Spinning is a lovely way to spend some time, and as a bonus, you get a product at the end. Also theres nothing more soothing than the sound of a spinning wheel. My wheels are both old, NZ made, one an antique(over 100) and the other is at least as old as me (60). Both of them have been owned by many people, and many hands have used them and i love that im just another step on their journey. I have them both on double drive because i like getting the tension set and then not having to faff around with it too much, plus im working on my finer spinning, and double drive is great for fine spinning.

Thank you! I am a beginner...just had my first lesson last week. I have a country craftsman wheel and it needed oiling but now seems to be working. I'm still getting used to the machine and today I spun 2 crochet strands together...a blue and a white, so I could see the twist...I'm hoping to start spinning wool soon. This was very helpful. ❤

from Gerry- You did a great job teaching. I've been spinning about 16 yrs. and started with a 1 treadle Ashford traditional. Then I found a one treadle Joy which I eventually bought a jumbo flyer for. Only recently have I moved to drop spindles. I still need practice, especially when plying. I have 2 rigid heddle looms too and I've written down your pick-up patterns. Thanks for all you do for the fiber community. God bless.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have wanted to learn how to spin for a minute now. I’ve been knitting for 25 years and in the last 2-3 I have become more and more interested in spinning but have been too nervous to venture into it. Your video is exactly what I needed to understand the process so now I know what I’m looking for in a wheel etc. Thank you again!

Just the video I needed. My first spin of a LOT of BFL was very uneven. I think I don't have enough control of spin and drawing it out at the same time. I couldn't bear to throw the yarn away, so I did not ply it and used it to make a garter stitch shawl. I love the shawl (autumn colors and rustic). Now I've bought a LOT of Corriedale and I want to spin it more evenly and knit a sweater. This video shows me that I need to slow way down for more control. Thanks.

Thank you for your video! I have watched a lot of videos and yours hit the nail on the head for me! Finally some things ‘clicked’ and I know what to do (try) to correct my spinning. I have been a crocheter since 1997 and I started learning spinning on an older single treadle castle style wheel (Fricke is the company that made my wheel but they are sadly no longer around). Crocheting is so relaxing but spinning is a whole new level of relaxing! I absolutely L🧶VE spinning and I can’t wait to find my sweet spot and relax and just enjoy spinning while getting a good even end result. Thanks again! Happy spinning!! 🧶

Great video…thank you😊 I’ve been spinning a few years but, as I’m in hospital atm, I thought I’d watch and see if there were any useful nuggets! It was lovely just reminiscing about learning to spin (i am KZbin taught!). I also use a plying bracelet for the left over singles, but I’ve never done that without breaking the yarn off and rejoining it 🤷🏼♀️ (now I’m wondering why I did that!). This was an enjoyable video to watch and your teaching and enthusiasm was spot on. When your plying bracelet popped off, I literally felt my heart lurch!😂 It was great how you showed what to do if that happens! Thank you for this😊🙏

Your explanation and demonstration of drafting is fantastic and very helpful. I've just picked up my first spinning wheel (a c.1983 Ashford Traditional). The control you have with the wheel movement using the double treadle is great, mine is single treadle and when the wheel stops (and even occasionally goes backwards!) I have to use one hand to get it moving again.

Thanks so much for making this really clear video. I have just started spinning. Getting the draw to be quite a challenge. One minute it’s taking the yarn in beautifully and then suddenly it stops doing so without any visible problem. Do you find that you need to expand the springs quite a bit on the brake band? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
@rehashfiber10 ай бұрын
I'm always adjusting the brake band. You'll get the feel of it, whether its yanking the yarn from you or not taking it quick enough..adjust, adjust, adjust. Keep going, it's so worth it. Happy Spinning. ~Shiree

Thank you, such a helpful video. I have been drop spindling for about a year and decided to upgrade, mostly so I can ply more easily and just bought my first wheel Ashford Kiwi 3. I have a question. Can i ply straight from my spindles, or should I wind onto a bobbin first? And if I do will it matter that I start plying from the beginning of my singles? Another question sorry! My wheel is hard to spin with the drive belt on (can spin fine without it) will it loosen over time? Thanks so much!
@rehashfiber10 ай бұрын
I ply directly from my drop spindles onto the Ashford Joy, and it's always been fine. Can you adjust tension on the drive belt? They do loosen over time, but it shouldn't be hard to spin because of it being new. I am not familiar with the Kiwi, maybe it would be helpful for you to ask the dealer you purchased it from. Best wishes. ~Shiree

Oh my, lol. Here's some ways you can get a feel for it and have fun and not worry about wasting good fiber. Get some pencil roving. There's no drafting involved you just learn to hold it, let twist in, and then feed to the bobbin. Another thing is get your hands on a bat of wool or old roving that no one wants, on sale, whatever, and do the same thing. Spin bad and get used to fiber twisting together. I do believe you've inspired me for this weeks show. I'm going to teach how to spin this stuff and how to get a feel for it. Stay tuned. Thanks for the inspiration and for watching. ~Shiree
