Adams 35, good boat and being steel is very solid around all those reefs. I have owned my Adams 35 centreboard round bilge steel yacht 'Saaremaa' for 20 years, moored on Lake Macquarie, NSW. If you are making 6-7 knots on passage you are doing well. Keep up the sailing and stay on top of the rust that never sleeps.

What a beautiful sail. I think you're getting better all the time. The fact is the environment, wind, tides, waves, currents are never ever gonna be the same as any other time. To many parts. Proud of myself today, I only watched the shadow dance three times. I also ran back the shark/croc talk a couple times, and I'm still not sure if I got it. 😉 Good times.I'm glad the cut on Phoebes hand wasn't worse. Stay safe. ❤🙏

Good advice I was given on sail trim is “if in doubt, let it out”, and if you are rounding up and losing control, reduce sail area, usually by reefing the main, get some practise sailing upwind, sail trim is very important to make good headway, learn how to flatten the sails to depower the boat, plenty of KZbin videos on sail trim 😊

You two are making excellent progress. I want you to feel more comfortable and confident on your own hook than a mooring. You never know when a mooring was last inspected and the condition of its various parts but you’re totally aware of your own anchor and rode. In clear water, just have a look before departing the boat or take a dive to make sure it’s set to your satisfaction. We’re onboarding now after evacuating from the threatening Bridge Fire ( presently the largest fire in California and the Country, for that matter.) We don’t have to worry about dragging because we’re in a parking lot. Really appreciate watching the “New Kids” and escaping our current reality for yours. Cheers.

A Samoan rugby playing mate, once gave me a green coconut to open, no instructions. When I finally got it sorted, I said "what do you think.?" He looked at me and said "ahh yes the work of a palagi,..or palangi." (White person.) Yeah it was a bit of a mess. Then he showed me how to make a husking stake. Took him about 5 minutes. And use the weight of the nut to do the work for you. Btw Phoebe,, the surface is the kill zone for crocs. Google Ben Fogle and Nile River crocs. Once you're under they ignore you. Usually.!! Anyway they're Maneaters. You're OK.,!! 🤣 Thank you again for sharing. Loving your channel. Hey if you ever need an experienced 3rd crew member to help with the watches, let me know. Um I eat anything. I don't know if I'm normal. If it's hot, I wear appropriate stuff. Or not. I have a gsoh. I never take life seriously. I play guitar. Hi crew, To get better balance in the boat while reaching and running learn about vang sheeting and sheet sheeting. I think more vang and more ease on your main will set the sail up better so the boat doesn’t flip between headsail over powering and mainsail over powering. A tighter leach/roach will stop the boat rolling as much.
@Thenewkidsonthedock
@Thenewkidsonthedock 2 ай бұрын
Hey Chris thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts, we don’t actually have a vang on the boom. We have always sailed the boat without one. Our composite coach house gets in the way making it hard to get a vang on that goes more that 300mm down the boom. Which doesn’t provide much mechanical advantage I would imagine but i might need to do some more research as I’d love to reduce roll! Cheers, Josh

Nothing wrong with Adams/Radford designs, though they are definitely better offwind as appropriate for a cruising boat. The narrow beam means that you have less righting moment for upwind speed, but less drag and so less load on rig, hull and steering. The two major aspects of your boats performance are your sail cinfiguration & trim and the sails themselves. Your sails are shot. This means that compared to a new sail you get more heel and less drive due to the camber in the sail moving too far aft and the sails being too full. A moderate displacement easily driven boat like yours does not need deep sails. Also your boat is sensitive to load - it will dail much bettet with less weight on board, and its sensitive to where you stow stuff - you dont want the boat to be down by the head. Your boat is way better than most cruisers ever get abd when sailed properly is fast and seaworthy.
@1425race
@1425race 2 ай бұрын
Agree entirely with this comment. Although it's a daunting financial commttment there is nothing like new sails to massively improve the performance of your yacht. If you find a sailmaker that makes his own sails rather than order them from an international loft to a standard design, he will come down to your yacht, discuss your requirements, take all the measurements of mast and rig and design and make the sails in his loft. He would then install them and go out with you on a test sail, suggest any adjustments to your rig and if they need any tweaking, take them back to do the adjustments. New sails will fine tune your sailing skills as well. Suddenly your helm corrections will be minor, you will go to windward better with more speed, trimming will be easier and give you more feedback for correct trim and balance. Lastly, you will get to your destination quicker. The design power of your yacht is in the sails not your engine.

