nothing sounds better than a 6-71 Detroit, Two years ago I was stuck in the snow half way up the mountain on a winding road one morning and while I was on the phone calling in to the office to tell the boss I was gonna be parked there until the plows came through I had my window down then I heard the Detroit coming around the bend pushing snow, told the boss I wasn't gonna be stuck much longer, It was an old Pete like that one tandem dump , he was loaded with sand, pushing snow and the pipes were singing. When he went by the boss asked me what the hell was that and I said that's my ticket outta here, gotta go....

I learned on a 1954 Mack B, with a 5 & 4 Quadraplex. Reverse was on the Aux Side, so the Ole Gal had 20 forward Gears, and 5 Reverse. No Synchros, and Arm Strong Power Steering. Not much for Speed, but she would pull a house like it wasn't even there.

The second cable you pulled was the Emergency Shutoff! It closes a spring loaded gate at the blower that shut off the air. This is used in case the rack sticks or the governor shaft breaks and the traditional fuel shutoff won’t stop the engine. Can also be used if the engine is running away and using its own oil for fuel! All small Detroits had these on equipment.

Do the hood. Put it back to its former glory. Nothing sounds better than an old 6-71 Detroit. You ought to hear one out on an old logging road in the mountains, it echoes for miles. Back in the 70’s pops used to drive the exact truck as that, with a long logger, she screamed through the mountains. I’ll never for those days.

You run through the gears on the small shifter, then put in neutral and grab the next gear with the main transmission big shifter. You have to be quick before you loose you runs. I learned back in 1975
@dustinfurness2155
@dustinfurness2155 Жыл бұрын
I’m definitely not proficient myself but I’ve also seen people use the clutch and leave the “small shifter” in high or 4th when they shift the main box and then quickly shift the auxiliary back to 1st or 2nd depending on which exact twin stick they have (usually 2nd but I think an “18 speed” 5+4 tells you to use lo lo in all 5 gears but skip lo and direct in 5th) Otherwise without the clutch they have to be quick shifting this way or it’ll definitely stall where double neutral like you said takes a lot more practice to get right neutral in the auxiliary shift the main drop the auxiliary into 2nd or whatever gear is appropriate before the truck stops moving. Edit: also when looking at the exact gear ratios of various twin stick combinations it’s clear that you have to skip some of them so that whether it’s the 6+4 where you might stop splitting gears around 4th or 5th or the “18 speed” quadruplex or the “20 speed” quadruplex or the ratios in sequence if you used all of them in order would include stuff like shifting first to second in the main before shifting back to first in the main and second in the auxiliary and possibly even from 2nd and 4th to 4th and 1st to 3rd and 2nd to 5th and 1st to 3rd and 3rd if you used all 20 gears in a “20 speed.” Nobody has time for that so you’d have those different combinations to shift maybe 2nd and 4th to 4th and 1st to 3rd and 2nd to 5th and 1st to 3rd and 3rd but you’d probably shift in a way that the main transmission is always progressing skipping the lower end of the auxiliary when it’d put you in a lower gear. You might have 24 gear shifter locations resulting in 23 ratios in a 6+4 or you might have 20 positions with 18 ratios or 20 ratios but you’d probably do better if you used between 12 and 14 gears only going forward. You might use all 16 in a 4+4 spicer, but I haven’t looked, though it seems like an accident waiting to happen if you tried to shift in sequence every gear ratio in a TRQ-720 20 speed quadruplex and with the TRQ-7220 18 speed you’d most likely shift all 4 in the auxiliary in 1st, the last three in the auxiliary for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and just leave the auxiliary in 4th as you drop to main into 5th (3rd and 4th in the auxiliary for the 20 speed). Much like you could get to 4th and 3rd in a 6+4 following the same sequence 1+1, 1+2, 1+3, 1+4, 2+2, 2+3, etc but once in 4+3 you could leave the auxiliary in 3rd and shift 5th and 6th before putting the auxiliary in 4th or you could use only 2nd and 3rd in the auxiliary outside of 1st and 6th and still ignore the auxiliary from 4th to 5th to 6th. Just because they have 18, 20, or 24 gear ratios that doesn’t mean you’d ever safely be able to use them all or remember the exact sequence to even try to use them all. This was changed a bit when they switched to the 14, 16, and 20 speed single stick spicers that had 2 splits for off road and 2 splits for highway use and even more so with something like the 18 speed Eaton Fuller RTO single stick splitter+range selector transmissions where they are actually 5 speeds with a low range reduction resulting in 9 useful ratios and a splitter to turn 9 ratios into 18. No overlap and they are all sequential like 4high is directly before 5low which is directly below 5high. Less confusing to use all 18. And the 20 speed spicer 4 way air splitter ones still had the overlap problem so you’d have 10 off-road gears or 12 gears recommended for highway use as you could use all four splits in 1st.

You tripped the emergency stop. It's a spring loaded flap that trips and covers the intake of the blower. It should have shut the engine down, but it might have not closed tightly. It was to shut the engine down if it ran away. They were also popular in oil and gas work where the intake could suck in flammable vapors, causing a runaway

@@Only4Trucks Yeah, Detroits can run away if the shaft seals in the blower get really leaky. Even when they are brand new they leak a little bit. There will be little tubes coming out the side of the block right above the oil pan. They are the air box drains and will always dribble a bit.of oil. That emergency stop is there because of that

For your 4 spd aux you won't use every gear after the first set in 1 on the main for 2 and 3 on the main you should really only need 2,3,4 on the aux after that 4 and 5 on the main you should really only need 3,4 on the aux. Keep in mind some gears will over lap meaning example 2 and 4 is the same as 3 and 1 so instead go 3 and 2 otherwise it would really be a down shift. If that makes any sense.

