I'm upper intermediate so I had to put the video in 2x speed. The reason why I had to leave a comment is bc of what you said about listening being more important than speaking. I started learning Spanish with the pressure of speaking as soon as possible as a lot of teachers advise to do so, too. Didn't work for me. I've been learning for a year now and i could count in my fingers the number of times I spoke with natives (most of them didn't even last for 10 mins). I listened to this story twice the normal speed and understood it without any issues whatsoever. This is my advice to beginners. Don't get pressured of speaking in Spanish when you don't even have a good grasp of the language yet. It just won't work. COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT is the key (search what it means, you'll need it). Just like what maestro said in the beginning; hablar no sirve nada si no puedes entender lo que escuhas. Y'all are lucky to have found this channel. Hope I found it sooner. And good luck to our language learning journey!🎉❤

My teacher also told me too, speaking speaking and to memorize the conjugation which makes it hard for us. I wanted to learn but I don't want to memorize it, I am more of understanding it. When I tried auditiva test, I had a hard time and so my compañeros.

I've been studying since March, completed half of Duolingo, all of Babbel, and took 4 years of it in highschool. I only understood part of it like boys, small, garden, and the rest from photos. I'm struggling hard with this, and cannot relate to people pick it up at all. I've spent hours studying everyday recently and haven't given up, but it's probably the task with the most effort and least reward that I have ever taken part in. Kudos to those who do it.

This is the first time I have become aware of transcribing and boy…… is it good! It REALLY makes me listen. I am listening to Part 1 three times and during each time I am scribbling down what I think I hear in my notebook and pausing the video many times…….i feel listening 3 times is enough for me as it is very time consuming and I feel I’ve nearly written down everything said. Then I move to Part 2 and repeat this exercise. Work in progress! So just want to say what a great tool to learn. I love trying all the tools in my tool box and this is a new tool I have found! Muchas Gracias 🙏

I could understand almost all of it. I first slowed down the speed because I couldnt keep up to write. But then I picked up the speed and just kept rewinding until I got it. Ive been working on Spanish for years aprendiendo en la calle cuando viajando. Man did my ego think I knew a bunch! But every time I return to Latin America I realize how much I don't know. Particularly with comprehension. I'm at an intermediate level and can speak enough to express damn near anything I want to say. But comprehending, especially fast spanish, is still suuuuuper tough! And more and more am I realizing suuuuuuper important. When I'm travelling in places with no English(which I always aim for) I always say immediately when I can't understand: Por favor hablas más despacio conmigo, mi espanol no es muy bueno, pero estoy tratando de aprender. I do it with a smile and I have a good attitude. And I have a good time. More often than not, native speakers are helpful and patient and I learn a lot in the immersion itself. I always keep a notebook with me and write down many of things I didn't know how to say or that I didn't understand but managed to figure out... I study it later... Just have fun with it and be patient with your self! Thanks so much Spanish input for this channel I just discovered. Ive explored many and yours is one of my fast favorites that I immediately subscribed to. :)

1.5+ year of practice here, my Spanish reading skill is fairly high in the intermediate level where I don't need much English translation in the story, but I am struggling with listen comprehsion. This video humbles me and I couldn't get a grasp of the words that I understand in reading but not listening. This tells me I need to listen way more than reading and speaking.. Your concept is so on point! In real life, the learner should be doing most of the listening for conversational or such

Just a question please :-) I thought in the last part of the story, at 12:06 minutes, that it should have been "Cuando la gente pasó por ahí, vio (not vieron) al gigante jugando con los niños". Because "gente" is singular.
@spanishinput Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the super interesting question. As you can see in this page on one of RAE's websites, when using "gente" it is acceptable to switch from singular to plural when moving to a new sentence. Both in the example provided by RAE and in my story both sentences are actually not separated by a period: www.fundeu.es/noticia/hablemos-del-idioma-ay-la-concordancia/

Do you think there's an optimal combination of extensive listening/watching comprehensible input and this intensive method? I've made a lot of progress in my comprehension by solely listening, but I recognise that I do miss some details. By devoting time to extensive listening you cover more content but will miss some detail. What sort of mix in terms of time would you recommend?
@spanishinput Жыл бұрын
Hi! This exercise requires lots of energy, but you'll a lot more out of it than from "just listening". I've only done this for hours a day when I've been preparing for an exam, learning minimal pairs of a language or when I want to get my ears more attuned to a particular TV show. The rest of the time I "just listen". So IMHO, you should be doing more extensive than intensive listening. Just don't fool yourself into thinking that "background listening" while you do other things is nearly as effective as sitting down and paying attention.

@spanishinput Жыл бұрын
¡Hola! Input is just one part of what you need. You also need to study phonetics, phonology, grammar and train your ears with different dialects. It's impossible to give a time estimate because an hour of "just watch and listen" is not the same as an hour of "intensive, focused listening while transcribing".
