Bears have been my nemesis for 55 years throughout the mountains and forests of Northern California, Oregon, Nevada, etc... From eating/destroying everything they can reach, to throwing parties in my pool or my hot tub while I'm at work, to finding them over wintering under my buildings during 50ft winters, to being the first to have one pop out after the spring thaw and say "Howdy!", to them, to breaking into my RV's and hanging out after they have tasted every color of every item inside of them, to their creation of multiple "Wallows" which they make by tearing out the pipes and irrigation lines in my landscaping and making a mess of everything, and so on.... Such are the ways of Ursus Americanus, may they all go bald and get sunburns on their butts.....😕😎

Okay, the Bob cat definitely heard the camera. Besides the bears' incredible sense of smell, yes, you leave your scent wherever you go, as I'm sure you know. They target where you left the most scent. 😊😊😊

from Canada, I've never owned a trail camera. Here I am at 77 years and thinking maybe the camera makes a sound the bears hear when the light comes on, and that's what pi-ses them off. just a thought. still watching each and every one, if I was a drinker, be a good time to have a drink and relax, and I am good at the relaxing thing.....take care.

To be fair to the bears, for once, I think if i were a bear id take a little offense as well too some old guy creeping through the trees and putting up cameras around my favorite spot to take a mud bath :/ How would you feel Wilson if I were to put a few cameras up about your cabin and pool ! Just to see what you were getting up to in the pool :) I guess the bears will have to adjust to this Surveillance Society we live in. :D

When an animal rolls in mud, it is usually to remove/protect itself against parasites/lice/fleas from/in the fur. I guess it also applies to bears in North America.

A black bear was shot in eastern Ontario a few years back… it had over 400 ticks on it! Either the bear didn’t wallow or the ticks are wallow resistant.

The cameras are likely making a sound the bears can hear. In the 80s, the computer class teacher asked me to stop by at the end of the school day to turn off any computer monitors that were still on. My friends used to make a scene out of me being able to walk up to any that were still on. They likely think it's an insect and are looking for a treat

They do not seem to attack the camera at night, my guess is that it not a smell issue or IR led light. I wonder what sort of vision bears have ? I have been told that deer hunters could wear bright clothing and the animals would not notice because of their vision system. It seems the case that hunters shoot each other because they are camouflaged and it works for human vision. just asking ? all the best

The camera problem and the mud-wallow question are separate issues. But consider that some nocturnal creatures can see infra-red. If the wallow is actually a scent trap, and if the bear can see infra-red and has enough intelligence then it is possible that the bear understands that the camera is subverting his trap and is purposely upsetting the cameras. Wait. Do you have proof that the bear is creating the wallow? As far as the idea that the mud is used as an insect repellant, the bear is NOT covered in mud and usually avoids even walking on the mud, but he does do a lot of sniffing in and around the area.

Those are just some very shy bears. They don't want their toilet habits broadcast all over the internet. How would you like it if the bears took video of you showering in the altogether and then broadcast it all over on Bare TV? Yeah. Ever since Goldilocks, bears do not trust humans. And I can't blame them for that.
