Hello my dear Language People!
So many of you have asked me this question: Hey Stefano, how do you actually start learning a NEW LANGUAGE?
Today I'm finally answering this question by sharing with you all an overview of my best 7 steps I usually follow when I approach a completely new language.
I hope some of these can be helpful for you as well!
0:00 - 1:10 What's today's topic?
1:11 - 2:33 Each language a different story?
2:34 - 3:43 Step 1
3:44 - 5:03 Step 2
5:04 - 6:19 Step 3
6:20 - 7:56 Step 4
7:57 - 8:39 Step 5
8:40 - 9:46 Step 6
9:47 - 10:47 Step 7
10:48 - 11:29 What's coming up next?
So, did you start learning a new language this year?
Share in the comments, I really want to hear what you've been up to! :)
By the way, we just hit 25K SUBSCRIBERS and I'd like to THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for your continued support, despite the various gaps in my activity here on KZbin!
I'd like to celebrate this, so stay tuned for a poll of some sort that I'll put on in the near future :)
Happy everything! ;)
Stefano

Hello from Russia. In such funny times as today, it is especially interesting to learn about the life of people in Finland. And at the same time, I want to attract interest in the history of this country, since I collect coins of the Principality of Finland, when the country was part of the Russian Empire until 1917. I will be glad to hear your opinions under my new video on this topic, and I would like to find like-minded people on the topic from Finland, to see the antique shops of this country. I will be glad!

I highly recommend learning the prettiest languages ever Norse / Icelandic / Dutch / English / Norwegian / Gothic / Faroese / Danish / Welsh / Breton / Cornish 2gether as they are way too pretty not to know, and Slovene and Hungarian and Latvian are also very epic, and I recently started learning Latvian which is kinda Slavic to some extent, so it probably has more than 4 cases, but Slovene is definitely the easiest and prettiest Slavic language and I think it only has four noun forms, but I am not sure because I am beginner level in Slovene - I am upper advanced level in Dutch and advanced level in Norwegian and upper intermediate level in Icelandic and Norse and German (very close to advanced level in Icelandic) and mid intermediate level in Welsh / Swedish / French / Brazilian Portuguese / Italian at the moment, and I noticed that in Icelandic and Norse the cases are very easy because the noun endings and the adjective endings are exactly the same for each group of nouns and adjectives, and there aren’t many exceptions, so I can even guess the endings of new words most of the times because I know the patterns very well and I can also usually tell what type of noun a new noun is, especially the nouns with certain word endings in nominative are very easy to guess, so in Norse languages it is similar to how the different endings are in Latin languages such as Latin and Spanish and French which also follow the same patterns, and I am native level in Spanish and writer level in English, so I can easily understand how Latin languages and other Germanic languages work, and the grammar is actually very similar in all these languages and in most other European languages!

I highly recommend not learning non-pretty languages such as Chinese or Japanese or Korean or the Thracian-Aslavic language that’s been incorrectly classified as a ‘Latin’ language and incorrectly classified as a ‘category 1’ language despite the fact that it doesn’t look and doesn’t sound Latin in any way and doesn’t have the Latin verb / noun endings etc and is at least category 4 as Polish and Czech, as there is no reason to learn non-pretty language with mostly non-pretty words, that are also unnecessarily complicated, plus non-pretty words are naturally hard to memorize and requires a lot more repetition than pretty words or that have impossible writing systems with characters or extremely difficult alphabets - Slovene and Hungarian and Breton and Manx and Welsh etc and true Latin languages such as Galician / Latin / Esperanto / Pretarolo / Sicilian / Venetian / Walloon / Gallo etc are are way better options, so I highly recommend learning these pretty and easy languages instead, as one can learn 10 or even 15 pretty and easy languages, as opposed to only learning one or two extremely hard languages, and choosing wisely, by only choosing the pretty and easy languages, is the key to being a successful polyglot, and learning them 2gether saves a lot of years and is a lot more fun, so I highly recommend starting to learn all the target languages in the first year of learning, for example, I have over 50 target languages, and I have started learning at least 20 of them in my first year of learning languages on my own, and I prioritize the prettiest languages like Icelandic / Norse / Dutch / Norwegian / Gothic / Welsh etc the most, and I focus mostly on vocab, and I revise previously learnt words at least 30 times actively over a longer period of time, until each word becomes very automatic, and I have noticed a lot of progress fast, like, now I can understand most sentences and most words I see in Icelandic, after focusing mostly on Icelandic for about 4 months or so, and I got to an upper advanced level in Dutch after about 350 hours of study, and now I started learning many new words in Welsh and Slovene, so hopefully I will get to an advanced level in a few months!

