I love your passion for languages! Very sweet that you’re learning Dutch and even moved to be near to your boyfriend. I’ve been learning Spanish since my later years of high school, because it’s my family’s native tongue, and it is still a challenge lol. But I’ve reached the point of reading chapter books which has introduced me to a lot of words and phrases I otherwise wouldn’t have come across. Language learning is truly a process where the learning never really ends, especially if it’s not your native language and you didn’t go through the school system to learn it, in my opinion. It’s interesting and fulfilling~

Groeten, Henk.

I speak French, English (both fluently) and I have an intermediate level in Greek (between B1 & B2). I've decided today to start learning Russian, but needed some motivation, and you truly gave me that. ❤️ I had tried learning Russian with my husband at my uni, but really didn't like my teacher's teaching method (she would make us repeat sounds and phrases, without covering the basics first, such as learning the alphabet, when for me reading the word is essential to memorize it better). My husband loved that teacher because he already had a good ear for the language (he had taken a beginner's class like 10 years ago 👀) and didn't need any visual support. He took zero notes the whole semester and still got excellent grades. I was so jealous! But like you said in another video, we all learn differently depending on our own strengths, and mine is very much visual. I can't wait to be able to talk and connect with my neighbours (the man speaks English quite well - with a very thick accent I still need to get used to 😅 - and his wife only speaks Russian and Belarussian and understands very little English) as they invited us over and I really felt the language barrier (they sang folk songs and showed us popular Russian songs!). That's what we should always keep in mind: going through the pain is worth it if it helps us at the end of the day to open up to the world and build those bridges of communication. Not only is language essential for that, but also knowing more about a people's culture and worldviews, which goes beyond language, but can be better understood through language as well. I've experienced it with Greek (and I still do) and I've been changed forever by being exposed to such a widely different universe than my own, and it's been a fascinating and enriching journey so far (but I did cry in those first months because of the aorist and those passive verbs, don't get me wrong there lol).

The closer you get to France the more the French language starts to have a subtle influence on Dutch. The Brabants accent (south of the Netherlands, just north of Flanders) is like a mix between the "harsher" sound up north and the more sing-song-y Dutch they have in Belgium, although once you get deep into the rural areas the accent can get so thick it might as well be its own language. And once you move further south to Wallonia? Baby they don't speak Dutch at all anymore, they just speak French. But probably with a bit of a Dutch texture - though you'd have to ask the French about that.
@justmonika14 ай бұрын
Anyway all of that is to say that the Flemish accent is lovely.

My question for you, Jo: You touched on not sleeping well because you're excited, but when you're learning a new language do you wake up in the middle of the night thinking about it? Is your brain trying to process it in your sleep and it's like you can't shut that part of your brain off and it disturbs your sleep? I had this with Arabic for the first several months, now I've found it's happening again that I'm studying Greek. And it's annoying!!! 😆

What I find the most frustrating right now in italian are all of those different word endings that I‘l just have to memorize. In english, the most frustrating part is, that I know I can sprak and write and understand the language very well while really struggling with the grammatical rules. Most of the time I can just go by what sounds good, but If I‘m not sure once, I can‘t come back to some rule that I can follow and find the correct form. But I‘ll get there.

I'm a native Dutch speaker from Suriname, so your accent sounds super European to me 😂 I'm a pretty fluent English speaker and am currently learning Korean, Thai, and Chinese in bouts and spurts and not all at the same time. As a native Dutch speaker, these Asian languages lack a lot of (I call them such) extraneous bits. Also, as a native Dutch speaker, I often find Dutch massively confusing. All those different verb conjugations are a headache. Things like articles and word gender are a complete non-issue with these Asian languages, and, as such, they seem like much more simplified or, rather, pure languages to me. Thai and Chinese have the difficulty of script, but if you're only learning to speak, they feel like easy languages to pick up, to me at least. Korean has an easy script, but learning vocabulary and grammar requires intense effort, and you need a basic level before you feel like you're actually learning and absorbing and capable of using the language. But these languages are a fun challenge, and I enjoy learning them a lot. Ik wens je veel succes in je Nederlands/Vlaams lessen!

About the world order... I think it's more natural to learn it just by hearing it over and over. I mean.. if you have to think every time you speak 'subject verb object adjective' or whatever.. I don't think you can every learn to think that quickly while you're speaking. That's why I really believe in comprehensible input. At some point the word order feels just as natural in the other language as the word order in your own language, because that's actually how I as a dutch person learned english.

I am learning Khmer. I am doing my first preply lesson today. I really want to stick with this language since my husband is Cambodian, but I have dabbled in Japanese and French in the past. Pronunciation for me is going to be difficult. I have a hard time getting my mouth to say the word the right way. If that makes any sense.
