Totally agree. I'm 60 this year and aiming for a sub 3hr marathon in October. Your not old until you stop

@@alanshrimpton6787 Exactly Alan!!! Sub 3h, wow!!! Impressive!! I bet you do your weights as Brodie keeps reminding us, I sure do!! I didn’t even start running until I was 57 thanks to the Covid lockdown, and now at 60 I JUST missed out on a sub 4h marathon by 1min last April … next time!! I am doing my first 50k ultra tomorrow though 😁😬🥴😂

@@RunSmarterwithBrodieSharpe At 60 years old Brodie, no question my biggest difficulty is taking rest days … for me a nice easy 10k is a rest day!! 😁😁 Oh and drinking enough water too, actually!!

Oh wow, good luck@@bev9708 for your 50k. I did my 1st in Feb Tarawera NZ. I do try with the weights but I'm very reserved and always build slowly in the gym but do do the exercises Brodie suggests. I am sceptical of calf raises though. If when we use 7x our body weight to run I'm doubtful any weight lifting will truly help because I can't do 352kg weight 😅 I think hill reps would be a better solution actually because that will be 7x our weight and up hill so more. Besides that I'm trying to get to squat and deadlift my weight at least. Not quite there yet. As for my 3h attempt I did do 3h8m in Melbourne in October @59 so I am trying to get 8min quicker. We'll see how I do or Brodie may just get a new client 😁

Great video. And agree with you wholeheartedly. Trouble is, I simply don't have the time in the week for anything remotely like the plan you suggest. I'll just be doing whatever time permits and try not let my ego get carried away and injure myself trying to catch-up with the program. Cheers.

Great info Brodie! Too many runners overlook the importance of strength and higher intensity training as they get older. Decline is NOT inevitable!

I feel like jump rope is an excellent plyometric exercise for the calves too, which I believe has definitely helped me, and I believe there is research to confirm this. I will definitely add the weights and try these calf raises. Can't wait to see the results in a few months. Trying for faster 5k times.

Good information Brodie! Hey which exercise do u think is better for distance and marathon running overall? Barbell deadlifts? Or barbell squats ? Is their a advantage over one of other for running performance?

Great question, I’d say they are equally important which probably isn’t the answer you were hoping for 😅 Squats will work on glutes, quads and back. Deadlifts will work glutes, hamstrings and back. Hamstrings work a lot harder with speed. So if you are running at race pace or speed efforts throughout the week, deadlifts are important.

thank you RunSmarter! yea another thing i notice is im less sore when doing 5 sets 5 with deadlifts vs 5 sets 5 squats im more sore and harder recover for weekly runs. U think i need do deadlifts sumo or conventional for my running? more so than squats? would 5 sets 5 deadlifts be ok? my marathon is 1 month out also i did 21 miler today easy pace.
