Curious if you’d recommend split boarding/ skiing for a resort snowboarder who wants to do both without two sets of gear, or would I be better off having both?

Thanks for the note. The ski setup on a splitboard is not designed for actual skiing. They are non releasable and designed for climbing and very light/short descents. So unfortunately if you wanted to do both you would need a ski and split setup. Given that you already snowboard, getting a splotboars vs skis likely makes more sense. It is worth learning some ski basics though to fully maximize your splitboardong experience.. just basic snow plow turns is enough for most.

Any tips on how to better at split skiing? Especially on tricky narrow trails back to the car! Having your heels free is hard!

It sure is.. with all the soft boot binding setups you can get heel lockers which can make the downhill and side short skin free climbs easier.. Short of that.. go to the bunny hill on the ski hill, learn to pizza, then slowly graduate to steeper terrain. Early in my splitboarding life I would do 1 day a week at the resort just riding lifts and split skiing.. I had some epic crashes but got good at skiing in most conditions.. Just be very careful as split bindings don't release so knee injuries are a real potential.. Have fun with it.. haha. It will very much elevate your overall splitboard experience.. Also, when the skiing sucks go at and practise side stepping up small hills with no skins on and learn to skate in ski mode.. you will leave your split buddies in the dust if you can master that..

@@AQOutdoors Great advice thank you for your reply! I don't think there is a heel lock adapter for any of the union bindings or is that incorrect?

@@MrDeanoh27you are right.. no heel lockers for the unions.. time to learn to tele ski.. haha. In seriousness however, you can do some pretty good skiing on soft boota with the heels not locked, it will just rely on a few days of putting in some practise. Keep us posted on how it goes..

great video! what boots do you recommend for splitboarding? what are your opinions on hard vs soft boots?

Thanks for the comment and for checking out the video. The boots debate is always an interesting one. I think, for most new splitboarders (even if good resort riders) a soft boot setup is the way to go. It is overall cheaper, feels more familiar and is a great option for accessing the snow and terrain people typically start out in. The benefits of hardboots on my opinion come in the weight savings and better uphill performance. Hardboots are also a better option for ski/snowboard mountaineering Now, if the goal from the start is to get into longer trips, traverses and maybe coming from a mountaineering background, a harboot setup might be the way to go from the start. However, for most, softboots are a more familiar start point. Hope that helps
