See my other videos on how Fusion 360 is virtually free CAD, where it fits in a survey of the CAD market and as such I recommend it as the best free CAD software. Whether you're a student or an inventor or a hobby 3D printer, this is a good choice and my 16 part series will get you going with some confidence.

Luckily I know someone who owns the real thing so once I can get the dimensions of it then I'll know the rest. Plus I know someone who has a 3D printer. Richard, the thought of using a track pad for CAD makes me shudder. I did enjoy experimenting with the first CAD program that was a success on the iPad (its called Onshape) but I never really used it; I couldn't wait to get back to my workstation with a good three button mouse and a large hi res monitor. The other big improvement for CAD is an additional spacemouse for the left hand but I haven't lashed out on one of those yet.

You're welcome, Jacki, you won't be a novice for long. The curve is a neat trick but its really only a timesaver. Its possible to get the same result with arcs or circles and a bit of trimming. I came back again to redraw #3 on my own, didn't take long to get stuck and had to follow along with the video. No big deal, getting to dimensions from the origin to a line for some reason took longer than a regular dimension but it finally worked as it should. One other thing is when I went to extrude it would not do it. I noticed that the 2 lines on each end, 10mm, were the only 2 lines that had not turned black like the rest of the drawing. After drawing new lines that didn't change anything the extrude worked. End results, finished the drawing and moved on.

Thanks Gary, regarding your view, if you've been able to complete the part itself, the orientation doesn't matter for the 16 basic tutorials. However I understand that you may be very keen to get this right and so I've published my Preference settings just a couple of weeks ago, see here; kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4fae32shrdknMU One to look out for is on the general page almost halfway down; Default modeling orientation. I keep mine on 'z up'. In future tutorials I'll be more particular about the choice of plane with for that first sketch. and I'm currently working on a video about four ways to re-orient your part. This will be published within a week or two.

This comments app won't allow me to post the link however you can go to my Channel and search for the title "Download from Grabcad", go to the chapter "Fusion 360 Licenses" beginning at 2:45 I will update these 16 tutorials soon but in the meantime I've done a video titled "User Interface Update to the 16…" which you can find in the same playlist as the 16 basic ones. This will hopefully bridge the gap and get you started to where you can follow along.

I think your tutorials are excellent and am in the troes of going through them, but having difficulty in starting eqach time with selecting the face! I have the latest version of 360 and of course the tools are somewhat different to the older version! I find that when I select a face it does not do what you do so simply, ie when you select line and draw it is so simple, on my s[version the view stays isometric and i cannot get a plane view. If I then select the face, right or left etc the lines seem to be invisible . Any suggestions please. G

You can use the little XYZ widget/spinner in the upper right to make sure you're 1) in the right plane and 2) viewing from the right angle. It's a nice little reference and has a home button if you get "lost." When doing the extrude, glance at the arrow along the line of the extrusion, and drag it in the opposite direction if necessary before executing the operation. Of course you could also do a negative value for your extrusion (ex, -50mm vs 50mm) and extrude backwards, as well, but that's not good practice and can get confusing. Hope it helps! It's possible to snap a surface of an object to a plane (or to another object, an edge, and a few other things), so if you're "in the wrong plane" you can easily move it about and get it oriented as you wish, but it's moot for these lessons.

Arnold... Functions are alien to my version here too. Due to my previous efforts, I can still accomplish them in various ways,. However, I do find it time consuming and highly distracting from trying to follow along. No fault of yours, but it was a big factor in my blunt-force decision to revert to my other software in my previous attempt to utilize Fusion 360 in a working commercial environment on my previous attempt, which I endured for a month before abandoning ship. I was able to generate code for a coule projects... but production had fallen into a tail-chasing vortex to zero...

@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly right Keith! Why? ...in a word, - ignorance. The basic tutorials series is now nearly three years old and I made them very soon after switching horses. I have taught the same material in all of the major CAD programs and I only delved into the Preferences of Fusion comparatively recently in order to answer questions like your own. Having no real interest in CAM back then, I was a bit blase about part orientation knowing that it is easily corrected in Fusion as well as in any specialised CAM software. Little did I suspect or anticipate the consternation that would cause to so many who are focused on CAM! So yes, you caught me however the revised tutorials which will begin to appear shortly are more carefully oriented from the get-go and the preferences I recommend will be the ones I publicly practice.

