How to JOKE in DUTCH? ... This way, it's funnier than the joke itself!

Dutch language students play broken telephone (Chinese whispers)
They need to pass on a joke in Dutch!
Watch till the end, because the result is hilarious!
These videos were recorded with Dutch language students at the BLC Dutch Winter School.
Mistakes marked in the video:
We've chosen to mark small translation/grammar mistakes in red for educational purposes.
We haven't marked the mistakes/misunderstandings that are clear from the story.
We have deliberately chosen a very light red font, so as not to put too much stress on the mistakes,
because when you learn a language, you shouldn't be afraid to make mistakes!
Mistakes that were repeated many times:
- 'de' meisje - should be: 'het' meisje
- ze vraagt 'als' - should be: ze vraagt 'of'
Other mistakes/misunderstandings:
- 1:42 'blindedarm' is pronounced as 'blindarm', so the next couple understands 'spleen' (in Dutch 'milt')
- 1:58 'grote' (big) is misunderstood for 2:37 'gouden' (golden)
- 2:01 'Die' refers to 'het gebouw', because of 'het', you can't use 'die'. Correct: 'Dat gebouw!'
- 3:33 correct word order: '... of hij ziet dat ze een operatie had (gehad)'
- 3:34 'ze hebt' should be 'ze heeft', 'spleen' (see above), better: 'ze heeft/had haar blindedarm laten opereren'.
- 3:40, 5:05 'deze gebouw' should be 'dit gebouw' (because 'het' gebouw)
- 4:09 'de' grapje - should be 'het' grapje
- 4:32 'heb' should be: 'heeft'
- 5:07 'dak' (roof) became: 'doek' (cloth)
- 5:37 'voor een gebouw' became: 'vorige bouw' (sounds the same); 'bouw' is construction, but can also refer to the body
- 5:58 'was' should be: 'waren'
- 6:00 'waren in', better: 'hadden' (even though Anglicism), or just 'het was romantisch'.
- 6:36 'nieuwe' should be 'nieuw' (het-word after 'een')

Ohhhhhh ik heb daar een horrorverhaal over. Ik was iemand die graag enthousiast meedeed in de klas, dus de lerares vroeg me (met 17 jaar oud) of ik dit zelfde geintje in m'n eentje wilde doen, voor de klas. Zij gaf eenmalig, fluisteren in mijn oor (mondeling dus) een lang verhaal door dat met Narcotica, verdovende middelen en de legale én illegale verkoop ervan, te maken had. Ik noemde het 'drugs' in mijn doorgeef-verhaal wat ze gelijk een heel erg slechte stap vond, want slaappillen zijn geen drugs en weetikhet. Zo liet ze aan de hand van mijn uitleg zien, hoe het mis kon gaan. Ik stond erbij, het domme voorbeeld te zijn. Erna kreeg ik een microfoon die op boxen in de klas aangesloten stond en werd ik op de gang gezet. Waar ik mondeling de hele klas door een 'Van A3 naar A4, terug naar B6, streep diagonaal richting G5'-tekening moest loodsen. Van een huis, een kerk en drie bomen. Ik deed het zo duidelijk en traag mogelijk, (maar ik heb ADHD en mijn overzicht is mijn slechtste punt) en ik weet nog dat ik geroep en gescheld uit de klas hoorde over dat er niets klopte van hun tekening. En dat ik toch rustig doorging, de microfoon terugbracht en dat bij binnenkomst de hele klas woedend op me was dat ik zo'n slechte uitleg-ger was en dat hun tekening niet gelukt was, omdat het aan hen niet gelegen had. De lerares probeerde nog te zeggen; 'Het punt is dus dat het allemaal heel moeilijk is, jongens!' maar ik kreeg nog dagenlang te horen dat je aan mij niets moest vragen, want ik kon mensen niet eens een simpele tekening uitleggen. *trieste vioolmuziek speelt op de achtergrond* Het leuke is wel dat ik nu Pedagogisch Werker ben, da's overzicht houden over 45 kinderen van rond de 5 jaar oud. Ben er tot op de dag van vandaag nog nooit eentje kwijtgeraakt en geen van allen durft iets over mijn leiderschap te zeggen (ze kunnen 'leiderschap' überhaupt al niet uitspreken dus dat scheelt) en mijn tekeningen worden gewaardeerd en wie er een grote mond geeft zet ík op de gang. Muhahahaha. Muhahahaha. MUHAHAHA. (Even serieus, ik ben een hele goede begeleidster hoor, ik pest geen kinderen, dawas een grapje.)

Als je aan je blindedarm wordt geopereerd, heb je een litteken, dat onder je slipje zit. Dus als het meisje zegt, dat ze de jongen wil laten zien waar ze aan haar blindedarm geopereerd is, denkt hij: "Nu wordt het spannend," en hoopt hij ook haar schaamstreek te zien. Maar in plaats daarvan wijst het meisje niet op de plaats op haar lichaam, waar de operatie heeft plaatsgevonden, maar op het ziekenhuis (het grote gebouw met de ramen), waar ze geopereerd is. De grap zit er dus in, dat de jongen haar 'laten zien waar ze geopereerd is' uitlegt als intiem worden, waar zij gewoon zakelijk terugdenkt aan wat haar is overkomen.

This "telephone circle" game is what we used to do in primary school. It was obviously for fun aswell, but my teacher back then used it as an example of how gossip starts and how you should never believe a story that has been shared by a number of people - best go to the source if you want to know things and certainly if you need to talk out things. Funny though how this went from a really 'flauw' operation joke to a transgender story😁.

The broken line is used as early as kindergarten. The teacher sits in a circle with the kids, whispers a word or sentence in the ear of the kid next to him or her, and the kid passes it on to the next one, at the end, we see how distorted it became along the way. It teaches for example that a true story, trough gossip change more and more over time, when its passed on trough a lot of people 08:58 the reaction of the woman from the koppel who started is priceless, she is lhao 😆
