Lesson learned from my setup last night - when you first connect the D1 to your computer and Laserbox Basic, UPDATE THE LASER'S FIRMWARE! I initially wasn't able to connect to my wifi. Updating firmware solved the problem.

Thank you for posting these videos! They are very helpful. I have watched several and still have a question. I just got my xtool and I am a newbie through and through. I can't get the dark engraving on the dog tag for some reason. I have tried the recommended settings as well as some other people have suggested. It worked fine on the wood. Do you have any suggestions on the perfect settings for the dog tag and/or trouble shooting processes I can try? Thank you.

more power and slower speeds. To get really dark, you'll want to use a transfer agent like Enduramark. Cheers

I recently purchased the Xtool D1 and I love this machine. It's a quality piece of machinery. I dumped the included software Laserbox right away for LiteBurn. There are 4 things that I wish the company would address in the future: 1. The electronics board is exposed and will easily dirty up with dust. There is no easy way to clean the board other than to occasionally use air pressure to get rid of the dirt. 2. The wire connectors to the motors, laser head and a rotary tool they are using are really intended for a more permanent connections. With repeated unplugging and plugging back in it is just a matter of time before one or more of the wires rip out of the connector. I know not to pull on the wires, but inevitably one will because it's a tight connection with tiny connectors. It's only 4 tiny wires, why not using a USB style connections? 3. The wire from the processor board to the laser head is simply hanging around and can easily get into the way of the work piece. Using a retractable coil cord would minimize this from happening. 4. My biggest complaint.... This thing need a limiter switch badly. Too easy it happens that the laser head smashes into one of the rails. Especially with newbies like me.

@@jward2389 So you can do very basic design work in Laserbox Basic. I would suggest something like Gimp or Inkscape for design work. I use Adobe Illustrator, but there's a monthly charge associated with that.

Love your videos. You explain things so thorough and make it so understandable. Your videos helped me in my decision to purchase the xtool d1 which is my first laser engraver. I used a blade engraver at my factory job about 13 years ago where everything was manual and wow.. this is so much different. I love it,, I'm excited! But... I received my xtool d1 yesterday. Got it together last night and started playing with it. Seems I'm having some trouble that I can't find much info about. My lines are coming out "squiggly" like, not straight. Almost as if it's getting bumped although I've made sure to stay away from it while cutting. Also if I do a simple shape such as a box, some times it doesn't connect all the lines. The box that my laser is in seems to fit kinda loose and doesn't seem to go down close enough without the honeycomb under it and to close with the honeycomb to focus correctly. The preset settings don't seem to come out correctly. I've taken off legs and added legs and doesn't seem to be correct. ☹ Please, can you help, what am I doing wrong ?. I love this machine and so excited to get to making awesome products with it. I hope I've explained this so you can understand. Any suggestions or where can I find answers? Thank You ! p.s. also I have the rotary but haven't hooked it up yet & still waiting for my air assist to arrive. Im currently only using the basic software but plan on getting the lightburn soon as i get these issues fixed. Thank You !!

Hey Gail! Sorry you're having issues. Without seeing the issue it sounds like your belts might be loose. You can tighten them with the screws at the back of the machine. I would suggest 2 things. 1. I've been thinking about getting one of these to "engrave" one of my pews. I watched your video regarding using a diode to mark metal. My question is, how tough is the marking on metal? If you buffed it with a scotch Brite type thing would it come off?

Loved the video! Thank you so much for your quick but thorough explanation on how to get started. I just recently bought my first laser (Xtool D1 Pro 20w) and I've been searching endlessly on how to make my first cuts. I've engraved seveal things but trying to figure out the right power/speed settings to make my first cut has been fairly daunting. Basically I'm afraid of buring my house down if my settings aren't right... lol. I followed along with your video and created a circle with a outline but all I'm getting for settings is 'User Defined'. No other material types. Not sure why because I've used others before. Also, how do I ensure the engraving will be done before the cutting? I've downloaded the trial version of Lightburn but I'm hoping I can stay with Xtool Creative Space because it's free. Maybe this is a mistake. It would be so much easier to have someone stand over my shoulder for my first couple projects... Are you free next Thursday? LoL. Thanks again for putting this video out. You should strive to learn Lightburn. It’s more versatile and will allow you to work with different machines. XCS “should” engrave before you cut. In Lightburn you can set the order.

I got my XTool a couple of months ago and love it! I recently greased it and cleaned the laser with Alcohol and a cotton swap. Since doing that my engravings on wood are showing raised grooves. Do you know what I did wrong or how I can fix it?

I would always run a frame before starting your project, just to make sure your laser is in the right position. Cheers

You'd need to run a power grid. It will depend on the kind of paint, paint thickness, material, etc.

Question: I am wanting to create a 12 x 12 inch mirror, on the software, is there a way to make a box that is 12x12 that will not engrave or cut, but just to give me a reference of where I want to put things on my project?

If you want the box to exist when you hit the blue button (say for framing purposes) just drop the power on the box to something like 1% and crank the speed all the way up. Technically the laser will still fire, but it won't affect anything. Cheers

I just got my XTool d1. I love it expect I am having trouble framing from laser box onto my material. It will show the centered image on laser box as “off centered” in the framing window. It throws off my alignment. Any tips? I have also moved the blue dot to the center of my image while framing but it still is not centering on my material.

