This is such a great concept. As a jazz musician, my best learning took place 50 years ago when I started studying saxophone. I dropped the needle on my LP'S over and over and over again. Hundreds of times, transcribing onto manuscript paper. The music stayed with me. The students who just read transcriptions do not end up synthesizing the jazz style, and their ears don't develop. Your ideas are fantastic! Makes sense
@spanishinput Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, every time I search for transcription ear training most results are about jazz. On chinese-forums and Language learner's forums users are also familiar with transcription and recommend it, but almost nobody talks about it on KZbin because viewers tend to look for "easy" ways to learn.

I am finding this frustratingly difficult, while at the same time it feels powerful. It really highlights holes in my learning, which I appreciate. For example, 'Ha' o 'a' or 'habiA,' very similar sounding in the flow of the story-- I get the story easily, but the specific words, which will lead to a much more clear understanding, are still difficult at times

When I first discovered this website, I was recovering from eye surgery, and I could watch videos and read okay, but my eyes were not permitting me to do transcription. In fact I have always been a horrible note taker, and a hunt and peck typist. This story of the most beautiful woman had me intrigued, but it was beyond my comprehension. A couple weeks ago I returned to discover the Anki card decks, and I started the deck for this story. What a difference! The cards have really been helping my comprehension, and every day I study the cards and then watch the video to monitor my progress. And every day I can't wait to see what happens next in the story. I highly recommend the Anki cards.

Thank you for doing this. I joined. As a person who has jumped around to all kinds of different methods, I think this is the best. Focusing content on the list of 5000 most commonly used words gives me a specific goal to reach for. I also like the way you get right into it and force us to listen immediately in Spanish without cluttering the process with an endless switch between Spanish and explaining things in English. Apps are notorious for doing that as well as wasting time on picking words to complete sentences and other useless exercises. I read, I listen, I read, I read as I listen, and slowly but surely, I know I’m acquiring the ability to understand the most important vocabulary in a repetitive, natural, yet systematic way. I highly recommend this to others who have been frustrated trying to learn forever without really knowing where they are going. Thanks again.

Anthony, don't lose faith. I almost gave up at one point too. I just figured that I was never going to get over that hurdle. It seemed like I was stuck and thought that it was going to be impossible to get any better. After years of thinking that that was it, I decided to try again and it just started to click. My "in" was reading. Someone offered me the first Harry Potter book in Spanish. I had never read the series in English. I thought, well I'll try it. I ended up reading the whole series during covid lockdown in Spanish. I read aloud the words as I cruised along not worrying about every single detail. AND boy was it fun!!! It improved my comprehension of spoken language immensely. Suddenly, I was understanding so much more than I had in the past. I try to squeeze in different types of practice methods without being too judgmental with myself. I think that the key is to find the fun in it. I like to listen to Spanish language radio in the morning as I am getting ready for work, for example. It's fun. Anyway.................que tenga buena suerte y siga!

Is it important to remember the words or just the scope of the sentence. For me, as a dutch person sentences like 'vi un auto negro que llamo mi attencion' is easy to understand and remember. Same with 'estaba caminando par la calle'. But a sentence like 'esperando ver ese auto otra vez' are somehow difficult to remember. I do understand what it says, but the words don't feel logic. Do you have any suggestion how to tackle this?
@spanishinput Жыл бұрын
Hi. Sure. Repetition. As Bruce Lee said, "I don't fear the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once. I fear the man who has practiced the same kick 10,000 times." I've memorized tons of English songs that had some parts that made no sense when I memorized them, but with time I've come to understand those parts.

I really like the transcription method and find it very helpful. This is the fourth video that I've transcribed and I'm seeing improvement. Thanks so much for creating this content for us. However, I think that there are a few errors: 08:49 Cuanto terminé mi café. I think the video actually said "Cuando". 11:29 ¿Quizás yo soy solo su plan B? It actually says "solo soy". 13:44 ¿Es este el misterio de Ana María? Try as I might, I'm unable to hear the "de". Is it there?
@spanishinput Жыл бұрын
Wow, I am super impressed with how well you did the exercise! Congratulations! Yes, the first two are errors in the subtitles. I've just corrected them. Thanks a lot! The third one is actually a super soft /d/. As I explained in another video, the Spanish /d/ can be very soft when between vowels, and in this case it's so soft it's almost completely gone. But I've just checked and yes, I can hear a very faint /d/. The /e/ next to it is super clear. If we assume the /d/ is so soft it's gone, we could transcribe this phonetically as [mis'te.ɾjo e 'a.na ma'ɾi.a]. You will encounter super soft, almost gone /d/'s in many, many Spanish accents.

Why was the preterite for tener "tuve" used when talking about the cat instead of "tenía"? You presume that someone owned a pet for several years. But even if the cat dies, like when a person dies and you use the imperfect when speaking about their name, I would think the imperfect would be used talking about having a cat. Thanks!
@spanishinput Жыл бұрын
Hola. "Tuve" in this case could be translated as "I had", while "tenía" could be translated as "I used to have". "I had a cat years ago" is more natural than "I used to have a cat years ago". At least in Spanish. Fun fact: When giving funeral speeches we prefer to use the preterite instead of the imperfect when talking about the deceased person. BTW, this part of the story was personal: I did have a white cat for 15 years.

Hay mas chicas guapas en el mundo que mujeres con las que te gustaría casarte. Es como la diferencia entre escuchar una historia y estudiar las palabras.
