@Mellysews7 жыл бұрын
Just make sure your old t-shirt has at least 30% stretch or you may need to size up. Some 100% cotton tees don't stretch that much.

This would be especially perfect for making underwear to match a knit skirt, if the skirt were short and/or a full circle, and prone to possibly flipping up in a breeze. In the original series of Star Trek they wore very short miniskirts, but since their underwear matched it didn't look indecent if you got a glimpse during a scene where maybe the girl was thrown around during a space battle or something.
@bridgetthewench5 жыл бұрын
The Star Trek minidresses were actually cleverly-cut rompers! There's a few scenes where Uhura is bending over something that makes it obvious, but you usually can't tell.

You are a saint! I struggled with these 3 sandwich pieces! Seam ripped and retired until fabric was ruined. Then I watched your amazing trick! Thank you,thank you, thank you! So thankful 🙏💓. Now the side seams. I believe should be sewed AFTER elastic applied. Just makes since. Flat construction much easier than stretching and sewing around a small curved leg hole. But everyone doing video's of side seams before elastic. Strange.

Doing the waist band was fairly easy. I followed the directions carefully, and it came out alright. HOWEVER, the leg holes were a nightmare. I checked some other sites and saw that they sewed the elastic along the leg holes before sewing up the side seams. Is there a reason for doing it one over another?
@Mellysews2 жыл бұрын
It's just personal preference; I don't like elastic in my side seams. Do whichever works best for you.
@debthompson44982 жыл бұрын
@@Mellysews I think they just do from the beginning of to end of the leg hole, and then they are connected when you sew the side seams; but there is no elastic on the sides. The flimsy material with the smaller elastic made it quite tricky as it would just keep shifting. I used a walking foot and ballpoint needle (and a paper towel underneath), and finally got them done and wore them today. Practice will make perfect....and I did learn alot. I made pajamas from your Jogging Pants Sewalong and they came out wonderfully. Thanks for your excellent videos.

Well, you have to use stretchy material to make these. The samples I show are all made from knit jersey. The bigger issue is you have to finish the edges somehow to keep them from rolling. You might find this video about types of knit fabrics helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2mVm6StZa9kjNk

Often I see cute patterns on remnants of fabric at the fabric store. But it seems like it’s never enough to make much of anything out of. This would be an excellent idea for some of those cute patterned knit fabrics. How much stretch is needed in the elastic (40%? 50%? Two way? Four way?)?
@Mellysews4 жыл бұрын
I've never actually measured the amount of stretch in the elastic I've used. The bands aren't that much smaller than the openings.
@merindymorgenson31844 жыл бұрын
Oh! Thank you so much for answering, and so quickly! I suppose if it seemed a little too tight you could always just make it slightly bigger? I’m super excited to make some of these! I have to make a couple tank tops and shorts out of the fabric I have on hand, for now, and then I can gleefully use my leftover on the girls’ underwear. My son has loads of undies, but the girl’s underwear elastic is so worn out that they have to keep hitting up their undies.

What do you think of the idea of using ribbing as if it were the elastic? Or a doubled band of self-fabric, the way you might do a tee shirt neck binding? I'm toying with the idea of sewing them on, trying to achieve the look of something approaching a yoga pants waist, with a little more coverage in the leg/crotch area.

oké, you just got me addicted to sewing my own panties😉. I just love it and your video and pattern are a great help. Just 1 question: how much of a percentage you take for the elastic?
@Mellysews Жыл бұрын
Elastic lengths for this pattern are listed in a chart in the front.

@melly sews Hello, I’ve been enjoying a couple of your videos. I am New to your channel and was wondering if the panty pattern is still available? I’m willing to buy it

Yes, it's still available. Go to the blog post linked in the video description for all the details.

The first stitch you show the need to pull the elastic to meet the fabric. For the second stitch (first method) do you need to pull/stretch the elastic and fabric together as you sew?
@Mellysews5 жыл бұрын
They're already sewn together by the second pass, so I'm not sure I understand your question.

Melly Sews, the first pass you slightly stretch the elastic as you sew it to the fabric. Once the elastic is attached and folded over, do you need to stretch it again as you sew for the second pass?
