Well, learning to paint like a pro that is really bad at painting. Like, I guess they're not a "pro" in the complimentary way, but maybe still like a "pro" as in professional. I don't know why they would still have a job though if they're bad. Maybe they're self-employed? Or maybe they're blackmailing their employer into letting them keep their job. Either way, I'm painting like them. I'm painting badly.

your progress learning how to paint is really awesome. Those small dots you can see in some of your Coats (that orange peel stuff) is actually Silicone and grease from you and the air, you should use a tent or at least cover the floor and use a Painter suit.

some tips for painting 1. water down the floor: this will keep dust from drifting onto your parts and make the paint last longer and get better adhesion 2. even through it is plastic, sand down your parts after the first primer is put down. even if the company says you don't have to you should still do it. this will give you a smoother finish and you guessed it, better adhesion and longer lasting paint. 3. after your first layer of paint you should get some super fine sandpaper and give it a good rubdown. this will take out any more finer imperfections and give a nice rough surface for the future layers to adhere too and a smoother looking finish 4. cover the parts when youre not painting. building a small tent or put a box over them. this will prevent dust or other trash from falling on the panels or parts. the name of the game is super fine scratches at the beginning and smooth finish at the end. this will let the paint last longer and look better. also i suggest wiping down the pieces with 91% rubbing alcohol. it evaporates quick enough you dont have to worry about it damaging fiberglass or plastic but it will still remove oils and other contaminates from the surface.

I painted for my first time ever also a week ago. I bought the Husky Dual gun kit (hvlp and standa5) Which is actually pretty nice for about a hundred bucks. I used a primer coat, basecoat, and clearcoat ..so not a single stage. It actually turned out pretty decent. Most of it's in the prep. Gun set up... and then run with it.

Don Hertzfeldt once said, "The only thing that matters is what actually winds up on the big screen, not how you got it there. You could make a cartoon in crayons about a red square that falls in unrequited love with a blue circle, and there wouldn’t be a dry eye in the house if you know how to tell a story." I never thought that I'd ever be caught up in a saga about a revitalized and resurrected Fiero, but here I am. You're a great storyteller.

Ron, this might help. When my brother was getting ready to spray he'd do a quick blast at the floor in the area he would be painting. He did this to tack down any dust that got missed when prepping the room to advert any possibility of kicking up airborne particles that might land on the work. (This may be what caused the anomalies on your work) This was not like painting the floor, he'd shoot it from standing height. At the same time he'd do a final glance at the spray pattern and volume from the gun. Then quickly set out the pieces to be painted. Same thing if your painting a whole car, just cover the car before you put some quick blasts at the floor.

It's just a thought - not actually a tip having never tried it, but it might have been a good idea to try to set the new faux windows out in the sun on a hot day on their new spots held down with clamps to see if they heat form at all. That way, you reduce the stress on the doublesided tape in the final install.

This is a great idea, but I also want to mention that is 3M VHB tape. With proper prep, I've seen it literally tear metal rather than come unbonded. It is unimaginably strong. Sticking it to fresh paint is a terrible idea, so your heat forming would be very helpful here.

You did a great job and the best way to learn to paint is by doing it. It’s actually good to make the common mistakes, so if they crop up in the future, you know how to correct them. One of the best educators for painting you could possibly get is working with model kits. Or at least that's what I did, on top of looking up professional painters on youtube to get a better understanding and to lock on to a pattern that I want to use for any given project. I have a 1997 Chevy Tahoe where heat had caused the paint to crack and working with that paint job I learned three things. The OEM paint job does not match the color it appears to be very well, Dark Cherry Metallic. To solve this issue, I've discovered that they used a Dark Clear Coat before adding the additional clear coat protection. And finally number three, The primer. I've sifted through a number of primers and determined that the paint job is so far gone it would make one wonder if it is even worth doing this. Reality is, since it's a 97 Tahoe I'm likely going to keep to the Chris Fix method of painting, but with a slight twist. To keep unevenness out of the paint job, I'm likely going to mask off a lot of rubber/chrome and scuff everything to touch up, respray, and then dark clear and clear coat the whole mess.

An old Air Conditioner condenser makes a really good water separator. You have to plumb it into a catch tank after the condenser and you are set, I never get any moisture anymore

Hi mate. Try using a tack cloth as the last step right before spraying. It picks up all the little specks that would otherwise get caught in the finish. Thanks for the series!

I enjoy the trial/error process and your perseverance in getting it right. And I hope the tape on the sail panels last. 👍

They look good. We all have to start somewhere. I recently refinished some wheels I picked up on the cheap for my Challenger, I made some boo-boos, but I used them as-is for now... However, when winter comes I will take them off and redo it

For the main body panels, make a DIY paint booth. Frame it with PVC pipe and couplers, wrap it in plastic, and put a cheap box fan on either side 1 blowing in and 1 exhausting. Cover the box fans on the inside with HVAC filters that are oversized for the fans. Trash the plastic wrap at the end, and the PVC can be taken apart and stored for the next paint project.

Painting is an art/science for sure. Thanks for sharing your "adventures" in car restoration!! No, you haven't inspired me to get into restoring cars, at least not yet. Maybe in a few years? Doing my best to keep my 2001 Chrysler Sebring Convertible Limited from ending up in a field under trees buried in mud/dirt. 19 years in, still no field parking spot, unless it's at a car show. Looking forward to seeing the next video!

A big improvement on the panels, they looked great, especially for your first time, I am restoring a 1974 Ford Cortina Mk.3 on my channel, and love seeing fellow classic car owners doing restorations, on their cars too, keep at it and your car will be looking lovely when done, we have all been in the same place having to re do something several times when we first start out, but that is how you learn and improve, with time and effort, the more you do the better you will get,

Thank you Mate. Just a avid fan, like every one else. This is real. Making mistakes. Waiting for bloody parts!! And really the motivation to keep going on a project is very hard at times. The work on the car, is the relaxing part. Lovin it & learning too. Fan from Sydney Australia.

12:48 You should have rotated the air cap there. Always line the two horns up with the stroke direction, otherwise you'll get different coverage every time you change the direction that you're moving the gun. I find it's best to leave the cap just loose enough that you can still rotate it (but obviously not too loose, or it won't seal). By the way, I also went from rattle cans to a gun. Regarding your remark about not being good with cans, it's mostly down to two things: prep and flash time. The paint does have a tendency to wrinkle like that if you mess up one of those two things. My only two gripes with cans are cost and the iffy spray pattern.
