You are an awesome English teacher and thank you for your time in teaching me everything. How to write a hook lecture?
@LearnAcademicEnglish Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your nice comment. For a lecture or presentation, a good hook is usually a question that the audience can answer by raising their hands. For example, "How many of you have heard of this...?" (and show a picture). Then you can quickly see how many people nod or raise their hands and say something like "I see that most of you have never heard of this. Well, in today's presentation, I will..." Another good hook is an interesting story, but the story should have some connection to the topic.
@AngeLukeba-o2n Жыл бұрын
Hello teacher! my question is how dors the hook differ from a topic sentence ? Can a hook be connected to a topic sentence ?
@LearnAcademicEnglish Жыл бұрын
Hello! A hook is different from a topic sentence because a hook goes itn the introduction of an essay or presentation. A topic sentence goes (usually) at the beginning of a body paragraph, which comes later in the essay. The topic sentence tells the main idea of that particular paragraph; however, the hook is just to catch the reader's attention at the beginning of an essay. I have a video about topic sentences--you can find it in my Writing Playlist.

So I have been struggling with my topic The most memorable day of my life .I don’t know how to start it off?I also don’t know how to write my thesis statement so that it will flow with my topic?
@LearnAcademicEnglish9 ай бұрын
Good question. A hook for a narrative essay is a little bit harder because the topic is so personal. If you’re really stuck, I would just use a question like “if you could relive only one day in your life, what would it be?” For the thesis statement, Try to think about what your overall message is. Was it a great day or a bad day? Then you can write something like “that was an amazing day that I will never forget. Or that was a day filled with so many important lessons. Just be sure that the idea that you state in your thesis statement matches the overall message of your essay.
@alebrasmith-cooper52509 ай бұрын
@@LearnAcademicEnglish The topic is “The most memorable day of my life”.I was going to write about the day I decided to go into recovery or something around recovery.I picked that because it’s closest to my heart.But,now I’m trying to figure out what should be my thesis statement?I’m trying to get my high school diploma,I just started watching your videos and they are very helpful but I’m just a little lost.
@LearnAcademicEnglish9 ай бұрын
Don't worry, you can do it! :) Start with a 5-10 minute brainstorming. What ideas can you talk about in your essay? Write down every big and little idea. After that, look at the ideas and think about how you can organize them into paragraphs. Will you tell your story in chronological order? If so, how can you separate them into paragraphs? (For example, one paragraph about before recovery, etc.) Or will you talk about reasons WHY that day was so special to you? Make a short outline so you have it all planned out so you don't get lost. Then make your thesis statement that shows the overall idea of your essay. Something like: The day I went into recovery was scary but ended up being the best day of my life. Or The day I went into recovery changed my life forever. Good luck! Hi mam! All the way from Cameroon. I thought a metaphor didn't take as or like as comparative words. We had an example of a metaphor using "like" If that's the case, how different is it from a simile? Thanks😊
@LearnAcademicEnglish3 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you for your question! You are correct that when we use "as" or "like," it is a simile. I was taught that a simile is a type of metaphor, so I used "metaphor" to refer to any type of comparison, including a simile. I hope that makes sense. :) Anyway, you can use any metaphor at the beginning of your introduction to make a hook, for example, "My life has been a rollercoaster."

@LearnAcademicEnglish4 жыл бұрын
Can you click CC to turn on the subtitles? Those will help you if I speak too fast. : ) Yes, you are correct that a hook is the opening of an essay. I teach a lot of people who study for the TOEFL or go to college in the U.S., so I talk about essay writing in some of my videos. A metaphor is when you compare something to something else, and it's usually an object that symbolizes something. For example, if you say that your friend is a snake because he is sneaky, that's a metaphor. Life is like a box of chocolates because you never know what you're going to get. My life is a rollercoaster because there are so many ups and downs.
@LearnAcademicEnglish4 жыл бұрын

@LearnAcademicEnglish4 жыл бұрын
@@nicknameunknown4911 Good point! If you are listening to something that is the right level for you, you should challenge yourself to listen without subtitles. However, if it's too difficult, subtitles will help you catch words that you cannot understand. Also, subtitles will help you understand the connection between the sound of the word and spelling. It's your decision, but I recommend using them sometimes, especially when the listening is hard.

I would probably tell a hypothetical story. For example, imagine your daily life in the year 2047 and describe a bit about it. Maybe add something interesting that will happen to show contrast with life nowadays, like that you get in a self-driving electric car instead of an old gas guzzler. Or start wtih a quote about the future. Good luck! :)

I like your style and would love to use this hook video, but you mixed up a metaphor with a simile. A simile compares two unlike nouns using like, for or as. A metaphor does not use those words. Perhaps a quick edit?

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, once a video is published on KZbin, it cannot be edited (except for taking parts out). I already added a note in the description of the video. Technically, a simile is a type of metaphor, but I understand that the way that I explained it would be confusing because I gave similes as examples, and I misspoke in the video.

As an English teacher, myself I'd like to suggest editing this video (even though it is from 3 years ago) and correcting how you define metaphor. What you are describing is a SIMILE not a Metaphor. People using this video to learn will be mistaken in how to understand the differences between the two.
@LearnAcademicEnglish2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment! I have already addressed this in the description of the video and in some of the comments because you are not the first one to point this out. Unfortunately, KZbin does not allow me to edit the video once it's uploaded (except to remove parts of it). However, the way that I understand metaphor and simile is that a simile is a type of metaphor, and therefore I was just using a simile as an example of the metaphor type of hook. I have since researched this to confirm my understanding and have found that other sources say the same. I hope it is not confusing to people using this video to learn.

Thanks for the feedback, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I think that I addressed that in the description of the video; I should have said "simile" since the examples I gave were all similes. However, I believe that all similes are actually a type of metaphor, and when I teach this in my classes, I ask students to try using a metaphor in their hook, and I include a simile as one type of metaphor.

I'm not good in English but for me as long as you had a correct grammar in any form, hook is not a necessity.

It depends on what you are writing. If you are writing an essay for an English class high school or university, a hook is usually expected.

Yes, I know that I didn't call it a simile in the video. However, a simile is a type of metaphor, and the simile was just an example.

Immigration is a trip between galaxies. Is this a good hook?

I love it! But you need to add more to make it clear--why is it like a trip between galaxies?

AI Overview Learn more … "Life is like a box of chocolates" is a simile because it uses the word "like" to compare life to a box of chocolates, which is the defining characteristic of a simile. Explanation: Simile: A comparison using "like" or "as". Metaphor: A direct comparison without using "like" or "as"." (Source above- AI Overview- Google Search)

I already addressed this several times in the description of the video and in other comments. A simile is a type of metaphor, but if you want to think of them the way that your AI overview described, that's fine too. No big deal!
