Thank you for introducing me to this notebook, I love leuchtturm! I am currently taking a veterinary technician course online, and found that a combo of digital and analog methods work best for me. I have created a bullet journal set up for keeping track of weeks, modules and due dates and find the “hands on” aspect keeps me engaged and checking in more, paying more attention. A notification from my phone re: a due date I am more than likely to simple delete the notification and forget about it! I do use a digital calendar to time block my ideal day - see where I have time for various things, along with Quizlet for spaced rep and flash cards along with their other great features. I use a cheap notebook as a bit of a commonplace book to catch random thoughts, lists etc. I am intrigued by this notebook in the video and it fits into our 12 week semester, I might have to test it out! Our courses suggest keeping a learning journal but I have often stared at an empty page and have no idea what to write, so this might be the solution :) Thanks you!

@@KaylaUpN0rth fantastic! Peanut (my gray cat) approves your career choice! This is something that I liked about this journal - it gave me a starting structure. I might not need it for all my future learning journals - but it does help provide a system instead of that “blank page” you mention.

I'm glad the KZbin algorithm brought this video into my feed! 👏 I use a messy combination of technology and paper. I like using the OneNote and Obsidian applications, but also write in journals and on index cards. I especially love the Leuchtturm 1917 journals, and will be using one of them as a dedicated learning journal.

In Ecological 4E cognition, learning occurs from movement actions on our world. We simultaneously are shaped by our world models and shape or construct our world through our actions. Agency (perceptual acuity)leads to action-selection based on perceiving affordances. Affordances exist in the world, not within ourselves or others. This is great information on categorizing and cateloguing (structural) information! Please speak to how we translate learning into recognizing pragmatic affordances which require enactment.

The whole "second brain" notion era seems misplaced. This video, I think, brings reality back to the conversation. The reality is that your wetware is the ultimate decider of effectiveness. If you use all the notions of the world to collect without retention. You have either lost or have become dependent, in which case you've have lost for different reasons. It's possible for you to notion your way to solid learning. But for most people, I doubt that is the case. Frank's suggestion of a structured physical notebook seems to be the better option. Imho it will slow you down and involve more of "you" in the learning process. If people were truly able to learn at the speed/scale of notion, the world would see massive increases in polymaths. Given we don't see lots of polymaths (anecdotally), seems like the slow/deliberate method still wins the day. Kudos to Frank.

@@12345idiotsluggage thanks! I appreciate the thoughtful comment and agree. It can be overwhelming to over-use technology in learnings. This may seem odd from a channel that focuses on learning and technology, but I’ve long believed that technology is a tool and not a solution unto itself. My hope is that those that do watch my more technical videos do so through the lens of applying those technologies towards a purpose. A journal, time, and thoughtful reflection are the most powerful part of the process.

Very interesting topic, thank you for the video. Would you think this journal and method is well-suited to "learning" a novel of classic literature? My desire would be for greater engagement and better recall. I'm about a third of the way into The Brothers Karamazov at the moment.

@@liamtaylor4955 I’m not as familiar with classic literature from a study perspective, but intuitively I would say it would be a cautious yes. There may be less ability for experiential learning around topics related to this type of topic. I suppose you could though. It seems more like reflective and connective type of learning. That stated - the journal is really good for initial structure of learning. It’s the type of tool that I’m planning on using one time for one topic, but then using the lessons learned from it to customize my own path in other subjects.

I have mostly one issue with this type of notebook: I detest a given structure - I prefer having an idea sketched out for me to expand on in a regular notebook. But on the rest, I mostly agree. I think apps like GoodNotes show how much we like to just write something out instead of typing. It makes learning more intentional - the second I handwrite, I have to choose what I write about. And from then on, you can also add studying apps with intention that add value to the workflow you have on paper (for example, Anki is a great addition).
@LearningandTechnology
@LearningandTechnology Күн бұрын
@@Maerlyns You touch on a very good point - and one that I both agree with and have more planned to say about: the intersection between too much structure and not enough structure. This particular Learning Journal is quite nice and, in my opinion, habit-building. Sort of like training wheels on a bike. For anyone experienced with learning - it may come across as too prescriptive. At the same time, I like the idea of being “edited” or “controlled” in the learning journey - either as first steps or a reminder/refresher. As the name of my channel suggests, I am a big fan of using digital tools to enhance learning. However, with my students, the digital tools used incorrectly can sometimes become a distraction at best, and create an illusion of learning at worst. Thank you for your thoughtful comment - this is exactly the type of conversation we need to have around learning!

Great content, I like the idea of having a structure in one's learning, but sorry to say, if this is an ad for the notebook...then it's starting to feel annoying for me. Everywhere I listen someone is selling something.....is there anyone out there giving genuine advice? Just my two cents anyway. No hard feelings. Keep it up with the content content creation.
