Not sure it’s the first, because I’ve definitely heard it discussed. Maybe the one I heard was focused on English connected speech, for those learning English. But I’m pretty sure this happens in all languages. And even though your’s might not be “the first”, I’m positive that it’s the best and most thorough!! Thank you for doing this!!

I'm pretty sure that Duolingo uses connected language in fast spoken examples and "staccato pronunciation" in slow mode. You are exposed to connected language and familiarize yourself with the sound of actual spoken Spanish, but it's never explained explicitly, and I haven't heard or seen a systematic overview like this. This is really helpful!

So it's basically like italian... that's probably one of the reasons why we are great at understanding each other. Not only grammar and phonetics are similar but our brain identifies and separates syllables correctly without thinking about it because we connect them with the same rules. Nice!

El problema no es que los gringos nos quieran ayudar, sino que nunca les parece bien el inglés que hablan los extranjeros. Un extranjero habla mal español y aquí intentamos entenderlo y encima le damos ánimos para que siga aprendiendo porque nos alegra ver cuándo un extranjero se esfuerza por aprender español. La diferencia es que cuando un extranjero habla inglés siempre viene el típico que dice que no te entiendo porque tienes un hard accent, cuando llevas hablando con 20 antes que él y te han entendido perfectamente. Y, por supuesto, como se te note el acento extranjero apaga y vámonos. A los angloparlantes nunca les parece suficiente, pretenden que tengamos un acento nativo y no entienden que es imposible volver q nacer...

Eso es lo poco que hay de información sobre la pronunciación de español. Y todo lo demás que describes, no niego. Pero también cuéntame ¿cuántas personas extranjeras ya viven en Gringolandia? ¿Cuántos gringos viven en América Latina? Entiendo que eres un soñador y soy muy realista. Entiendo que odias lo que estoy implicando, pero así es el mundo. Tal vez si un país latino encontrará una forma de encontrar estabilidad, prosperidad y quitar la corrupción de la sociedad y con eso el centro de poder se mudará a ese país. Y te lo juro que cuando eso pase, esos latinos van a hacerlo mismo con los extranjeros que quieren aprovechar la oportunidades que ese país ofrece. Podemos ver eso con lo que pasa con los venezolanos ahora. No veo muchos latinos en Colombia, Perú, Ecuador y Chile emocionados cuando escuchan un acento venezolano. Totally agree, this video was so awesome! To my ears it has always sounded like natives would pronounce "de" just as "e", this is the first video I have ever seen that explained how the pronunciation of "de" can change. Learning that "En Mexico" is more naturally pronounced as "E m'Mexico" was totally new to me. This single video probably unlocked an entire new level of listening comprehension and better speaking.

Porque no existe, cada palabra en español debe ser perfectamente pronunciada. Cada uno de los ejemplos que dio es simple y sencillamente de gente que arrastra las palabras y no habla correctamente. Y seamos sinceros, nadie habla del todo bien, no se nos inculca en la escuela, en las clases de español la forma correcta de hablar Como que ya es algo inherente, a no ser que vayas a una escuela de actuación, como los maestros de doblaje.

Esto del enlace de palabras es totalmente natural y normal, no es incorrecto. Los rioplatenses producen una /s/aspirada, por lo que no sería «perfectamente» pronunciado para tu concepto, pero es la norma y lo esperado en esa zona. Se enseña de esa forma en las escuelas, en los liceos, se habla así en el trabajo.

gracias!!! when i first started learning, every spanish speaker prides on the fact that words sound exactly how they are written. While this is the case for individual words, i quickly learned spanish sentences/phrases often do not sound how i think they would sound especially when spoken fast. this topic is rarely addressed in youtube, and this is by far the most comprehensive video ive seen. Another issue is not only is this topic rarely addressed, but spanish teachers often talk very slow and students cant practice hearing how words connect even if they know the rules/tendencies. Could you make a follow up video where you speak faster to emphasize these pronunciation tendencies? it would be incredibly useful for listening comprehension Edit: just realized a lot of your videos already contains connected sentences, how convenient lol

