This After Effects tutorial will teach you how to make perfect big circles and animate them with help of Radial Wipe effect. There are at least 20 ways to do it, you could use just a stroke, the trim paths option or other things but this approach has it's advantages because the Radial Wipe effect is very easy to use and the keyframes can be changed afterwards.

You can add the property trim paths and using the start and end sliders make the same effect but easier. You can add trim paths by clicking on the shape and looking in the top of the screen next to the colour options, it says ad. Also, just use the circle tool and hold shift instead of making a mask. Also, easy ease the keyframes with f9.
@andrewpach
@andrewpach 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Adam, sure you can do all of that. I don't use F9 to easy ease keyframes in tutorials since I use camtasia for recording where the default Pause / Play button is set to F9. Sure, there are so many ways of doing certain things in After Effects that the same tutorial could be recorded 20 times with different techniques, the point is to get the job done, in a manner that is convenient for you and won't take too much unnecesary steps, you are right. But then again, there is nothing wrong with doing it like I have shown in this video :)

Andrzej Pach • PowerPoint, After Effects, Design Of course. I never meant to contradict your method. We appreciate the time you spent to make the tutorial. 👍. As a tip, you can right click the keyframes , press keyframe assistant, then easy ease

I had the same problem with camtasia... but you can easily change the hotkey settings. 1.) open the camtasia recorder 2.) Click on Tools, then options 3.) a new tab opens and you wanna navigate to "hotkeys" 4.) now you can easily change the shortcut combination for each option :D I know I am late and you probably found that out but hey.... nice tutorial btw :D

First I want to thank you for this great tutorial. But I have one problem. After I finished this circle I want to use it in Shotcut under one of my timers. Do you know how I can export this Circle or record it?
@andrewpach

You mean the video editor shotcut? You could render out the circle as a transparent MOV and have a video file of it. that would be the only way if you want to bring it outside of After Effects

it's create a mask, it does exist. Just make your after effects bigger on the screen and you will see the icon. Did you select your pen tool or rectangle tool ? If you don't see just reset the view of all panels, you can do that in the right upper corner, going for standard

@andrewpach
@andrewpach 6 жыл бұрын
As mentioned, this is just one way of doing it and the tutorial didn't focus on the most efficient way. This was part of a bigger animation and at that point I found it convenient (sic!) to make it that way :P

can you do this in powerpoint too? XDDD
@andrewpach
@andrewpach 6 жыл бұрын
Why do you ask and what's with all the "XDDD"? Well powerpoint isn't perfectly suited for motion graphics so my answer will be no. You can do something similar but it would take way too much time and would be counter-intuitive to make. You can have some fun with animations in PPT, but it's far more simplified!

If you would like help please share more info, it's too generic :) maybe a screenshot or what version of AE do you use? After effects had the mask tool since forever, so are you following the exact steps from the tutorial ?
@andrewpach
@andrewpach 7 жыл бұрын
Please just press Q, create a shape layer (by creating any shape, or right clicking on the timeline -> new -> shape layer, and then by pressing on the rectangle tool you will have an icon for "TOOL CREATES SHAPE" and "TOOL CREATES MASK". If not, simply your after effects window is too small and it isn't displayed, Please make your workspace bigger or select the entire TOOLS panel (by clicking on it) and put it somewhere else - it will appear :)

One thing that looks very messed up is how the circle looks, It is too sharp and does not look like half a circle. Another thing that really bothers me is how they key frames are not eased. My biggest tip is to kind make sure it looks REALLY nice before you make the tutorial.
@andrewpach
@andrewpach 7 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, it's not like I can spend 15 miuntes on a tutorial which no one will watch, there are things which you can adjust. As for hte sharpness you can simply enable motion blur and the keyframes should be eased by hand, that's obvious. I wanted to show some important principles and how to approach such designs with this tutorial, it's not like that is super advanced motion, but once you would learn how to create such a circle you can tinker it out to be better :)

I completely understand that you eventually were seeking a more advanced video, but you have to admit that my tutorials show UPFRONT, in the first 20-30 seconds what they will be about and what animation you are going to create at the end :) So no false hopes or expectations rise once you know what to expect. Thank you for watching the video and I hope that it was helpful in anyway to you, even if you know some better solutions :)

Absolutely wrong way to do this... Just make a circle with the stroke you want, add it a trim path. Animate End, Start o even Offset values. Finished.
@andrewpach
@andrewpach 6 жыл бұрын
Oh how not to love to comments "Absolutely wrong way to do this....." when it comes to After Effects. Sure, thank you for the comment but this tutorial is geared to be about the keyword "radial wipe effect", not "what is the best way to create a animated stroke", you have to understand that from a creators perspective. I like to teach each element on a simple example, I did a logo animation project in that case and I had the idea to use Radial Wipe here so I just went for it, and in the end it all did look good. Sure, there are many ways to achieve same results in AE (more and less efficient) but I wouldn't call this "absolutely wrong".

First of all thanks for the reply. Forgive me if I sounded "too hard" or even some kind of hater, but here's my point. I think making tutorials is fantastic, a great way to spread knowledge and help others. I've learnt so much with all kind of tutorials. BUT, reaching to some point in a very tedious and harder way than other, may result in a misleading tutorial, which actually will create bad habits, making the purpose of the tutorial just the opposite of what is meant to be. Of course that teaching how to use radial wipe is necessary, but bro, you must agree with me that this is not by far the best example, when you can get the same results in 2 clicks. Having said that, again, thanks for you contributions, I'm actually subscribing
@andrewpach
@andrewpach 6 жыл бұрын
Yes mate, but using trim paths is always the obvious choice and as you can see this tutorial is part of an entire logo animation which I was teaching so I wanted to show various ways. Trim paths is so often used in my tutorials so my following already probably knows how to use it :P All in all I think as you mentioned altough it's terious it's worth to know about it
