I speak Farsi, Pashto, Urdu/Hindi, Spanish, Hebrew and Arabic. Today I looked up Thai and Vietnamese. The sounds are so different from what I'm used to! But all languages are beautiful just as all people are beautiful. Peace to all of you, my friends.

Nope. I vote for Korean is the hardest to pronounce. I'm learning it and in compared with Chinese and Spanish, which I find no difficulty in pronunciation, Korean sounds get on my nerve for always having the feeling of not being able to say it correctly.

Bluce Cloud lol, please tell me you're joking? try speaking to more Chinese people and you'll see that they will barely be able to understand you unless you speak almost with perfection in your tones. Korean doesn't have any tones so it's easy to distinguish each word. Also, if you speak Spanish, Korean shouldn't be hard to pronounce. Many polyglots agree that Vietnamese is hard to pronounce.

Naruto Uzumaki firstly, bcz I'm Vienamese, so I cant say that Vietnamese is difficult bcz I've said it for 25 years.lol. Let me tell u, I talk to my Chinese, Korean and Spanish friends and all my Chinese and Spanish friends have no problem with my speaking, even my Chinese friends keep complimenting on my pronunciation, she even suggests me to teach Chinese to one of her foreign friends, but when I talk to my Korean friends, he keeps laughing because of my pronunciation, though I'm trying to improve it so next time he cant laugh at me. Never have problems with chinese and Spanish since day 1 but Korean, sometimes, I want to throw my speaker away. Anyway, maybe bcz Vietnam and China are nearby and in many years long long long ago, China invaded V and controlled it, so the languages are kind of being connected.

bạn có biết: ia nờ = iên hăy IAn = IÊn ? Tương tự, ia ngờ = iêng, hăy IAng = IÊng, Tiếng Việt = TíaNG VịaT. .... kw = cw = qu (w=uơ, uờ là phần cuối của âm u. k + w = c + w = c + uờ = qu) .... Âm /to/ khi khéo dài hoặc nói thật chậm sẽ nghe thấy 2 âm: to, oooo . Uyên=wyên=wian (do yên hăy iên = ian). - ....

She actually speaks with a Northern accent, it's not wrong per se, but most people outside of Vietnam would recognize the Southern accent easier where R is pronounced more similar but not exactly the same as an English R or unfortunately sometimes, it's changed to a Y sound because of "lazy tongue." Both accents have their pros and cons when it comes to pronunciation. The reason why the Southern accent is more recognized is Communism in Vietnam originated in the North, so more Northerners stayed in Vietnam. Even if you were a Northerner that moved to a different country, there is unfortunately a negative connotation amongst ex-pats of Vietnam for the Northern accent because it's still associated with communism.

Really. Am I I the only Vietnamese who feel really weird with the phrase "nice to meet you" Vietnamese version?. I don't mean that it's wrong on language or grammatical term or any thing like that, but it just sounds really strange if I hear that in a conversion between Vietnamese people. I mean I've lived here in Vietnam since I was born 24 years ago, but I've never used this with any of my new Vietnamese friends. If I meet someone for the first time and I want to know him/her, the conversation will go like: first, with a smile (yes, to create good impression), then ask name, ask age (most of the time bcz Vietnamese need to know each other's age to be proper in addressing themselves), then ask other information depending on the setting, for example, if it is at a university, I often ask their hometown, their house location (like "do you live near here?" "Do you have to catch a bus to go to school/ or ride a mortorbike". Yess, that's how the REAL Vietnamese conversation often goes in real life. We dont say "Nice to meet you". The culture defines the language used in each country, so when "nice to meet you" is used in English when English-speaking people meet each other doesn't mean that it applies to every other languages. I myself learn other 4 languages so I hope that REAL and NATURAL native language can be brought into teaching process, not the kind of unnatural, sample conversation. When I learn a language, I want to talk the way native people talking to each other, not like a foreigner talking the language, maybe I've never been able to pronounce and sound exactly like a native but I want to be able use it the most closely to the way a native use it. That is the POINT here!

Because there are more tones in Vietnamese than thai. try find similar words like cat, lion, octopus etc. And then there are words even though have different meanings but the pronunciation is the same, an example is the word "mu" which is pig in thai but hat in vietnamese, they sound exactly the same, you can think of a pig in a hat so it gets easier to remember. If you start with this i think it's gonna be easier to learn.

Actually Vietnamese never use XIN CHÀO when greeting/ Even I, a native speaker, will feel a little bit funny when someone say XIN CHÀO to me. We mostly say Chào + an addressing pronoun, because pronoun in Vietnamese is very complicated and tricky to those to start learning Vietnamese. Most teachers will simplify the greeting way by using XIN CHÀO.
@VietnamesePod101
@VietnamesePod101 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Văn, You're right to say that "Xin chào" is not the common way Vietnamese people greet each other everyday. However, Vietnamese pronouns cannot be taught in just one or two lessons because it is by far one of the most complicated parts of Vietnamese language. And this is the very first lesson, so we only introduced the most general way to say "Hi", which is well understood by all Vietnamese people. If you continue watching our next lessons, you'll see how we teach each pair of pronouns one by one so that our learners can gradually know how to use them correctly. Anyway, thank you very much for your comment.

