Is there a way an adult could learn to read Braille at home, maybe like a tactile course book or something? I'm very sorry sighted and suspect that one day, even my glasses won't be much help. Would be great to get ahead of the game and learn this before I need it. I am currently based in Brighton. I think I spotted one of your centres, or possibly your HQ here.

Hi, yes, absolutely! You can find out more and order from us on 03031239999 or at braille.mailbox@rnib.org.uk - we do have a few at-home course options for people to learn braille that you can purchase.

I was visually impaired all through school and personally my life would’ve turned out 100% better if I had been allowed to go to a normal boy in school all children should go to blind school I lived in a world that was not visually impaired and I was expected to be cited none of my teachers knew anything about having a visually impaired student. I can remember wanting to go to computer class and being taken out of the class because as a teacher said you can’t see the screen you can’t do this class so I spent the rest of the semester stapling papers together in the office because of course Because none of the staff knew there was this thing called assessable technology since I didn’t know about it they didn’t know to get it for me. The worst part was for those entire four years especially in high school I had no books finally lol last year I finally was able to get I think one large print textbook that my science book was hand enlarged every single day by the teacher who felt bad that I didn’t have a book this buddy with the rest of the children. I was the one that actually discovered that if I had certain color paper I could read and see the print I also in my last year developed a place that sold specialized school equipment to blind children so I was able to get things like braille graph paper I was able to get a couple of materials like simple paper that I could use. I was so freaking angry I was so angry that I didn’t have anything like the other kids and I was completely alone. Even worse when I tried to transfer to the actual blind school in my last year of school they said well it’s too late you’re already eight on your last year it’s not gonna be worth the effort blah blah blah and that was the end of it well again I was left behind because turns out there was a lot of my state that if you were a blind disabled child you could stay at a blind school till you were 21 years of age so at age 18 I was kicked out a special programs I couldn’t do hardly anything and yet here was his opportunity to fix all of that damage and all of that problems in trade me it had to be a blind person and they let me down again. I taught myself how to use some very basic things like zoom text and I was able to work using that program I would fuck my father had to send me out of state to learn how to use a cane so I can get a guide dog. I found out later the reason that I had been looked over for training was because I’m special programs and basically they considered me too dumb and damaged to be worth actually spending any money on trading me to do anything imagine for a minute that your side is taken away how do you use a phone or computer how do you do anything to this day I do not know jars to this day I’m struggling I know a few letters in braille I’m trying to teach myself but it’s very hard to teach yoursel Please send your child to a blind school so that they have a chance it’s nice there helping them a day a week whatever but trust me it will not be enough they need to know how to do everything from the blind point of view .
