I will practice the assignment. I am sure I will catch on. I regret that I did not encourage my friends to only speak Twi with me so that I could learn through immersion. I will contact you later concerning purchasing another learnakan.com item but I will discuss it at another time. I am still going through the audios. Do the rules for singular possessive adjectives and plural possessive adjectives (i.e., drop the vowel and add an apostrophe, keep the vowel in full for plural possessive adjectives, etc) apply to only possessive adjectives? Or, does it also apply to other aspects of grammar in Twi?
@learnakan6 жыл бұрын
Hi Akos 😊 Yes, the apostrophe is used to mark possessiveness in Twi. I'm guessing you're asking this because you may have seen the apostrophe used at the same position with verbs in the perfect aspect. For instance "m'asesa (I have changed)", "w'anoa (he/she has cooked)", etc. I've personally seen quite a number of those spellings around. Please note that a verb, together with the aspect marker 'a', must be written together with the pronoun without any apostrophe. There will be a lesson on this soon. 😊
@Akosua.flower6 жыл бұрын
@@learnakan Hi Yaw :] And yes, that is exactly similar to what I was referring too. Twi is more complexed than I thought. But I am trying to force myself to learn so if I find my father one day I can talk to him. But, I look forward to seeing that lesson and more assignments!
@Akosua.flower6 жыл бұрын
@@learnakan "w'anoa (he/she has cooked)" that is not "You have cooked"? I thought he/she is like n'anoa?
@learnakan6 жыл бұрын
No, first off, "w'anoa" for "he/she has cooked" is wrong. I only cited those as wrong spellings, saying there shouldn't be any apostrophe in a pronoun + perfect marker + verb string. So it should be written correctly as "wanoa (he/she has cooked)", "wasesa (he/she has changed)", etc. Now, to your question, no, if you write "nanoa" you'd be using the possessive adjective with a verb. Remember the "ne/n'" was said to be the possessive adjective. And you cannot "own" a verb, can you? 😀 Take it one at a time. We haven't gotten to why the "w" that starts "wanoa" is "he/she". We will get there but, for now, you shouldn't overwhelm yourself with that. All will make sense later. You're doing great so far 😊
@learnakan6 жыл бұрын
Oh, and, just to give you the difference, "you have cooked" is "woanoa", while "he/she has cooked" is "wanoa"

Thank you so much Yaw (I'm Yaa btw). I've started watching your vids and I think I might actually be able to speak it this year. Only thing I would suggest is not to spend too much time explaining English grammar rules at the beginning as I'm sure most twi learners are native English speakers. Great job though!

Hello these videos are great, one the the apostrophe, the way you explained/ write using the apostrophe in a different video, is confusing/ the way you say it , and write, ad teach how it should be used in a word is different, not trying to be picky, But as American learning Twi, I want to make sure I am saying the right thing.
@learnakan5 жыл бұрын
That's okay Colin. We all make mistakes and you'll be helping me and everyone else when you point such mistakes out. Could you please let me know the specific way I used the apostrophe elsewhere and how it's different in another so I correct same next time? Thank you
@wukuada80085 жыл бұрын
i am asking, does it go there, Ani for example changes to m'ani for my eyes, but from reading I thought it was pronounced m----ani, but you say it ma---ni, I am not saying you are wrong, I am most likely wrong! just asking from the way it sounds does the apostrophe come before or after the a
@learnakan5 жыл бұрын
Oh okay, I thought you meant I used the apostrophe in a different way in another video, which would have been mistake then. Yes, the apostrophe comes before the 'a'. What the apostrophe is doing there is just contracting the vowel of the pronoun 'me'. So we introduce the apostrophe to occupy the spot of the 'e' in 'me'. As for the pronunciation, I'm unable to tell how you suppose 'm---ani' and 'ma---ni' sound by just looking at the text. I could help with that if I heard you say the two. Nonetheless, the pronunciation of same in the video is right so you can go with it. Thank you 😊

What is the Twi rule when a name or title acts as a possessive adjective? In English we usually add 's, such as "John's car" or "teacher's pet." How does that work in Twi?
@learnakan5 жыл бұрын
Very simple in Twi: Just put the name of the possessor before the possessed. That's it. E.g. John kaa (John's car), ɔkyerɛkyerɛni ayɛmmoa (teacher's pet), etc.