Would you consider doing a live group class under members or special classes under your website with reading scripts of conversations where we can participate with you correcting the pronunciation? One on one classes are ideal, but group classes are more affordable. This is what I’m talking about! I’ve always found Spanish spelling to be easy because it’s similar to my own language, Indonesian, but that was just my initial impression. I got so confused about by things like this “connected speech” because it makes words look like they’re smushed together. It’s so easy to find info on French _liaison_ but you’re the first one who brought this up for Spanish 👍 Maybe next you can also talk about how sometimes the final S are not pronounced? Hi! That's called "S-aspiration" and I already have a video about that. I think it's called "Why do Spanish speakers pronounce S as H?" I might do an updated version with real examples from different countries. S-Aspiration is more common than most people realize.

- More and less, Spanish also beared the similarities with French which is connected speech (because both linking the words when speak, despite Spanish more to phonological orthography and French more to etymological orthography). - Stressed syllables as long vowels also as traits of Rioplatense Spanish due the Italian intonations and Serbo-Croatian (but with pitch accent) due having much homonym words to differentiate in speech because the long and short vowels play the noticeable meanings in one word, also when listening the Serbo-Croatian songs like turbofolk genre some words tend to be pronounced longer by singers.

Oh my gosh, thank you for explaining this! I have never understood why I could understand people sometimes but not others. I used to live in a Spanish speaking neighborhood (but people were from everywhere) and I figured I could maybe just understand some regions' accents better than others, but I'm pretty sure this is what was actually happening. Soy dominicano y los dominicanos tenemos un master degree en lo que este video explica uniendo palabras, frases ❤😂. Hemos evolucionado tanto el idioma que hemos ido desapareciendo las vocales, y las consonante (s). Ejemplo: ‘ta bien = Está bien, ta’ qui = está aquí. 😅. Igual en el inglés americano pasa lo mismo.

En mi zona, soy del Pirineo Navarro, conectamos bastante poco, la verdad. Pronunciamos practicamente cada silaba. En "Que es esto", no ligamos, pero tampoco cortamos en seco. "Que" y "es" quedan separados, mientras que "es" y "esto", se unen alargando la S.😊 Que essesto. mas o menos. De cualquier forma, francamente interesante tu video.

00:07 Pero es que conectar las palabras no es algo exclusivo del español, de hecho es bastante común en muchos idiomas, por ejemplo el francés y el inglés, entre muchos otros. En francés hay dos fenómenos: l'enchaînement y la liaison. En inglés no se si existe nombre para el fenómeno pero es imprescindible aprenderlo para sonar como nativo.

El español es mi lengua materna, hace poco, en un video, escuche a un señor norteamericano hablando español, dijo con el típico acento: "Yo. tambien. hablo. español" Lo repetí para ver por que se le oye tan diferente, yo dije "yo tambie nablwespañol" por lo menos en mi acento, la O de "hablo" cambia a una w (o algo asi) En tu ejemplo "con nadie" yo lo diría "kong nadie" 🤣 no con'nadie, sino, coŋ nadie. No tiene nada que ver. La escritura inglesa no es fonética. La española sí lo es pero, como en todos los idiomas, no se hacen pausas entre palabras normalmente dentro de una frase. No tiene nada de misterioso, lo misterioso sería que metiéramos pausas entre palabras. Es verdad que algunos idiomas como el alemán meten una oclusión glótica si la siguiente palabra empieza por vocal, pero la fusión entre palabras al hablar a velocidad normal es lo más habitual del mundo.

El connected speech que da pie al ritmo de cada lengua es una parte medular en el proceso de dominio de una segunda lengua. Del español al inglés es lo mismo, e inclusive con mayor presencia. En el español se separan más las palabras que en el inglés, o bien en el inglés los hablantes nativos las unen más, mucho más. Por eso es que a muchos hispanohablantes se les dificulta entender el inglés cuando se habla rápido. Un ejemplo: Where do you want to go? Un hispanohablante aprendiz de inglés pronunciaría wer du yu guant tu gou. Un hablante nativo de inglés dice: wer d'ye wanagou. En el inglés la mayoría de los monosílabos se integran entre ellos o con las palabras que llevan dos o más sílabas. El español es más pausado que el inglés. Para concluir, conozco a una maestra de español para extranjeros, y lo que más se les dificulta a sus estudiantes es la pronunciación de las vocales abiertas y las consonantes marcadas. En el inglés, del cual imparto clases, lo difícil son las vocales cerradas y las consonantes suaves. Sí, contrario a lo que comúnmente se piensa el inglés se pronuncia más suave que el español. Es un error muy común de los hispanohablantes aprendices de inglés el marcar en demasía las consonantes, especialmente cuando hay clústers.

