A lot of people out there wish they could see better when attacking in beach volleyball, and that they could get to the ball better to improve their spike and consistency.
What if most people are searching for these skills in the wrong place, and maybe even better, you can have them both with one fix?
Since this is both a standalone video as well as part 1 of a spiking video series, here are the other parts:

Absolutely right! I asked Taylor Crabb why I couldn’t block him when I played with him, and he said it’s because he hits it before his apex and at his apex. He told me he goes early!

Hmm, really interesting. I've heard to wait to hit as popular vball advice, but also had someone tell me I was going too late before and they were right. I've gotten away from going early thinking I needed to wait longer. I'll try going earlier while still waiting for the set.

You might cover this in the follow up videos, but one of the reasons why I try to hit it on my way up is it naturally adds a topspin.
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast

Good point, I agree that it naturally adds topspin! For me, it is not necessarily the main reason for hitting on the way up, but more like a very nice bonus! Usually when you do things in the (really) right ways, benefits come bundled together in amazing packages! :)

Excellent point. Hitting the ball on the way up definitely makes top spinning easier.

This is exactly what my coach told me is my problem as this lead to reading the ball wrong -> body being tilted trying to fix the ball -> lower hit point for ball and weaker swing. Great video!

This is the second time I watch this and it makes perfect sense theoreticly but I think I'm too slow to successfully inpliment it correctly. I'll try to focus extra much on this during my training tomorrow and see if I can notice any difference!

Great tips! I definitely see most pro players having quite quick armswings and no super long indoor-style plant steps! Now, does this mean I should try to adjust to mostly working with a lower set as well, because it helps vision in the same way that you described?
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I realized I should do an addon video to this where I argue for the opposite, because even though I think it's better to hit quickly (still possible to hit hard), there are pros out there hitting on the way down and being successful, so it's not black and white.. However, those pros tend to be quite a bit taller than average. But to your question: As you say, a lower set makes it easier to see the court. In windy conditions it also makes the ball less likely to move a lot (so easier to get to the ball). So if you have a partner who can set you consistent low sets I definately think there's a point learning to handle them. But I also think you should be able to "be quick" also on higher sets, you should be able to handle all heights of sets without hitting on the way down I guess..! One of the most important point here and oftrn missed by people according to me is to have a setter who is consistent with the SET HEIGHT no matter what the set height is, just so it stays roughly the same all the time. Once you know the setters setting tempo and can time it right, it becomes possible for you to adapt to sets that are inside/outside/tight/off net/whatever, but if the tempo is different for every set, at least I think that becomes very chaotic very quickly and you can't find any trust in your partners sets, no matter if they happen to land in the right spot or not. You need to be able to be calm in your body and find the right tempo in your approach to be able to hit, and for that a consistent set height in a way is more important than a consistent location. Does all this rambling make any sense? I should make a video about this haha.

I think this logic also lines up with lower sets. Lower sets take more time to go down, giving you more time to see the court.
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 3 жыл бұрын
True! The speed of the ball moving downwards will be slower on a lower set. Then there is a bit of a tradeoff which is that you have less time to react if the setter sets somewhere you are not expecting the set to end up.. In windless conditions if I have a setter who I cannot really "trust" or "read" where he/she will set, then I'd rather have a higher set and just adjust to the set myself.. But it is so nice to hit lower sets if you and your partner are synced with the setting! :) Actually where I am from there has sort of been an uncosncious "set high standard" where just everyones baseline was to set high and everyone learned to time those. Then new generation ofplayers gets lulled into that also without realizing there could be a different way to play. Glad I've spent some time in asia though because there the standard solution is definitely a lower set and a quicker timing, which at least in strong wind is much better. I'd encourage people to experiment also with setting tempos that they are not used to, lots to learn there with different timing steps etc..!
@tonybowen455

Interesting. Going earlier, you also have the option to wait just a split second longer to change your shot up as well. Waiting as long as possible like nygard, you gather a ton of info before you get to choose a shot that's hard to read.
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm! Do you mean that if you go a bit earlier, you have the option to purposefully hit a bit late (on your way down in the jump) which can trick blockers and defenders? It's a good point I think. Reid Priddy talked about this strategy in his book. I need to experiment more with it one day..! :)

@@peter-kriska ahh yeah, this is one reason learning these things is quite tricky, there is a lot of things we have to change, but we can pretty much only hold one thing in our mind at one point in time? hahah, at least soon we'll hit 1000 subscribers and i'll finally create that first course about learning, i've been wanting to get that information out for so long but havent felt like i could justify it (felt like i should continue making youtube videos to make the channel grow instead), but soon! :)

@@peter-kriska But one way to do it is to have patience and train things one at a time, then over time you will be able to combine them! To really have a longterm plan and follow it rather than thinking things will work out immediately.. Sometimes there might be ways to combine things quicker, but thats a bit of a longer theory haha so I'll save that for the course! 😅

Nice video.thanks🤙🏽 But How do i get faster with my arm swing?? 🤔
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 5 жыл бұрын
I'll talk about that in the videos I'll make as a continuation on this one! :) But short answer that might or might not help out of context like this, is: left arm should not move upwards after the point in time when your feet leave the ground.. If you have something resembling a good armswing today, that will kind of force the hit to be quick relative to the jump. Hehe but this is a complex thing, for some people that's all they need, for others there are a lot of other things that need to be fixed as well for this to work..! :)
