How to pay off your laser (using the xTool D1). How to Laser Engrave Tumblers. Now that you’ve got the laser. What are you going to do with the laser? This is a simple way to make money with your laser by engraving tumblers. It’s a hot market. The materials are cheap and it can be done in the background to pay off your laser.

just a tip, you can just use tumbler or anything you will try new that you have not experienced with and make a diagram with lots of squares each one with a different setting so that in one tumbler you have all the settings on it so which ever you like the best with the most detail on that setting you just use that setting for all the rest so you wont have to waste lots of tumblers for no reason....learned that from an actual laser engraver guy on his youtube page ;-)

Blue tape and low burn settings are your friend for prototyping.
@dreamkiss4u
@dreamkiss4u 11 ай бұрын
@josephKEOarthur problem with blue tape is that you will never get a real sense of what it will really look like if you trying to burn something on a different material because other materials don't burn the same so it's best to do a sample of every power setting in the can't type of material your going to be doing it on.

A much easier method of alignment (assuming you move that laser from time to time) would be to measure distances from that convenient targeting dot on your stepper motor to the center of the rotary axis and end of the tumbler and either creating a fixture in your software (if software supports fixturing) or simply aligning the base of the rotary with a square to the laser frame and moving the known distance from the targeting dot to engraving zero. The machine is capable of both measuring and setting exact distances. There is no reason to eyeball it. My two cents. :)

But burning off spray paint is not the same as removing powder coat. What may look promising may not be. If these lasers are like the CO2 overshooting the power won't matter because it will not harm the metal on the cup. You would need a fiber laser for that

You could have inverted the black and the white and gotten the results you were looking for with the original dragon. Though it would require you to do more work in photoshop/illustrator to frame up/outline it, since it would be removing the background. Just like the second design did.

@@BuildDadBuild Thx, would really appreciate if you can make a video on engravong a glass plate. The one which is easy to be found in Dollar Store.

Thanks for the great video! I would suggest using a cheap vinyl cutter like a silhouette or cricket and cut out the vinyl sticker like a stencil and paint your thermal design on or if you want something nice that will not slowly chip away from washing it in the dishwasher, get a cheap powder coat cut from harbor freight and powder coat that baby! I have done this and it works great.

Hey Donovan. So you can do this with a cricut and what kind of paint that won't come off. I have a cricut and would like to try this

new to the XTool D1 and Also the Build Dad Build channel. I have a 5W version just purchased and learning on. Do you happen to have any good settings you would run for what seems some more thick powder coat? I have some mugs I am working on and the results vary between not able to remove the black residue or by over powering it distorts the image.

If the coated metal setting isn't working slow it down for better results. Are you cleaning the tumbler afterwards? Mine always look a little smokey before I clean them up. And check out this video to help with distortion. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJvPpmtql6p4jNE Cheers!

Freaking awesome! So what were the final settings on that awesome ying-yang tumbler? Still 100% power with 70 mm/s?

It was whatever the settings are for painted metal.

I'm very interested in starting a side hustle with engraving and learning how to do it. I'm guessing painting with rattle can black and retesting would be out because it is a different coating and would produce different results?

Tip: go to your local salvation army or goodwill (also yard sales) and buy all the used ones you can find for testing purposes. Also you don't need to test the entire image...a 10mm sliver of the image will be enough for you to tell what's happening..... meaning you can easily use one used tumbler for 15-20+++ test prints!

Very cool! What if you have a tapered tumbler that get larger towards the top?

I haven't done them yet, but I've seen folks put a wedge under one end of the rotary tool to level the engraving surface. Cheers

Enjoy your videos. How do you price your tumblers? What all do you figure into the price?
@BuildDadBuild
@BuildDadBuild Жыл бұрын
A lot of things figure in. I don’t do tumblers on the regular so I charge more per when they order fewer tumblers. Also account for price of the tumbler, shipping and laser time.

Just a thought, to make alignment of the rotary table easier could you engrave a 3-5 inch straight line on the base/board to align/square the rotary table and not have to eye-ball it?

Hey there..new xtool d1 user, fairly experienced laser user though. Have you tried speeding up the tumbler engravings? Just did some testing on my day off today, and am up to 9000-9500mm min at 75-80% at 318dpi and having great luck with easy cleanup. Not trying to show my ass, just telling what I just tried today. Much better than my 5w ortur lol. Keep up the great vids man!
