Great video. This is the coolest idea. The product life of an iPad with iOS 17 has just jumped a number of years instead of months. These iPads can have a second life in 1st and 2nd world classrooms for computer projects or learning in general, instead of sitting in closets collecting dust.

I don't use my iPad for a Raspberry Pi, but as a second screen for my PC - for now. Using it for a RasPi was not on my radar, but now it is! Very interesting idea, and it could lead to me using my iPad for more "serious" work. What I used on the iPad is "MoniCon", but I use Camo Studio (paid version) on my Windows PC to connect my iPhone as a webcam - and had no idea, that it could be used much more broadly, even on the iPad. Now I know and have to see what else I can use with it …

RetroPie is great. I have it set up on my Arcade1Up cabinet. Have you checked out WebRcade? Plays all the old school systems and arcade games right through your browser. No lag and everything works amazing.

You can get a HDMI driver board for an ipad display. That would let you resuscitate a broken iPad as an hdmi monitor that would also have lower latency and higher image quality than this setup. I have one but not plugged it in to my pi.

This solution is more for a working iPad - so that I get to use both an iPad AND a raspberry Pi - a PiPad :)

Thank you!! I used my Apple bluetooth keyboard and mouse to connect to the RPi and have a sweet setup now with the iPad monitor through the capture card.

When you RaspberryPi ist connected to your WiFi or Intranet you can use you iPad with a VNC App without using an adapter.

I use a raspberry pi to run CNC GSender software and have a full size monitor. This might be a very good solution for a less cumbersome setup. I am assuming that the ipad screen is no longer a touch screen when running the app in the video. Am I correct?

@@Simplifycnc that is correct - I don’t normally run my iPad as a permanent screen. It’s more for setup and then setting up remote access where I run the Pi via that remote access.

My I pad doesn't have USB C Will it work with a lightning OTG adapter? My Ipad was whatever generation first supported the pencil.

@@andreamitchell4758 I’m not sure if that generation would support this. You would need a different adapter and the software may not run on that iPad.

I just stumbled on this video… what I’d like to do is have an RPi running Linux (so I could run a 1st class “office” package) and connect to it so I could run the Linux apps side by side with iPad apps… Why? Because ALL of the Office-type apps for iPad are missing big chunks of functionality or have brain-damaged interfaces. There are things I can do with Excel on a PC that are not right or completely missing on an iPad.

I use an older model iPad that has the lightning interface not usb c. Is there a way do this with my iPad? I would love to use my iPad as my pi 400 monitor. Thanks

In the App Store there is a list of iPad models that are compatible with CAMO Studio. There are USB-C to Lightening adapters, but first check the store to make sure your model is one the list.

I haven’t noticed any issues - I’ve used the same setup with my Switch and played games - which worked really well.

No - it’s just a monitor. That would be cool, but it doesn’t Edit- the touchscreen brings you back to iPad functions - so it does allow you to switch back to iPad programs.

Why not - the iPad only recognizes one HDMI input stream. Where it comes from (Raspberry Pi, Windows, Linux, Android Box) doesn't matter.

It’s an HDMI capture cable - they are quite inexpensive. I think I put a link in the description. Then, you need CAMO studio software (free) And, of course, an iPad that can run the software 😀

@@LearningandTechnology Thanks, I’ll look into that, I’ve just purchased the new raspberry pi 5, it has dual HDMI I was hoping that this new version might be able to spring straight out into the iPad as it’s running on 17 now…. I think I’ll do a bit more exploring, but thank you for your reply.

HDMI - Orion app for iPad also acts like a monitor. But it will have the same requirements as Camo. The iPad needs to have USB-C and it will require a USB-C Video Capture cable.
