I agree -- old fashioned or not -- I like the idea of wearing a slip under a skirt or dress so as not to be self-conscious when out in the sun. Thanks for making this video. I wanted to make a slip for myself & this helps.

If the pieces are rectangles, is it truly necessary to sew two side seams rather than just cutting out the slip on the fold? I've always wondered about this. It would seem to cut out some of the bulk, and then the seam could be an indication of the back or left side seam. Thanks for any advice on this.
@Mellysews2 жыл бұрын
You can cut on the fold if your fabric is wide enough.

I’ve made a couple of half slips and also a couple pair of pant liners, all in flesh tone. One thing I noticed you doing but didn’t explain the benefit of doing is, when you were sewing on the elastic, you pulled at the back of the stitch to help the elastic taught. I love your videos and just saw you have one, “How to make a Travel wrap”. Gotta catch this, the one I made was not worth wearing, I finally cut it apart and reused the fabric- my lucky day!

Another good reason to wear a slip is that it helps the skirt stay put on windy days because it "sticks" to the slip.
@Mellysews6 жыл бұрын
That is another good point. Also since slips are often heavier/more fitted than the dresses/skirts worn over them, they tend to keep you covered even if your skirt does blow up!

Thank you so much for taking the time to make the tutorial. I usually buy full slips and cut them to the length i want to wear under dresses. I usually line my skirts. Just contemplating either lining a wrap skirt of a burnout fabric or making a half slip. While the skirt will not be see through at the front due to the overlap, the back is! I have both a light blue and white half slip (which haven't been worn for many years now- haha), but since this fabric is mostly dark brown and black, a black slip or lining it will have to be. Now that i have seen your video, it makes sense to sew up that slip - alot less work and it will be usable for other dark skirts. Also appreciate the suggested width -- Thank you.

@Mellysews6 жыл бұрын
Yup, just make it longer. And you may want to add side vents.
@oldtimerlee88206 жыл бұрын
Camisoles and half slips work well for replacements of traditional full slips. My sister says it's almost impossible to find a full slip around here. She doesn't sew (ironic isn't it :-) ) so I may try making her some of these half slips.
@jandimarco31136 жыл бұрын
I was curious why you cut a front and back piece and sewed sideseams, rather than just a single piece and stitching a centre back seam. I can see this gives you reference markers for the quarter point of the elastic, so is that why you you have two pieces rather than one? Or am I missing something? Thank you Melly.
@Mellysews6 жыл бұрын
It also means I can add side slits to longer length slips for ease of movement.