By the way, languages that are learnt to an advanced level in or to a native speaker level naturally get better with time, so one of my goals is to learn at least 15.000 words in the most important target languages in the first three to five years of learning, while also learning many other target languages on the side, and in a few years they I will probably be fluent in many of them, and they will keep getting better over the nest 6 years or ten years - I want to have a fully developed automatic mode in fifteen to twenty of my target languages, and I also want to know the words in the other target languages permanently, even though they probably won’t be as automatic as the others, because in half of my target languages I am okay with just knowing the words and understanding the written language, which is a lot easier to achieve, whereas fully developing an automatic mode in a new language or languages takes a lot more éxpòsure to the language(s) and words and a lot of typing and using the language(s) a lot over a longer period of time!

Re the case system and understanding how cases work, in truth, every language uses cases, and they are a very logical part of the grammar of a language, and every language automatically uses the cases every time there is a subject and a direct object and a third party etc in the sentence, and without cases, there could be no proper sentences and no way to express any actual ideas and actions, it’s just that some languages have different endings for different cases for nouns and for adjectives etc, for example, Icelandic and Norse and Gothic which are the most alpha languages ever have the 4 main cases with different endings, while English has the same form for nouns and adjectives, but the pronouns still have the different forms in English most of the times, for example, the pronoun i is the nominative form which is the case of the subject aka the one doing the action in the sentence, while me is the accusative form and accusative is the case of the direct object which is usually the one that the action is being done to or the thing that is given or said etc to the third party, while to me would be the dative form tho English doesn’t have a different dative form unlike German which has mir and Norse / Icelandic which have mér and Faroese which has mær and dative is the case of the third party and the one being given the book or the one that one says something to etc, and genitive is the case that always implies possession in all languages that I know of, so in most Germanic languages the nouns have an s or ‘s ending in genitive and my / his / its etc are the genitive forms of the pronouns! In the sentence ‘the guy gives (to) me a book’ the guy is the subject so it’s in nominative and a book is the direct object aka the thing that’s being given to the third party which is in accusative and me / to me is in dative which indicates the third party that the book (the direct object) is being given to and the dative noun or pronoun is also referred to as the indirect object, so verbs such as to give and to say to etc usually take the dative case in all languages that I know of, while to be takes the nominative case, and to have / to own / to see someone or something etc take the accusative case as they only involve a direct object and no third party is involved, so, in a sentence like ‘he sees me’ he is in nominative because he is the subject aka the one doing the seeing and the word me represents the direct object and is in accusative! If one is learning languages that have different forms for nouns and adjectives and verbs etc, I highly recommend learning the patterns very well, because they usually follow the same patterns, so the endings will be the same for each group of nouns / adjectives / verbs etc most of the times, so knowing the endings very well makes it easier to use the right forms and to understand how the language works, and if one knows the word endings and the base words automatically, it’s very easy to memorize all the other forms by reading the declensions and conjugations of each word once or twice or thrice on different days, and reading a lot of subs / text etc in the language, and by the time one gets to a native speaker level, one will automatically know how to use them! For example, I learned Spanish in childhood in a 100% passive way by hearing it spoken in movies and TV series and by hearing and learning lyrics in Spanish almost every day over the course of three years, and I never studied Spanish grammar, but I naturally know how to use each form of the verbs and nouns and adjectives etc correctly, because I have heard them hundreds of times used in context and I fully developed an automatic Spanish mode, so I can tell if a form is right because I know what sounds right in Spanish and what doesn’t, as one naturally develops a sense for what sounds right in the new language by the time one gets to a native speaker level! So, one shouldn’t worry too much about grammar and conjugations and declensions as a beginner or intermediate, and I highly recommend focusing mostly on vocab, like, ninety percent of the time focusing on actively learning vocab and ten percent of the time focusing on grammar and sounds and diphthongs and pronunciation etc, because learning the actual words is key to learning the language and understanding the language, and the more thousands of words the learner learns, the easier it is for the learner to understand the grammar and to naturally learn when to use each form of the word! Latin and Spanish and French and most Germanic languages tend to have different forms, which follow the same patterns most of the times! I must admit that I actually like it better when languages have a proper grammar with different pretty word endings, as there is a lot more variation, and less repetition of the same form in sentences / lyrics etc, so I highly recommend learning pretty languages with different forms like Icelandic and Norse and Gothic and Forn Svenska and Latin etc, which are also great for poetry and lyrics!

