I've so often tried to pick up guitar over the years try to learn a tab for one song and gave it up. Your videos are inspiring to actually learn the instrument and not songs. Thank you!

Another great lesson! Really enjoying these and all the Tool song tutorials...covers like 95% of my KZbin searching for guitar info on top of my formal instruction.

This is one of the coolest ideas for practicing triads that I’ve come across. And I definitely have not given my triad studies the proper time in application. I understand them but applying them isn’t something I work with. This idea makes them much more approachable I think. Very cool man. Thank you and great job as always.

Been working hard to learn all 12 major triad shapes and the intervals. Starting to click... pretty awesome how changing 1 note gives you access to all the other sounds. For example I was able to quickly play all of the minor triads since I knew the 3rd interval in all of the major shapes and just needed to flat it... cool stuff. Great video and teaching. Could you do a lesson on using Triads as the basis for improv / lead / riffs?

Fun coincidence you posted this lesson today. I just did a recording where I did full chord strums on one side with an acoustic and played mostly traids on the other side with a clean electric for a nice backing. I was thinking about your video on creating different parts for a song where one tip was voicing chords differently in different parts.

im kinda confused, u say ur outlining the chord but when u play the triad on the final stringset u play a fret not in the chord? for example when u played the g triads at 2:38 the last triad u play is 557, where does the 7 come from?

I think the confusing part of this is the fact that I thought I was understanding, and then this video turned it on it’s head. I thought that chords were strings that played their notes two notes up from each other simultaneously, while triads were those notes played individually. But, you’re playing frets that are right beside each other? man, I don’t think I’m ever gonna understand this. I’ve been looking all over KZbin and every video confuses the shit out of me. And now you’re saying that you can stack them vertically? man, I have no idea.

Chords are not strings. A chord is two or more notes played together. Triads are 3 note chords. On guitar, we can play them as chords (together) across three strings or horizontally across a single string (like a horn player, who can only play one note at a time). When EVH taps, he's outlining triads (chords) on a single string. Most common chords on the guitar can be broken up into smaller chords. A Bar chord for example and in this video is or can be all six strings. There is doubling of notes when you play them and can be reduced to just a triad (three strings).

Axe of Creation I understand a bit about what you were saying there. But then again, I haven’t picked a guitar and started playing yet. I just got a tele with humbuckers the other day because I wanted to be able to learn by covering songs and learning to play tool from you. But these scales, notes and triads have been giving me grief.
