A sleeve header is a more subtle look compared to adding a shoulder pad. Follow our tips for making and tacking your sleeve header before inserting to ensure the correct fit and how to affix the headers in place to achieve a neat finish. Using Butterick 6328 jacket pattern as an example, Jo shows you how you can create sleeve headers from boucle fabric.

Could you use this technique with a knit jacket?

Yes. You would get a softer feel but you could tack one in and see what it looks like before you sew it in for sure.

I am making an open lace/guipure over jacket or a bride and she particularly wants a raised sleeve head -it will need to be as transparent and as unnoticeable as possible. Can you suggest how to do this please-I have considered some gatherers tulle covered in skin tone lining but any other suggestions are most welcome. Or is there such a thing as very thin/transparent iron on stiffener or interfacing? I will have same problem of stabilising the lace seam at the Centre back where she wants a full row of covered small buttons on a rouleau buttonhole stripe. Tricky! Thanks so much.

You can use tulle. Make sure it is not too scratchy. You can use wide organza ribbon to make sleeve heads too. To stabilise the button edges organza ribbon works too. Hope it goes well. X
