your hands every waking moment of the day. Ignore everything else. Jam as often as possible. Hang around other guitar players and watch them. Do what other, better players are doing and emulate them. Live, sleep, eat and breath guitar, 24-7!

Isnt life strange. This guy plays like this and fights for views and some numbskull does a stupid little dance like the floss and gets millions of views. Humans have become rabid consumers of everything easy to digest without having to pass thru your brain. Like the baby that watches the carousel over his crib and clapping and laughing each time it makes a noise. That is now the adult world we live in.

Stevie was unquestionably great. What I love the most about him, is he was an original. He was inspired by others yeah, but he didn’t try to bite their style. His power AND finesse was crazy. We’re all lucky to have had such a great musician bless us with his music

@ciaranw5203 жыл бұрын
I understand what you're saying, but he would literally play Albert King licks note for note..
@BelowAverageGuitarist3 жыл бұрын
He was inspired by Albert King, no doubt. In fact id even say he idolized him. A lot of Albert King licks are only 2-3 notes to begin with, though. There is a lot of AK stuff I haven’t dissected, but it seems to me that SRV had better chops and a more extensive lick vocabulary. That being said, there are only so many notes and licks you can play in any given key. Besides, they loved and respected each other and that’s beautiful. Both are great as far as I’m concerned
@ciaranw5203 жыл бұрын
@@BelowAverageGuitarist Without doubt my man. He did idolise him. SRV without doubt had better chops and a more extensive lick library. I just mean that so many of SRVs best solos are built around that Albert King, second box, bend/release lick that it would be odd to say that he didn't bite into another artists style, because more often than not, they were copied note for note. Having said that, like you said in your original comment, his power was crazy. He did those Albert King licks - albeit the same note for note - with more power. Also on higher gauge strings! The extra gain he used probably helped too.

One thing i'v noticed Thom when various people describe Stevies tone is that they forget to mention that Stevie often played in the 'in between ' p/ups -i.e neck & middle position. He doesn't on numbers like 'so exciting' - often played on neck p/up. You played that VERY like Stevie ! If i close my eyes i would swear it was Stevie 👍😉🎸😎

It's all in the right hand. Stevie's right hand was a constant sledgehammer. Songs like Rude Mood and Pride and Joy and Cold Shot are as much about the right hand as the left. I never really even thought about it because as a teenager I just copied him so much but I was playing around an older guy and he was seeing me play Pride and Joy and he was like "Man how do you keep your right hand doing like that???" and I was like "well I never really thought about it...." but it's all in the right hand. John Mayer also said "you might capture that intensity of Stevie for a few moments a night but Stevie MAINTAINED that intensity and that's the difference!" Very true words.