You make a very astute observation. I am a native American English speaker and I am working abroad. I have noticed that my speech is difficult to understand by non- native english speakers. American english has morphed into another tongue where the words are very ‘blurry’. And people have horrible enunciation. They make little effort to be understood, often. I am making efforts to improve my diction and slow down when speaking.

Hi. I mean the duration of the final consonant. We don't really talk about "geminated consonants" in Spanish, just merged consonants with different durations. When we merge two consonants, nasals are the ones with the longest duration, then Ls, then everything else.

¡Por fin alguien explica la esencia de un idioma! Un idioma es continuidad. Un idioma es una cosa HABLADA (la escritura existe hace 5000 mil años, el idioma al menos 50.000). Hasta hace no mucho tiempo, la gente sabía hablar pero no escribir (y no hablo de varios siglos, sino en muchos casos, décadas). Cuando uno aprende a escribir es cuando empieza a diferenciar las sílabas (por otro lado una cosa arbitraria, por ejemplo. asimismo, aunque). Enseñar que el idioma es esto: una melodía, una armonía, una cadencia; esa es la mejor forma de enseñarlo. Creo que incluso no solo se aplica al español. En inglés hay muchas elipsis y contracciones (y palabras que se pronuncian como dos y se escriben como una; mainstream, por ejemplo). Eso es muy también común en lenguas germánicas (en alemán se juntan muchas palabras, como sabrás). Pero volviendo al tema, me parece formidable este acercamiento. Faltaría sí el tema de las sílabas suprimidas al principio de la oración «'ta bien?» o al final «vamo’ arriba» pero esta lección es esencial incluso para los hablantes del español y -entiendo -aplicable a todos los idiomas (de hecho tengo una teoría personal de que el latín no se habla como los pronuncian los profesores, o incluso los curas, sino que realmente debía sonar distinto, porque debía suceder algo parecido a lo del español o al italiano). Pero bueno, sin más, lo felicito por este video. Es de gran ayuda para uno -y para otros-.

Y voy a agregar otra cosa porque creo que esto es importante para que se entienda lo que este señor está explicando en el vídeo. Hace no mucho tiempo el reconocimiento de voz a nivel informático era un tema muy difícil y la mayoría de softwares en diferentes idiomas tenían bastantes errores en la comprensión y en el descifrado de las palabras. Y recién ahora, los últimos dos o tres años que empezó a implementarse la inteligencia artificial, se permite que exista esta especie de reconocimiento de voz casi sin errores que se da actualmente. Y esto se da porque las inteligencias artificiales no solamente detectan los sonidos, sino que pueden saltar un nivel más alto, a un nivel semántico, a un nivel conceptual, vectorizando los conceptos matemáticamente y entonces ahí pueden descifrar mejor el idioma. Por eso esto que está diciendo este señor es esencial no solamente para la lingüística, sino en este caso también para una ciencia aplicada -la informática- y más específicamente las inteligencias artificiales que emulan las inteligencias naturales. @@spanishinput Sí, el concepto de palabra es relativo. Normalmente se trabaja mucho con raíces en lingüística. Raíz, sufijo, prefijo. Y entiendo (si no me equivoco) que lo mismo sucede con la “tokenización” al procesar los textos con “Lange Language Models”.

@@spanishinput No probé Premiere, sí probé con una aplicación que se llama Aiko en IOS y otra denominada WhisperMac en MacOS. También noté que el dictado nativo del sistema (por ejemplo, al momento de pedirle a Siri o redactar una nota) ha mejorado mucho en los sistemas de Apple. A mí me sirve muchísimo porque hablo en español rioplatense, en el cual era imposible conseguir resultados eficientes al momento de una desgrabación. Le agradezco muchísimo sus contestaciones.