Hi Arnold Hope you are well and had as great an Xmas as covid allowed. Most of your tutorials are ok to follow - well done for that However, I have had a problem with this exercise that has driven me a little mad - haven't solved it but understand it a bit more now. Followed your instructions to the letter and when I go Finish Sketch, I don't get a true isometric view. I get a view where the part is flat on the red-green plane which is twisted at 45 degree. So when you extrude the part , it does so vertically from the plane. Doesn't stop you putting in the hole or the fillets but does make it difficult to spin the part to look at it. I think the problem is that the view I get is stuck in the red-green plane, but don't know how to change that. Interestingly, if I create the sketch in the Red-Blue or the Green-Blue planes, it works just fine (perhaps in the earlier exercises, that's what I did) Any thoughts? (I have checked that I changed the preferences that you mention in your UI Update video, but that didn't help)

Thanks Clem, Christmas was great here, its the symbol of all that motivates me and gives me a reason to get out of bed each day. COVID is nothing on all that. It sounds like you've done most of the tutorials? but you're coming back to this one which was a problem? but you've had success depending on which plane you chose for the original sketch? My understanding of your description of the problem is that you are ending up with a 2D isometric drawing on the red-green plane when you expect to see a 3D model. The purpose of this 3rd tutorial is simply to be one of a few that impress on your sub-conscious the workflow of sketch/feature, sketch/feature. If you have had any success in completing this model then you have achieved its purpose. As for taking control of the orientation of the model in 3D space, that is; in relation to the named planes, Clem, shelve it for later. You can most certainly delve in and understand this if you have the energy but I recommend that you complete the 16 tutorials as quickly as practically possible and move on to assemblies in the intermediate series of tutorials. You will naturally become more familiar with UI elements and details as you paint in the broad brush background. I need to provide the content on controlling orientation of models and will get to it eventually, in the meantime look up John Hackney's Yt channel and watch a few of his videos about the alignment tool. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmjSamyved1kf8k

Hi there Arnold, I have just finished all of your 16 Tutorials (plus all the new ones and extras), thank you for making it so much more understandable. As I don't have two screens, I used my wife's Laptop as the Player - worked a treat. After doing each one a few times, I was beginning to feel more confident, so I created a few relatively simple drawings. However, I have just spent a couple of hours trying to understand why the 2D Drawing consistently incorrectly dimensions a row of holes. I have checked the original Sketch, even Inspected it, and it shows the centre of the hole from the bottom edge as 20mm, but in the 2D Drawing it shows 20.5mm. This is really odd as it shows the overall width of the part is 125mm and it shows a distance of 105mm from the top edge. Any Ideas? By the way, it would be great if you could make a more in-depth Tutorial on creating 2D Drawings. Great Job from one of your cousins across the Tasman.

Anyway, had a play around thinking how I could modify the part and initially I tried with sketching tools but that did not work so thought about it and then realised we need to modify the model and found the "Push/Pull" feature which allowed me to modify the part to 30.0mm.

Nadav, usually if a dimension creates a conflict its because there is another one already nearby or a geometric constraint acting against it. Without being able to stand at your elbow to watch I can only suggest that you look for anything in your drawing that is different, if there is nothing that looks out of place, start over and go slowly and be watchful for anything that might be causing the error. If necessary go on with the next one and come back after a few more tutorials, a little bit of a break can make a difference when you are refreshed.

Fusion won't let me make the centre point to bottom dimension 30 mm. It auto jumps to 60. What do I do?
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 3 жыл бұрын
Jordy, let me just check off the obvious things first; when you place a dimension you get the blue focussed field, right? Just type the number you want. Second, its not about diameters/radius measurements is it? If that's the problem you'll see the diameter symbol or the R for radius in the dimension text. You did click the bottom line and the arc centre, right? From your description of the problem I get the idea that you have been successful in placing the dimension but it 'jumps', it does something unexpected, is that right?

@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 I'm not exactly sure what I did wrong, but somehow all the vertical lines were constrained after setting the radius. I redid the entire thing and now it works. Probably just a misclick right?

Judo, this is in reply to your question about getting the line to give a straight section after a curve; the normal way it works is that the line tool gives straight line sections left click after left click. To get the curve its left-click and drag instead of just left click. After a curve you left click (once) to place the end-point of the curve and then no more dragging if you want a straight line. So straight, curve, straight is a matter of click, click-drag, click. Does this answer the question?

Why does Fusion require users to start a new Sketch to Extrude 2D to 3D? If it's the same component why start a new Sketch?
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, fair question. Its a fundamental concept in all of the parametric CAD programs. Its common at the top of the market (where there are only two competitors) all the way to the cheapest and the free. It feels awkward to begin with but once you get it I think you will be at peace with it, at least in the sense of appreciating why it is so. I haven't included revolved extrusions in the 16 parts but you'll recognise the same method there too when you come to it. I try to introduce this repetitive sketch/feature workflow by multiple examples. Actually, reading your question again, you're asking why ANOTHER sketch? If that's the question its due to the need for a sketch to define every feature. You'll see that usually, each sketch is 'consumed' in the production of each feature.
