just a tip, you can just use tumbler or anything you will try new that you have not experienced with and make a diagram with lots of squares each one with a different setting so that in one tumbler you have all the settings on it so which ever you like the best with the most detail on that setting you just use that setting for all the rest so you wont have to waste lots of tumblers for no reason....learned that from an actual laser engraver guy on his youtube page ;-)

Blue tape and low burn settings are your friend for prototyping.
@dreamkiss4u Жыл бұрын
@josephKEOarthur problem with blue tape is that you will never get a real sense of what it will really look like if you trying to burn something on a different material because other materials don't burn the same so it's best to do a sample of every power setting in the can't type of material your going to be doing it on.

A much easier method of alignment (assuming you move that laser from time to time) would be to measure distances from that convenient targeting dot on your stepper motor to the center of the rotary axis and end of the tumbler and either creating a fixture in your software (if software supports fixturing) or simply aligning the base of the rotary with a square to the laser frame and moving the known distance from the targeting dot to engraving zero. The machine is capable of both measuring and setting exact distances. There is no reason to eyeball it. My two cents. :)

@@BuildDadBuild First off, thank you for getting back so fast. I’ve asked questions of gaming youtubers, movie youtubers and more, and if anyone answered, they’ve never gotten back so fast. I REALLY appreciate it! As for your answer, I just wanted to know if that was all. I think I’ve done good research, I’ve seen that speed and cutting power will be affected, but considering how good the XTOOL seems to be, I was wondering if that would be all, and whether the 5W would still “pretty much” accomplish what a 10W could, albeit a bit slower. I recently had a job where I laser engraved weapons parts for the military. I never used a laser before that gig, but in my spare time, I learned how to use the machine on my own for a few personal projects (metal business cards, tumblers, etc). So I figure it’s a skill I can learn to do at home, and I was looking for a good starter machine to do it. The machine I used at work was 100k+, but for what I’m trying to do, I feel like your videos have proved, the XTOOL can do it on a smaller scale. When I go from Inkscape to laser box I sometimes get just an outline, how can I fix this?
@BuildDadBuild2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know anything about Inkscape. Sounds like it needs a fill color.

ive watched several of your xtool D1 videos and im trying to find the one where you made a change to rapid movements to slow them down a little because it was causing your tumbler to slide past the position. Im unable to find it. Where was that setting? and was it lightburn? still searching. love your content. keep it up!

Thanks brother. That setting was in Laserbox Basic.

Any idea why I keep very light lines of the paint left over. With bigger designs I can hit it with some fine fine steel wool.

Sounds like you may have a loose belt, or the rotary is either not set to the right width or is slipping for some reason. If you lower your speed, does it go away?
@MrChamz992 жыл бұрын
@Build Dad Build I will dou le check the belts and I will lower the speed to see what is the results. I will get back you. Thanks for responding.

@Build Dad Build I went through everything and it seems like your recommendation of the speed really helped. I appreciate your help.

how long did it take for the laser to etch the final result? I am looking at buying one and this is a great help, but I am curious as to time/tumbler ratio
@BuildDadBuild2 жыл бұрын
About 35-45 minutes. In my testing the 20watt unit can engrave faster. But I haven’t tried it with the rotary yet.

@@BuildDadBuild that's not bad at all! I know the dialogue lasers especially a 10w, isn't everybody's dream per se, but I'm really liking this machine. Of course I wanted to go with something like a gloforge, but who can afford something like that as an entry level?! I appreciate your response, as well as your videos. I'm going to get to ordering and start designing!

I'm looking at one of these to laser engrave firearms. Will this machine work for this purpose?
@BuildDadBuild2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. It will mark some metals, more with some sort of transfer agent. But if you really want to engrave metal, you're looking at a fiber laser. Cheers
@55shd2 жыл бұрын
@@BuildDadBuild maybe I'm wording this wrong. I'm looking to etch more than engrave. Mostly on aluminum frames that's painted on a lower AR rifle and Glock upper slides also with factory paint.

Just wanted to say I love your work and you make these video's interesting and informative. I have a laser master 3 and was wondering I am engraving a name brand tumbler and the black residue is hard to come off. I have tried your method but still leaves lots of soot! It almost feels like the powder coating is burned into the stainless. Should I be slowing down the laser or reducing the power. I run it at 1000 mmm @100%. when I do the Amazon cheaper brands I use 2000 mmm @ 85% power and works great! Just wanted your input to see what you think! Thanks in advance! Love the channel!
@BuildDadBuild Жыл бұрын
You’d have to run a power and speed grid to be sure. It could be possible you’re not burning Al the way through the powder coat.
@jeffguindon3035 Жыл бұрын
@@BuildDadBuild Do you know where I can find a burn grid? Thanks again for the quick reply! I slowed down by half and I got better results for sure! Do you think that cold could be a factor as well? I am using the laser in my garage and it can get a bit chilly, I do run a heater in there when it gets really cold in these northern winters! Again much appreciated I always look forward to your new vids they really do help!

Hi BDB! Thanks for the vid... great stuff! Question, can the xTool D1 engrave on a convex surface? If not, do you know what laser does?
@BuildDadBuild2 жыл бұрын
Depends on how convex. Slight curvature you can split the difference with the focus (like on a flask). But without a jig of some sort for more convex surfaces I think you'd run into a focusing problem. Cheers
@daimyo2k2 жыл бұрын
@@BuildDadBuild Hey BDB, thanks for the reply! There is about .25" difference on the diam., so .125 of the rad., split would be .0625. Do you think that would be safe from any distortion??
