Hey, I just wanted to say thank you very much. I took Chinese at my previous school last year, but after moving I was stuck with a school that didn't offer it as an option. I loved Chinese so much though, that I decided to continue learning it on my on as best as possible. Sometimes I get really depressed because I feel like I'm going nowhere, and it flat out sucks not having a teacher, but I always feel a lot better after watching your videos. They keep me determined to keep pushing. 谢谢!

One of the very first words that was taught to my partner was 悲哀 and it really made an impact on him, because the mandarin teaching programme on the PC voiced it in a really hilarious and dramatic way. It's been a running joke with us ever since.

幸福 is used when you are happy with your marriage. If you are happy with your marriage, u will say 我很幸福。 開心 means happy and 難過 means sad.

No one says 我是一點高興. In this case, 高興 is used as a noun, like in Spanish, when you say "I'm hungry", you say "Tengo hambre", which literally translates to "I have hunger".

Hi Ben, As far as I know, the qi dai for umbilical cord is qi2 dai4, and not qi1 dai4. That's why one should always practice correct tones to avoid misleading.

@crystalpeng4485

Allen Yun - the first sentence was kind of weird. No one say in that way. Maybe you can say "我是高興的" but when you want to add "一點" you have to use "有",like your second sentence - 我有一點高興

what exactly is 幸福? (as in when does one use it?) also some one asked this before me but in what context would you use 開心 and 難過? is it different degrees of happy and sad or synonyms? also what is the emotion when you are just feeling sort of indifferent? like the emotion Ben had towards Karen getting JB tickets or when Seth heard about the royal baby.

I think the difference is very small, maybe if you talk about emotional states you can use both 傷心 and 難過, but if you talk about things and events, say, somebody tells you he lost his wallet and you want to show that you care you might say "Oh, that's so sad!". Then you'll say "噢,很難過!", not 傷心... Not sure :)

A quick question open to anyone that can answer.... So Ben says wo hen both in third tone right? But I have learned that if you have two third tones together like this, or ni hao and such, the first word takes on the second tone, so it's more like wó hen. Like we use a and an. Is this right?

It's xing1 fen4. Xing has two pronunciations depending on the meaning: xing 4, mostly when it means "feelings" (Gao1 xing4 happy), and Xing 1, mostly when it means "rising", or something is being built, (xing1 jian4 to build) .
