"You don't just buy leather, you buy the right leather". Fascinating half hour. Very enlightening. Had never considered the role of imperfections, or that different body parts would yield different leathers. Please Dom, seek out more of these special craftspeople and give them the publicity they deserve (and more fascinating content for your subscribers).

As a child, our neighbor hired me to skive and join leather strips for his business. I learned basic leather tooling from him but couldn't afford a set of stamps, so I filed my own from the heads of 20 penny nails. Seeders, leaves, basket weaves... I copied most of Al's fancy store bought tools and went on to make loads of leather items from scraps he gave me. Learning to stitch and lace enabled me to make some pretty professional looking things at just 12 YO... Spent the next 50 years working with my hands and loved it...

As Steve rolled out that leather hide @9:35, I was wisked back to my youth at Camp Palmetto Boy Scout summer camp in the mountains of the North Carolina (US) and could actually smell (in my mind) the rich, earthy smell of a genuine leather hide. Great memories.

Wow Amazing!! Steve, like yourself Dom, is an absolute legend. It's refreshing to see a craftsman willing to share his knowledge and experience with the younger generation in order to keep these trades alive, it's one of the reasons why I'm a self confessed "Repair Shop" addict and love watching you restore cars, motorbikes and all and sundry that come thru the RS doors. Keep up the great work Dom and please pass on my appreciation to the RS crew. All the best from New Zealand.

I completely agree with the idea of embracing imperfections in natural materials. I make furniture and I try, customer allowing, to use the timber some fine furniture makers would discount for its flaws, knots and burrs. I think it’s these imperfections are where the true beauty of nature is. Martin

Having worked leather (on & off) for 50 years or so, & edited a magazine for the ANZL (Association of New Zealand Leatherworkers) using an Amiga 1000 and dot matrix printer, (creating one page at a time in graphics mode), I was pleased to see your visit to Nelson & Forge, AND to see a barista next door (my other passion, as you know) = blown away. I’m again encouraged to get back into creating, and have started learning airbrushing! Keep up the good work; we always look forward to watching The Repair Shop on Friday evenings (here in New Zealand) and your videos every Monday morning. Now all we need is Make it to Market to air here!

If I had the money to travel, I would love to go to the repair shop and spend time seeing all of you. Thanks again for sharing. P.s. the comments about Suzy are so immature. Hi dom I have been a follower of the repair shop since since it began and enjoyed it so much and started following you as I am a classic car fanatic for years. I found the ranalah quite interesting to start with but now it has become quite boring. I look forward to your Sunday video on KZbin with laughing John but watched it tonight and can't believe it keyring in the leather industry. You seem to be just promoting your own thing now. If we can't see that porsche finished you've lost a viewer. Why would I want a ranalah keyring or a sticker? Come on dom get back to the real world!

Second, it's cleared a mental block I have had about how to attach a leather strap (read 'belts from Primark') to the carrying case for my telescope. Just two semicircular cutouts on opposite sides.. so simple, yet so effective!!! Should you decide to restock, I will certainly be buying. 👍 Extra bonus - the keyrings also look splendid. 💚🐇🐴💚

I have been a hobby leatherworker since about 2017. I would always buy small sections of ready-cut leather which I could piece together to make items. I recently purchased a side of leather which was imported because I really have not found any UK leather business. I thought there was just no domestic demand or suppliers! I thought it was all USA or European. I am enlightened. I would love to help develop use of locally sourced leather especially hearing we incinerate so much, what a waste!
