@shirokumakumo:the phrase "cháu xin" is the typical phrase of the nothern people , cháu means I in english, usually talk about the kid, or someone is younger than the listener (not using with your parents, brother or sister.. ), xin means acceptance, cháu xin means you accept something from someone, i e your uncle wanna give you a gift and then you can answer them. Dạ cám ơn, cháu xin ạ. Dạ and ạ give your sentence more politely.

@Ken Vin: Thank you for your explanation. Let me make it a bit more accurate. "Cháu" is a pronoun to use when you talk with your grandparents, your uncle or your aunt and it is also used for anyone around these people's age. If you receive anything (not necessarily a gift) from any of these people, get it with both hands and say "Cháu xin" to show your respect to them. Shirokumakumo wrote "chau xin" without tone marks, so I would first like to make sure in what situations he/she heard this phrase to give an exact explanation.

I think every lesson should be tought by both Southern and Northen teachers bc their pronounciation is different. In this situation, her pronounciation would be "cạm ơn", not "cảm ơn".

+mentisdominus Hi Mentisdominus, The two spellings (in order) are : "cám ơn" and "cảm ơn". Most people will find it's difficult to hear the difference at the beginning but when you practice more and focus on the tones, you will get it. Best, Team VietnamesePod101

Cám ơn is the southern dialect and by far, easier to pronounce. This lady is teaching northern dialect only. But I guess you should learn at least the basic. For Vietnamese that live in the USA we speak more of the southern dialect. Good Luck. I am from Vietnam by the way
