Tonga, also known as Chitonga or Zambezi, was traditionally only spoken by the Tonga people of southern Zambia, northern Zimbabwe, and some parts of Mozambique. Most Tonga people are farmers, growing corn for subsistence and occasional commercial use. A Bantu language, Tonga is tonal and spoken by around 1.5 million people. Tonga did not have a written form until missionaries arrived in East Africa in the mid-nineteenth century and codified the language. Even today, the language is not standardized, and speakers of the same dialect may have different spellings for words in written form.