Ive driven several trucks with the 5 and 4, some of the older trucks the 5 speed could have different shift patterns and some of the 4 speeds were different as well. Mostly it depended if it was over drive, or direct drive. I think that one has both over drive transmissions. Just a guess from watching you shift.

If that is indeed the 6+4 I think that the gears are very close together in 4th, 5th and 6th like you can leave the auxiliary in 2nd or 3rd the whole time you shift 4,5,6 and then shift the auxiliary the rest of the way. Like 1st and 1st, 1st and 2nd, 1st and 3rd, 1st and 4th, 2nd and 2nd, 2nd and 3rd, 2nd and 4th, 3rd and 2nd, 3rd and 3rd, 3rd and 4th, 4th and 2nd, 4th and 3rd, 5th and 3rd, 6th and 3rd, 6th and 4th. OR from 4th and 2nd shift 5th and 2nd then 6th and 2nd then 6th and 3rd, 6th and 4th. But the shift pattern sounds different where instead of the left 4 being reverse, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, with 4th next to 3rd and 6th next to 4th and 5th to the back behind 6th it sounds like yours has reverse in the 5th hole and 1st in the reverse hole. I’m definitely not an expert but that’s what a lot of the shift diagrams show and you only wind up using 15 of the gears because 4th and 3rd is the same gear ratio as 5th and 2nd hence the 4th and 3rd to 5th and 3rd or 4th and 2nd to 5th and 2nd. And from there 6th and 1st, 4th and 4th and 5th and 3rd are all not exactly the same but they are very nearly the same ratio like 1.0416:1, 1.0044:1, and 1:1 in that order. 6th and 3rd is 0.84:1 and 5th and 4th is 0.81:1 and then 6th and 4th is 0.68:1. You definitely should not shift from 0.81:1 to 1.0416:1 to 0.84:1 to 0.68:1 or from 1.24:1 to 1.0044:1 back to 1.24:1 either. I might be dead wrong though. I just think based on the video and the online resources that your gear ratios are such that you start in 1st in both transmissions (11.9:1) then shift your auxiliary all the way to 4th (6.07:1) then you shift to 2nd in both transmissions (5.06:1) then shift the auxiliary 3rd and 4th (3.3:1) then shift to 3rd in the main and 2nd in the auxiliary (2.8:1) then again 3rd and 4th in the auxiliary (2.24:1) then 4th and 2nd (1.54:1) then 4th and 3rd (1.24:1) then 5th and 3rd (1:1) then 6th and 3rd (0.84:1) then 6th and 4th if you’re traveling faster than 60-65 mph (0.68:1). I didn’t list off all of the ratios and there are really 23 different ratios so you don’t have to shift exactly this way (you could, for instance shift from 3rd both boxes to 4th and 1st and shift the main from there or once in 4th and 2nd shift the main from there or even shift the auxiliary all the way to overdrive in 4th before shifting 5th and 6th in the main.) and however you do it you’ll only use about 15 of the 23 different ratios and whatever is easiest would make the most sense. If your exact transmission has different ratios then just ignore everything I said but I’d start there since, as you said, the gears are all practically right on top of each other once you hit 4th gear.

Oh you gotta put the hood on it. Don't make it a rat truck. The chrome luberfiners would be good. It's a 5x4. It doesn't have a turbo. It's a roots blower. I would love to get into that and mix up some gears. I didn't catch the year of it but it looks like a 65. I learned to drive in one like that but with a cummins and a 5x4

I’m sure you know by now but the cable you pulled in the beginning is an emergency shut off. Obviously Diesel engines have been know to “run away” and there was a greater chance of it happening with the old 2 stroke Detroit’s. You pull that cable and it’s attached to a flap in the blower the will close to shut off air which will kill the motor in an emergency situation.

I had a 78/79 freightliner flc dump truck with a 6v92ta and 5 + 4 Transmissions and empty I drove it with the 5 speed well 3rd in the 4 speed from a dead stop but shift to 4th once rolling then shift the 5 speed. Loaded I would need other gears and drive how you would but empty I would cheat it

Not to get too personal but what’s an average cost to put insurance on an older single axle truck for taking to truck shows- not for hire? Appreciate recommendations

Not entirely sure but somewhere between 200 and 1200$ a year depending on where your from and the truck. But also an antique tagged truck can be driven by someone without a CDL! Atleast in Pennsylvania!

That's not a turbo, it's the supercharger. Sounds like he pulled the emergency stop. My dad had a GMC Brigadier with a turbo charged version of the 6-71. Still haf the super charger and was called the 6-71T. 275 HP vs 238 HP. That E stop is just a cable controled gate that shuts off the air supply

The transmission has square gears, shit @ 900, 5 gears main transmission, 4 gears auxiliary to split the main, auxiliary is at the rear ends, 1st and 1st. bull low. Both are H patterns. It is better to shift without the clutch. Down shifting don't take your foot off accelerator, it wil go up to 900 rpm.
