Awesome video. Beginner fly tiers, take heed of what these maestros have to say. Wish I had this information and options when I started tying many moons ago.

My first vice was my fingers, tied many flies with the ole pinchers, I was a kid no around me even heard of fly fishing, I was blessed to see some casters who introduced me to casting when I was around 10-11 at a sportsman show I was taken to but I had no flies to use so I started making my own with what ever materials I could find. My fingers hurt like hell but they did the job. I’m 49 now

Wow, you really wanted to tie flies. I did too, but wasn't quite that dedicated. My first fly outfit was a cheap casting rod and a Zebco 202. Didn't work so well. I upgraded as I could and taught myself with a little help from a couple of books. The internet wasn't even a dream back then.

Still using my adopted grandpa's Thompson model A from before I was born. It replaced the Vise-Grips mounted to a block of wood.

I got the model B because that was all I could afford at the time. Around $6 as I recall. I find that it still does what I need it to do. The very very expensive has mostly crowded out the moderately priced gear now in all areas of fly fishing. People seem to like that.

1989 purchased a Renzetti traveler , wow my first rotary vice . Converted jaws to cam from screw and added weighted base , nice . Still use it about every day . About 4 years ago got into big articulated streamers and big salt flies , purchased a Dyna King Excalibur . At first I did not like it , I did not like the jaw set up . Well it didn’t take to long to get the hang of the jaw set up and guess what it’s a great vice . I find it better for big flies when you really have to reef down and you are using epoxy and resins . Lots of working room on top no matter how big you go . But not an entry level vice . Still use the Renzetti for most everything else . Have also used the Regal traveler its a very good vice but once you get into and use a rotary vice you kind of stay with them . The vices they critiqued are all good , my advice would be get the best you can afford because once you get bit by the tying bug you will need all rest of your money for materials. It an endless enigma , but so much fun :-)

HMH Spartan is extremely well made, has easily exchanged jaws, and rotates. Made in the USA and very responsive customer service. They even have a cool tube fly add on. The Omni jaw hold a huge range of hooks out of the gate and has a death grip on hooks. I love mine.

They are great, but at over $250 they don’t really count as a budget vise.

My uncle bought HMH spartan a few years ago because his buddy who has it for years has recommended it to him. New spartan has a really stiff cam lever. And you can read about that on some forums.

PEAK MAFIAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!! Love my Peak, but for real they're all great vises. My two tying buddies love their Renzetties. As long as it holds a hook right?

I got a beginner tying kit about 3 years ago that had the extremely basic 15$ Steel vice. It has held up pretty well. I’ve tied hundreds of flies and the jaws are just now starting to fail. It still holds 10+ hooks but anything less they are fairly loose. Still a good deal to get started

Great job if you're happy with a fifteen dollar vice and you catch fish awesome. Great salesmen you two sell having fun not buying the best. It is nice to see people not just showing the most expensive tools.

Great video! #peakmafia I've done down to #26 and up to #8/0 with my Peak's standard jaws, though neither of those situations was ideal. I'm comfortable with the standards from #18-2/0.

You can get the midge jaws to make smaller flies fit in the vise. I have them and they work very well although you need to tune it perfectly. They cost about $40 on Amazon

Peak Mafia - LOL! I started on a Peak Rotary. It's a good vise. I just liked the Griffin Mongoose better, although I hybridized my Mongoose with the Peak pedestal and the Peak brass pedestal adapter. If my Mongoose ever breaks (not likely) maybe I'll take a look at some of the Cadillac vises. Nice video! Thanks!

I gave tying on a Apex vise for about 8 years. Holds every size hook that I tie. The jaws are in great shape. I have probably tie a 1000 flies on this vise.

I really like my Renzitti traveler. Only issue is I didn't like the light weight base that came with it. Switched out the base to a heavier one and voila, the perfect vise.

$150 for a fish hook vice is fucking ridiculous. that vice is nothing but two pieces of metal rod, a base, a brass bushing, a couple set screws, and the vice itself which I could probably make out of a machinists parallel clamp.

Dyna King. The F-C is 199.99. From that price point they get pricey but they are awesome for tying on large hooks.

I’m new into fly tying. The Renzetti isn’t out of my price range. However, I’ll be trying mostly flies for bass fishing and inshore/surf fishing. My question is is there a good quality vice that will accommodate a bass size hook, say up to a 7/0 ish?

One can never have too many vises. None-pro tip: Open the window & check for anyone below before throwing that trashy vise out the window. You break fewer windows that way.

I have tied on one for over 20 yr now. I tie from 14 to 4/0 for gill to bass to saltwater. I am sure it will tie smaller and bigger but that is all i need. Think i paid about $50. Holds hooks well for hairbugs and big streamers. I have no need for anothet vise for 20yr. There are a lot of good vises on the market. If traveling a pedestal may be needed. As there may not be a table that a clamp mount will fit.

U r incorrect sir, you said "$15 vises won't work"? Well, the Colorado Anglers Super Aa vise 103 is $15.99. This CHEAPLY priced vise is so friggen well made, and made in USA. 360°rotating head that reefs down sz. 2 to 26 hooks and holds them easily. The cast iron clamp is much better than aluminum.

you need to have the vice (or what you are describing) in a close up view while you describe it . The viewers can not determine all the feathers you talking about. I will stick with the one you don't recommend. I will modify mine to up grade it. Get a different camera person.