Hello my friend thanks for taking the time to enlighten us. You’re a wealth of knowledge and it’s always interesting learning more about sailing, especially in relation to our boat. Our sails are pretty bagged out you’re right, you’ve really motivated me to get some weight off the boat as we still have a lot of our possessions stored on board now that we have no land attachments. I’ve always felt our bow to be pretty heavy with our oversized anchor and 70m of 10mm short link chain, plus we have a fresh water tank in the V berth plus lots of stuff stored there. I’m a 38ft hoarder living in the body of a 35ft Adams 😅 Appreciate your comments and the information they contain! Cheers mate - Josh

Joe Adams used to rate many his designs as being Melbourne to Asaka race capable. My own yacht is an Adams 13 his advice to me was to sail it upright and to reef early. Anyone can sail on a fair breeze; few can sail well in light airs.

coconut chop. Throw it down and while arm in travel twist yr wrist to get extra veolocity and relax also - especially on impact. Any tension in yr grip will take energy away from blade and be absorbed into yr arm. Same with any tension while doing it - your muscles will be fighting against each other. So "its a relaxed trowing motion" and yeah - extra caution to keep free hand well clear.

The hull speed of a 35ft displacement boat is 7.9 knots, so if you're doing in the 7's you're pretty close to hull speed, and you'll have a hard time going any faster, so it seems to me you're sailing pretty well already, read up about hull speed and how it affect boats, once you exceed hull speed the power requirements for every knot of boat speed goes up exponentially so if your over 9 knots under sail you might be at risk of breaking things, I don't know your boats design and it's been a very long time since I studied boat design stuff, so discuss with those that know your boat's design, but with that size boat you should be very happy with the speeds you're seeing 👍

Boats should always have some weather helm, it’s a safety thing, they round up to windward and stop if the helm is dropped or they are overpowered. Lee helm results in a boat that accelerates and runs downwind if it is overpowered. Too much weather helm to windward, try a flatter mainsail. If it is old and blown out it’s often the issue.

Hey Paul that’s a really interesting point thank you for raising, it makes a lot of sense. The main being over sheeted has definitely caused plenty of our troubles, it’s a fine line between having it further out but shading the jib. We are definitely due for a new main at some point, we better start saving 😅. Cheers, Josh
@paulfitzgerald1466
@paulfitzgerald1466 2 ай бұрын
@@Thenewkidsonthedock I have a glass Adams 36, and assume you have a large main compared to the jib like mine. If you are talking about the main luff fluttering upwind when the sheet is let out and the jib is still sheeted in, it is normal, particularly as the wind builds up. The slot effect matters in light winds, but not in heavier winds, when the jib and main become a single foil, letting out the main stops the boat from being overpowered, but doesn’t affect boat speed.
@pmorph
@pmorph 2 ай бұрын
I can't see if you have them already,but telltales off the leech of your main are really helpful in telling when the main is at the right angle-- to me, you had it in too tight on the broad reach and the jib far too out on the pole-- again I couldn't see the tell tales in the video. The tell tales really help tell you what is going on with the sails. Adams boats are good-- I had a Mottle 33 4 years ago-- I was amazed at how good a sailing boat it was. Also, you could think about setting up a vimeo channel, then you can charge for your videos.

Hey mate! Josh here, I will get onto putting some telltales on the leech of the main. I think I had the main pulled so far in so as to not shade the jib, as I’ve learned from comments on here that would have seriously contributed to the weather helm. We are so fortunate to have picked such a capable boat for our first to learn on. Will chat with Phoebe about your suggestion again, from memory the turn off for us was another platform we had to pay for to put the video up on. Do you watch many sailing videos on there? Cheers

"Fin keels have less directional stability and downwind performance" is something thats commonly stated and IT'S NOT TRUE. This is all about hull shape. The two boats I have sailed with the best directional stability and downwind performance are both fin keel & spade rudder. Both are long narrow boats with symetrical hull lines and its this last factor which is dominant