Дя́кую 🙏

Very interesting approach. I think that even a chaotic learning process might be successful, but yes, it's easier to choose a small number of resources and stick to them. Anyway, the main thing is fun and motivation in the process. I might have started a new language this year, I'm not sure at this stage, so it's too early to talk about it...🙂

Danke Dir! I agree, you can have success in the long run even by jumping from a resource to the other, but I believe that some structure is bound to be helpful in terms of effectiveness - but then of course, to each their own! Thank you Stefano. I think learning a language is easier if there is something in that culture that you find very interesting - Korean dramas, Japanese anime, Urdu couplets, Hindi movies, French cuisine, etc. so that you soak in the language without even realising it when you watch shows featuring them. Could you suggest interesting topics related to each language you talk about? That would be helpful 😊

Thanks so much for the comment and the interesting take! It's a really good point you make and it makes absolute sense, but I have to admit that it hasn't always been this way around for me. I mean, in most cases I probably discovered the culture and something new I would love only AFTER approaching the language, and through the language. For example Portuguese literature, or pretty much everything about the Finnish culture... One obvious example of what you mention, instead, must be Japanese for me, as anime had already been in my life for a while when I started learning it. :)

Thank you very much for your reply. I think it must be the amount of work you put in that helps you master the language fast. BTW, in case you are thinking of learning an Indian language, please consider Malayalam which is a Dravidian language with a lot of influence from the Indo-Aryan language Sanskrit. It is also agglutinative like Finnish and has loan words from foreign languages including Portuguese, Dutch and Arabic. For the German connection, you may please watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6ncq6uLqb6mfq8 (I like listening to Finnish and would like to learn it. But I see that every Finnish word is different in English and the three Indian languages that I speak! I also don't know where I can use it)😊

Chat GPT has created a new problem for us, language lovers. It has provided a way to learn virtually every known language, making it hard to decide which languages to learn. Before, some languages were excluded from the "learnable languages" list, despite Google Translate. For example, Google Translate does not provide transliteration for some languages, like Hebrew or languages using the Arabic script. Chat GPT does. Moreover, Chat GPT can create customized texts according to your interests and your level. Some people also use it to practice speaking using certain plug-ins, but IMO its speech sounds too robotic. Chat GPT's grammar is not very reliable either. Even so, the choice of languages to learn is overwhelming, but I always stick to my old rule: "Do not study more than 3 languages in one day". This does not mean that next day I'll study the same 3 languages. I may keep the 2 and choose a different one for the third slot. Or I may only study 2 or even 1, if I am busy with other things. Of course, there is no limit in the languages I use passively, such as watching KZbin videos. 😀

@@linguaEpassioneI agree. There are 7 tones in Cherokee, and while I grew up in the land of my ancestors and those tones are embedded in the place names, so much is context also. For example, ama (ah-mah) is salt while ama (pronounced: AH-mah) is water. When my oldest son first tried out his Mandarin at a restaurant in Beijing, he used the wrong tone and asked the server for a nap, instead of a glass of water. She figured it out, though!

I began to study Tamil because I’m gonna visit Sri Lanka in the last week of March. I’m Japanese, and I heard my native tongue and Tamil have a lot of similarities in both grammar and vocabulary. So far I’m tackling the letters and the pronunciation. The spelling system is pretty complicated and I’m struggling. I hope I can manage to learn at least several basic phrases for tourists.

What do you recommend to do if I have a beginner resource with text + audio? Should I try to read first, then listen or the other way around? Or something else entirely?

Ciao Stefano, I like the idea of taking loud to myself, I used to do it a lot while learning languages at school. I am curious, how many and what languages do you know at such a level that you can communicate freely? Cheers, Agata

Ciao and thanks a bunch for your comment! I can communicate in 10 languages and I'm at (constant) beginner level in at least 2 more - you can see which languages these are by taking a look at the little flags on my channel banner (they are in order of proficiency btw haha :D )

Kyllä se sieltä tulee. Minä puupää kirjoitin laudaturin englannista ja ruotsista sekä magna cum laude approbaturin ranskasta, tosin olen jo aika pitkälti unohtanut ruotsin ja ranskan mutta ajattelin opetella ne uudestaan, aloittaen ranskasta.

Googlaa Kielibuusti, se vaikuttaa hyvältä sivustolta oppia suomea, en laita linkkiä koska KZbin toisinaan deletoi viestit joissa on linkki ulkopuoliselle verkkosivulle.

Hi and thanks for sharing your view. I don't agree about the idea that some languages are not worth learning because it depends so much on so many different factors and personal goals or preferences, but I respect your opinion :)
