Hullo Kati, I do realize this was a eleven months ago, I can already see that you’re doing better. I did have a design firm we used hard firm illustration board, it was quite smooth too. Since illustration board can be quite costly I have learned that hot press watercolor paper is a very good surface for painting with gouache. I know it’s more of an illustrative or illustration media, and maybe not the best portrait but I have seen some amazing portrait paintings too! If you have a chance look at Jenna Rainey‘s channel here on KZbin, she has a video that does great explaining the difference in thicknesses of paint from tea to butter! I believe it is for beginners video on gouache or watercolor. Thanks for sharing your experience and I think you’re doing great! I was not really impressed with skill share but I know a lot of people make more money there than from KZbin, so that’s why so many people are trying to be affiliated with them. Hang in there and I hope you get your hours!

this video makes me feel better because i also felt quite frustrated with my first gouache paintings and gave up. But seeing how you're an amazing artist and very accomplished with your drawings and knowing your struggles during those first days was comforting. Of course we're not gonna be great the first time we try a new medium, specially one as tricky as gouache, so seeing how much you improved just by following painting tutorials and practising gives me hope haha. I might try going back to it.... Anyways! thank you for sharing! I hope you make many more gouache paintings in the future!

I'm so glad this video resonated with you! We can't deny how comforting it is to know others struggle as well when they are beginners. Sometimes isn't not easy to realize that struggling is a inevitable part of the mastering process. I hope you get back to gouache painting soon and keep being persistent, which will definitely lead to progress! ❤️

Hello Kati. I have been watching gouache tutorials as well and the people who paint incredibly well, what they do is - the first layer of color needs to be thin so it covers like watercolor would. Then as it dries, and yes it's important, you have to let it dry, they then add another coat (thinned enough to spread) on top to make it more opaque. This limits the brush lines and also helps the gouache to settle down. If you try and do it with one coat it will be blotchy and rough. I hope this helps. If you want to watch some professionals paint with gouache I can drop some names. 👍

Thank you! 🥹❤️ Here's the thing about out negative inner critic: Lately I've been listening to podcasts of neuroscientists, who talk about brain and it's functions. Turns out, the negative self talk is brain's naughty doings 😅 Since it's function is to mainly worry about survival, it does everything to make us stay away from any discomfort and anything unknown (doing a challenging is new and uncomfortable). So the solution is reprogramming out inner critic by changing out negative self beliefs about our capabilities and false beliefs about challenges (for ex: "it's too hard" etc). One of the best ways to do it are journaling or scripting or meditation, which I'm going to start practicing soon 😊 Thank you for your lovely feedback 💛 I'll consider alcohol marker challenge as well ❤️❤️ Sorry for the long reply 😅😅❤️

Skillshare is a goddamn sham. If you’re not choosing from their limited Original course library, the rest of the classes are very disorganized and subjective to the uploader’s skills at filming and teaching. That can vary widely. I have taken courses where the instructor’s lighting was so bad, you could barely make out the piece he was working on or the class was not logically organized and you were left confused on how to start. Although most classes don’t have this issue, the benefit doesn’t outweigh the cost. They pose as a low cost company, but month by month it just doesn’t make sense and I’m not doing nearly $200/yr . I left a class learning the very basics and then not having a follow up to complement my learnt skill. I find Domestika a lot more challenging. The instructors take you through a piece that seems daunting and advanced, but you get more out of that over a paltry class aimed at an ultra beginner. Plus, you get to pick and choose your courses and not be tied to a subscription model filled with limited classes that don’t push your skillsets further.
@Katiors
@Katiors Жыл бұрын
Lots of Skillshare classes I've taken or just tried for first several minutes, are for beginners, although I've come across some intermediate classes as well. When I start watching a class, I already know whether it's worth watching or not. Honestly I've never had any issue regarding class organization or quality there. As for Domestika, that's when the quality is 100% guaranteed, because it has it's own filming crew, which is cool! I've taken some good classes there as well and I think comparing the classes on both platforms would be a good video idea 😅 Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience ❤️

Unpopular opinion: Skillshare is a glorified youtube that adds nothing extra and costs you money. If I want to be serious about an art material I would rather join an artists patreon whose style resonates with me where they will share the process of a full painting/drawing all the way from beginning to advanced levels. All the clips I've seen from skillshare with 15 min classes and the like just make me believe there's nothing you can't get in youtube for free.