Look at the white area around your image. Laserbox sees that as part of the image.

Help, I usually add text inside my designs to remind me what color vinyl and how many to cut. GlowForge software allows me to omit text (or anything I highlight) as a "no cut". Can I designate "no cut" areas in a design in LaserBox Basic?

Hey Lori, Air assist is an air pump that fires air at the area the laser is engraving or cutting. Helps reduce scorching of the surface and ash build up. Cheers

I'm looking to buy an Ortur Laser Master 2 Pro for projects for friends and family. I see there are two options. 1 for better engraving and one for cutting/ with air assist nozzle. If I go with the one that's best for cutting can it also do engraving too?

Depends on what you want to do. If you want to cut a lot go LF, if not go SF

No. You just need to make sure you set your engrave power and speed and cut power and speed on the respective tabs.

Love your Vids Nick. Informative, fun and inspiring. I also have a D1 and have been using it a bit. On mine the red cross is not where the laser starts. Its frustrating when I try to position an image on an object. I have reached out the manufacture, but there is apparently a language barrier. I have asked if the offset can be tuned or adjusted somehow, but received no good response. Does your laser start where the red cross says it should? Try this ... Make a spot on a test piece align to it and burn a square. I have found work arounds but it is really annoying. I may try the FB site for ideas also, but not into the social media dealeo. Keep the videos coming. They are Awesome!

So the crosshairs are offset on purpose. And the laser should move to where the crosshairs are when it starts. #25 in the troubleshooting guide here: support.xtool.com/hc/en-us/articles/4409750527383-Troubleshooting-guide-for-xTool-D1 You can turn the crosshairs off in Laserbox Basic and use the dot from the laser instead. You find how to do this under Laser Positioning Mode, about three quarters down the page here: support.xtool.com/hc/en-us/articles/4413919155095-User-Manual-For-Laserbox-Basic-Software-PC-Version- Cheers

Once your firmware is updated you can choose a laser dot too. I much prefer it!

So my advance settings in laserbox basic underneath fill or not there. I do not have the ability to adjust the sharpness to adjust how many lines per centimeters. How do I get those to show up? I have it in engrave mode I’m trying to do slate tile

Hi. Just put the Xtool D1 Pro together and downloaded laserbox and Xtool creative space. Did the firmware update and it will connect to creative space but it will not connect to laserbox through USB. I have version 1.1.9. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sound like old firmware. Fire up Laserbox Basic and check the firmware on your machine.

Hey man i need some help. I got my first 5w Xtool D1 Pro and I am working on an engraving now for close to 4 hours and I am so close to the end like with in 20 min or so and the machine said flame detected (in my case it wasn’t a flame it was in direct sunlight to make it go off) and stoped. I can’t find anything in the manual or on line what to press to restart.

You have to start over in XCS. There's no "pause / restart" function.

Thank you for doing this video !! I've watched it several times, and have done some ornaments and things, but nothing too difficult. I do have a question. I'm using Laserbox basic and have a page full of crosses and Christmas ornaments that are saved in the SVG format, but there are like 18 of them on one page. I'd like to do them one or two at a time, and so far I'm not having any luck getting them into Laserbox from Inkscape. I would think that a cut and paste or maybe copy and paste would work, but so far not successful. Thank you again for your videos. I have a long way to go !! :) I've used a scroll saw for maybe 40 years, and every time I try this, I think I could already be done if I were using it ! LOL

I don’t think you can do that in their software. You’d be better off in Lightburn.

Ok I have another question so I set my D1 engraver up and it said that I can use it with my smartphone that is why I got it cuz I don't have a regular computer I only have my cell phone that I get on the internet with and everything so how do I get it where I can use it just with my cell phone if I don't have regular computer with Wi-Fi

From the video I can see you're running a MAC. My main machine I use at home is a iMac, I am using a PC laptop to connect to the "D1" which I just received yesterday. Under the "FILE" menu, I don't see a save option. How do you save a project that you are working on? Do you have to export it? I played with the basic version and so far, my 4 projects, (wood engrave / cutout, and 3 dog tags) have worked without any problems, but I have done them all using the Laserbox basic program. Again, I am wondering why there is no "save" option for a project that you are working on. Thanks for the tip on the "write protect" switch. Have upgraded the firmware, and also downloaded lightburn. Since this is my first laser, I was overwhelmed with lightburn and ended up using Laserbox basic.

Gotta make sure your engrave is within the workable area of the laser. Sounds like you're trying to move the laser outside that area. Cheers

For some reason my xtool when I etch dog tags, it frames right but the text is off set to the right, up and down is ok. Also I would think if I set the parameters for the size of the text that is the size I get but mine is smaller. Any help on both cases? Thanks a bunch

Change from the crosshairs to the laser dot and use that to find center. As for the font coming out smaller I would just adjust accordingly. Cheers

Hello hello! Great vid - two questions - Why does the the system have TWO places to set speed? Doesn't the main area you work with all setting mean that's the speed when working and the 'speed' in the START area just have to do with how fast the movement buttons and framing, but the MAIN speed is the actual main speed.....? - does the main SPEED matter at all (before you get to the START area?)

The speed you set in the main window is how fast the laser moves while working. The "other" speed is how fast the laser moves when it's NOT working.
