Really nice! And good to see we're not the only people out there that say "good enough." That latch on the forward locker MAY be ok but you'll be surprised at what comes open when you're in heavy seas. We started with basic latches and then moved to positive locking latches everywhere after being in heavy weather and having to clean up all the open lockers. Normally the boat only moves port and starboard, but in big seas you'll also be pounding fore and aft. Also.. careful of the metal types. Most magnetic metals will corrode.

Its amazing how much nicer it looks with doors covering all the storage cubbies. I'm sure that it makes the boat more cheerful to be in. A small boat gets cluttered really fast anyway, but with the storage lockers open, the mess is a permanent part of the boat's vibe. Psychologically, the doors make the boat a much more pleasant place to live in long-term.

Next time you leave plates to dry after putting epoxy on both sides, place them on two strips of wood that has nails put through them so the plates only rest on the very tip of the nails, that does two things, it lets both sides dry evenly and only leave a very small dent to sand over, just a small tip for another day, otherwise keep up the good work .

Great work. I have refurbished two older model Chris Craft Cruisers and obviously do a lot of wood working. Just a tip for painting both sides of your doors and other materials. To keep fro laying them flat on plastic and getting the wrinkled look, go to the toy department of your local Walmart and buy a couple of bags of Jacks. Yes, those little metal stars that we used to play with as kids. Place four of those near the bottom corners and lay your panel on them. You’ll get minimum impact on the bottom side and minimize trying to sand out the wrinkles. Happy sailing.

Good work Jordan. The doors look nice with the paint and the rounded corners. agree with Salty Escape about the table leg. I've had several similar legs cut like that that have split. If you have access to a table saw you can cut a groove in the top edge and glue in a batten to keep it from splitting. Take care and remember it's not how fast you move forward as long as you keep moving forward.

Hey guys, You're obviously a fairly talented woodworker, I do have one simple suggestion... On the table leg, consider drilling it and putting in a dowel to stabilize it. Concern is the short grain will break again with use or when you install your hinge. Great job over all though! We enjoy your videos. We are in contract, pending a survey on our first sailboat and I intend to do some interior facelift work, your videos are great inspiration. Thanks for your tireless work and sharing. -Corey (KZbin Channel Salty Escape)

I’m a new subscriber and just got caught up on your videos. I’ve been thinking of your wind turbine issue. More power is good, and power at night is good, also. I think the best answer would be to use a transom bracket with a slide-in plate welded to the base of a mast at the proper angle. The mast would use 2 braces off of the solar arch for stability and the right amount of offset from the panels, and be just tall enough to allow the blades to clear the braces. If you wanted even more offset from the panels, you could have the mast made in a dogleg shape to keep it far enough aft. Sorry, I don’t have the tools to do a digital sketch, but the design would be very simple. Use a trapezoidal plate attached (wide end up) with channels on the angled, opposite sides, and through-bolted onto the transom. The base of the mast has a matching plate that slides downward into the transom plate and is engaged by the channeled rim of the plate. With the mast plate at the right angle, the mast goes straight up from there, or can go up, angle out and then go up again (dog leg) to the right night. Braces from each side of the arch connect to the vertical portion of the mast. I’d do it all in whatever alloy the arch is made from.

As others have mentioned, the short arm of the table leg is going to split again. Not if, but when. First of all, oak splits extremely easily. It's the nature of the beast. The geometry of that leg guarantees another split. There are several ways to mitigate against it, however, some already suggested. A dowel parallel to the upper surface, although you might not have enough drilling resources (including experience) to do it well. I have a drill press and I'd be hard, er, pressed to do a good job at it. The piano hinge idea is also good, and the first one I thought of as I was watching, but it depends on the attachment with small screws. I think I'd probably machine a slot (also nearly as difficult as drilling for a dowel) along the top and glue a spline into it. That potentially introduces a cross grain situation ensuring further splits of the oak, but the potential is significantly mitigated by the relatively small areas involved. Moreover, even if (when) it does split the oak, the result will be principally cosmetic and in an area rarely seen.
@SaltyEscape5 жыл бұрын
yeah, a spline is a good idea too! He should have access to a table saw, this would be technically more feasible than a dowel with a limited shop. A third option would be to laminate thin long grain wood on either side, maybe 1/4 inch thick to create an oak ply of sorts. epoxy it together.

This is a year old, so I assume you've had some experience with it. But just watching what's here, there are a couple of things I wonder about. One: I don't think a magnetic latch will keep doors closed underway. The tendency of doors to open and spill the contents in a rough seaway is truly amazing. The other is...the square corners on the table. Ouch waiting to happen if you're using it underway. I think it will all look great though and I envy you having a work room close to the boat.

Don’t know if you did this, or thought about it after the fact, but I would knock the bottom corners of the table leg down some, so it’s not such a hard angle and possible scratch the floor, or ding / chip the corners. Kinda like 2 small and rounded 45 degree angles on the bottom where it meets the sole.
@LearningtheLines5 жыл бұрын
Good idea. I also have to add a dowel and a small hole in the sole for the leg to fit into. Right now if you kick the leg by accident the table falls down.

@jeffgriglack96245 жыл бұрын
I think the plate that the magnetic door latch uses is going to rust pretty quickly in the salt air. You should remove the plate and coat is with some varnish or epoxy. Also, how are going to keep the sliders closed while underway? Is there some way to latch them?
@48whodat5 жыл бұрын
You can create the look of the old door, by grooving the door in the same spacing of the old door, stain the grove are burn it black and stain the other parts to match. On the other doors if you cut a 1/4 piece of plywood the same length and 1/2 inch wider than the spaces between the doors and glue it to the back of the door spacers you will have a 1/4 inche over hang to catch you doors to make then flush
@walkerig13 жыл бұрын
Front your PVC board doors with the same floor boards as you use for the floor and that bulkhead?

I have the exact same problem with my boat. All the doors are missing. I'm wondering what thickness wood did you use? I can get plywood down to 3/8 or Luian down to 1/4. Which do you think would work best? Also, why didn't you stain the doors? I think even coated with the epoxy they looked great! I'm a big fan of stained or vanrished wood. Painted wood is plain. But that's my opinion. Thanks

That table looks nice. Are you going to latch table leg somehow? I can see that thing swinging wildly underway.
@dugclrk5 жыл бұрын
A little magnet on the bottom would probably be all it needs.
@netpackrat5 жыл бұрын
For the stowage under the v-berth, I think you would be happier with drawers there than just shelves. When you want to look at the sight gauge for your water tank, it would be much easier to remove drawers complete with their contents and then put back when you are done, than dig out all of the loose items on the shelves and then put them all back. Table leg will most likely break again because the corner is inherently weak due to the grain orientation. It would have been better to have made that piece out of plywood, or to have made it out of multiple pieces.

So the weird thing is it's not on their website, but it's definitely in the store, at least in Florida. It's in different sections in different Home Depots as well. I'd walk into your HD and look in the plywood section, and if it's not there check where the trim is. It's sold in 2'x4' sections in 1/4", 1/2", and 3/4" thicknesses. Also, they have 4'x8' sheets in the 1/2" thickness and only the half inch thickness. Hope that helps.

@@LearningtheLines I believe he's talking about the plastic doors. A helpful hint for you, when painting or coating with epoxy, take some scrap pieces of wood and drive nails or drywall screws through them. Place them on your table, screws facing up, then put your painted items on the screws. The items will not stick and when dry, you wont see where the screws touched your paint or epoxy.