guys this is exactly the way they teach english in vietnam :) and I have never learnt to speak english smothly or a little bit freely. "Hi, I'm jonh I'm peter How are you? I'm fine, thank you, and you? I'm fine thanks." that' the way the teach me. and now after 8 years struggling to learn english, I am still fucking around to find a way to help me out on my english speaking that's fucking sad really By the way guys, if you want to learn a second language the first thing you do is to get a lot of listening of the language no matter you understand it or not just listen to the rythm and then you gotta learn to pronounce the alphabet slowly, freely and natively until you master it then try to make words, after that you gonna listen to daily conversation, i suggest vietnamese blog on youtube, you gotta build that insterest in vietnamese guys. hopefullly that helps

i think this video is ok for foreigner who want to SPEAK Vietnamese easily (i'm Vietnamese and from Southern Viet Nam). say about "standard pronunciation", most of Vienamese people know that what is correct pronunciation way, but because of their habit, their region or the way they like to pronounce, (i think) very few of them want to correct. Me, too (feel like a little strange and unnatural when i change the way i usually pronounce). So people, you don't have to be serious about that.

My boyfriend is vietnamese but doesn't speak very well vietnamese. And I also always forget if he's northern or southern vietnamese... So I don't really see a point to seriously learn vietnamese, but I find it interesting to hear and read it, especially since the language looks way different to from what you hear.

Though I feel the stuff taught here is great.. formal and informal, I can't get used to it cause to me it all sounds formal as heck :P If you ever get used to the language you'll know what I mean. Guys, there are like northern and southern vietnamese if yall didnt know. Southern I think is more "easy" because its from the country side i believe. In this video she is speaking Bac Ci (or something) which i assume is northern vietnamese.
@niyenni

The Southern accent is used in Saigon or Ho Chi Minh, not the countryside. Northern accent is used in Hanoi. From what I know, many people think Southern accent is harder to understand/learn than the Northern accent, but I don't know, I find the latter so hard to understand sometimes as someone who speaks the Southern dialect.

Three letter "a's". Six accents. 18 different ways to pronounce the letter "a"! As a Westerner, pronunciation has been the biggest challenge for me. But words, including verbs, do not change form or spelling. And most words are short (but accents add to what you have to remember.) For me, understanding the "big picture" has helped me in learning Vietnamese.
7 жыл бұрын
phapnui first at all, it's not called accent and there are 20 different accent in Vietnam. Second in English it's called tone but it is not like the tone in music. It's been used or exists in every language in the world but not as common as Vietnamese. It's like how English pronounce the words "of" and "urf". Some tones in Vietnamese is also being pronounces in several different ways in different dialect or accent so I can say Vietnamese can have more than 6 tones.
7 жыл бұрын
phapnui in other language you only need to make the word longer, adding a new word , replace the word, swapping the word to change it meaning, but in Vietnamese we don't do that often. In Vietnamese 65% of the language are monosyllable which means one word one meaning, longest word in Vietnamese is only have three syllables. Vietnamese is a language that rich of vocabulary, it's having 82 phonemes which is 52 vowels, 24 consonants and 6 tones. Combines all the syllables it's can make up to 38.000 sounds, so learning Vietnamese is different cause you need to remember all the sound, all pronunciation and some of them will sound similar to an western ears. Other hand Vietnamese have the most easiest grammar for any English speakers. The grammar is simple and similar to English, there are no verb conjugations, no gender and other things, the tense is easy to learn and it will only take you 2 hours to learn it.

Kreddevil9 I think aside from pronunciation Vietnamese is super easy. Super easy grammar, logical phonetic writing system, easy vocabulary but sometimes doesnt flow ưell because a few words are used to make up a bigger word. example bất lịch sự=no polite=rude. My first language is Vietnamese and I find this incorrect I'm from Southern VietNam, there's no way I pronounce the word "Rat" like that! Moreover, I rarely say "Xin Chao" to greet because it sounds so riddiculous. I use "Chao ban (you/ friend)/ anh (you / brother), chi (you / sister)..." and so on. If you want to teach VNese, at first you have to know what the "standard pronunciation" is.

Vietnamese has final consonants: /m/, /n/, /ŋ/, /p/, /t/, /k/, /w/, /j/. Stop consonants /p/, /t/, /k/ are no audible release and all voiceless, it's not like nothing after vowels. Like your mouth pronounce that consonants but not release sound. :) Ex: bạ "any" and bạt "canvas"

Vietnamese has to be the most difficult language for a European person to learn, because the sounds are so different. It's odd to see the latin characters in an Asian language, but not really very helpful since all the diacritics change the sound so much. It'd be helpful to have a phonetic English spelling as well as the basic sentence, like in Japanese there's the Hiragana: こんにちは, then the English phonetic: 'Konnichi wa', then the translation.
@tSp289

ebolamunkee I'm sure. I'm also sure that it'd make it more difficult to actualyl learn soem words as no doubt their pronunciation varies from sentence to sentence so phonetic spelling would mae them look like a different word, but still, Vietnamese sounds very alien to European ears and the standard written form is not helpful.

+HomasterX What qualities would you consider good in a wife, and why do you believe that Vietnamese women have these qualities?
