Learner Driver or Provisional Insurance

hey there, what if I bought myself a second hand car to learn in. What kind of insurance do I need for this set up?

I have bought a car and just got temporary provisional insurance on MY car. Does anybody else need to be added to this insurance? Just to clarify I am the only one insured on this car and as a provisional license holder.

It's worth checking with your insurer, but if you have provisional insurance on your own car in your own name then as long as you have an accompanying drivers who meets the legal requirements, that should be fine.

If you want to learn with your parents in between driving lessons then you can get temporary cover, but that has to be in a car that is already insured (like the family car). I noticed I can only take insurance that covers for a year selecting Provisional Licence (UK Only) What would happen to the insurance if I pass the driving test in 2 weeks? @@sjv2493 Sorry for the slow response - hope your test went well! You can get policies that convert from provisional to full licence holder when you pass your test. It may be too late for this advice now, but we'd suggest searching for provisional licence insurance with fully comprehensive cover and then checking with the provider before you buy it that it will convert to full insurance when you pass - and, importantly, whether that incurs an additional charge.

Probably a bit late for it to be useful for you but for anyone who sees this in the future. You cannot drive on your own with a provisional license ever, under any circumstances. Not only will your insurance not cover you, it is literally illegal.

You can check our some of our first car reviews at - www.firstcar.co.uk/reviews - you should be aiming for something like a Corsa, Clio, Ibiza, Polo, Fiesta etc with a low insurance group. We'd suggest looking at the smaller engine sizes and also consider a black box (telematics) insurance policy - they can be a lot cheaper.

When I get my provisional license can I drive with like my dad who has been driving for over 30 years in the uk. The car we have is already insured and is a 2.0 litre engine and I’m at the age of 16 and the car is Audi A4 2009

Hi Sahil, your dad will need to either have specific insurance to cover you driving his car or add you as a named driver on his policy (which is likely to increase his insurance costs signficantly).
