I totally understand why you are so taken with Neptune's Highway. I was too. In my 50 years of messing about with small boats I have never been aboard a vessel as well maintained; including my own. Contrary to a comment below the interior is anything but "worn" looking. It sparkles, and the wood just leaps out at you. I sold my Hans Christian 48 T , Bravura, after 32 years of ownership and 14 seasons of charter work in the BVI. I spent most of 2020-21 looking for a replacement . When I boarded Neptune's Highway I was 90% convinced I'd found my new boat. What was really appealing it was truly "turn key"; it was ready to go tomorrow. No punch list, no more money to be spent. So why didn't I buy her, as the price we agreed upon was both fair and reasonable. There were several reasons, but the main one I could not sail her by myself. I was use to a Hood Stoaway mainsail which made handling the 390 square foot main on Bravura not only simple but safe. The rig on Neptune's Highway was set up for two people, and during our sea trial the owners showed how easy it could be with experience and co-ordination. But alone...impossible. Other factors also lead me to decide to pass. Those were: 1) the deep draft, 2) the lack of a marque;.everyone knows a Hans Christian, or Bristol but few, if any, know of a Davidson. that makes resale more difficult, 3) while the aft bunk is wide it has very little head room, 4) the commentator referred to the head as a "wet head" but it wasn't even that. there was no curtain, and arranging one would be difficult. wetting all the beautiful wood would be a sin. and as a live aboard I need a shower, and finally having spend 32 years on a heavy displacement vessel which was both fast and steady Neptune's Highway felt just like one would expect from a race boat...light and lively. If you are looking for a beautiful, turn key boat that really sails you should give Neptune's Highway a look. If I had a steady sailing partner I would have bought her. But I don't, so I didn't. I bought a Bristol 45.5 with a Hood Stoaway Main; and a punch list as long as your arm.

We are cruising 6 months a year in an undersized boat (34ft). We were going to step up to a 40 ft + cruising boat but, to be honest, too many of the Caribbean and Pacific Islands remain closed for cruising boats we decided now is not the time. Moreover, a lot of full time cruisers have given up cruising, due to these restrictions, and there are many boats like this currently available in places like Guatemala or Panama.

That central main companionway would be a definite no from us for either short-handed or family cruising. It makes too many everyday movements too difficult when at sea or even when raining at anchor (that dodger won't protect you from rain that doesn't come from ahead when in a marina). Getting a young child from the cockpit to the cabin would be difficult. Passing food from the galley difficult. Communicating between help and crew below is difficult. We much prefer a centre cockpit. I guess an IOR influenced hull which makes the saloon look very narrow (the dark wood really does make it seem even smaller). How deep is the hull form? I assume she is quite flat underneath (I assume a narrow very deep bolt-on fin keel and spade rudder), that seems less than ideal for world cruising (even beyond the limitations of that huge draft). That racing rig is going to be very expensive when it needs new rigging. The galley was very nice.

7.5 FOOT DRAFT and thats probably not loaded. You could be pushing close to 8 feet and a 65 foot stick. Also the helm station is not protected by that dodger. It’s too far away. You would get soaked. I know, different strokes and all. Beautiful interior except for the aft birth, a real head Wacker. You couldn’t even sit up in that bed. But the expansiveness is impressive. I’m sure the sailing performance would be wonderful. But you would benefit with a bit larger crew as it is set up for racing. And the reason for the huge forhatch is to rapidly haul sails in and out with your crew. Beautiful but not my choice. You are right though, nice price. And some good equipment.

Nice job on the tour but I agree with the others that the deck layout and draft are deal breakers. Having the companionway not connected to the seating area creates extra risk when sailing offshore or in rough seas. I also think the middle dodger limits visibility from the helm. The price is a little high in my opinion. There are better boats in the same price range.

I’ve seen Island Packet 42’s at similar prices, and believe me, I’d take their layout and hull design over just about anything! I know they’re heavy cruisers that like at least 15-20 knots to get em moving well, but they’re still my favourite American built sailboat. Peace

Only 3 negatives for me. 7.5' draft is pretty deep for cruising isn't it? Also a single head, wife would kill me. The single head makes me nervous, as well. As one Aussie cruiser channel put it, "If you have two, you have one. If you have one, you have none." As someone who's looking for a boat to single-hand or sail with more passengers than crew, not having a protected way from the cockpit to belowdecks is a safety concern, enough that I think I see why no cruisers are buying it...

Not a fan of the deck layout at all for cruising. As mentioned, the separation of the cockpit and companionway would be a pain for communication or handing up food and drink. It would be dangerous in bad weather at night when you don’t want to be exposed to green water moving between the two. It seemed like there were no handholds anywhere along the coachroof. Perhaps it’s the boat’s racing heritage, but I wouldn’t want to have to go forward on a gnarly night.

It hasn't sold because it is an unusual layout, a small Not well known builder, huge draft, and a ton of competition in that size. You can pickup a Kelly Peterson 44 for a lot less, have a more functional layout and a barely realistic east coast draft of 6 feet. Likely just as fast in cruising situations. To me that is a $65-70,000 west coast boat essentially unusable almost anywhere on the east coast from the Chesapeake south. Interesting boat, but so unique that it really limits the market. Interior seems worn for a 100,000 plus boat.

Thanks for sharing. Yes. It's blue water worthy. Aside from the draft, the boat looks cloistered, dark inside. Buyers must think when you sell in a few years time, limited market will be less than $30K.

Hi, fellow sailor. I don't know why the question... for that price, you can find a more modern vessel, with a decent cockpit and a much better usage of the interior space - without looking like a cave. A Bavaria 39' from the 90s for example. That aft cabin may look good on a blueprint, but it appears to have less than 50cm to the ceiling. I'd buy it! Will the owner take 40 grand?

Nice presentation as always. As for the boat, and as a racer and cruiser that owns boats at the 40-50’ range, she is a mix of design ideas taken from racers and cruisers that makes zero sense altogether. I don’t see any sane cruiser taking the boat with a separate companionway in the middle of the deck - unlike a real center cockpit which is of course the better cruiser design. The aft cockpit is too narrow and poorly designed for practical use. The designer may have seen older Natur Swan designs and decided to copy but only half way… Inside, the only areas that make sense are the nav station and galley, the rest is again, a mix of ideas that provides problematic living conditions that get even worse with the disconnection from the cockpit. I’m sure there are some crazy sailors that will take this boat for probably half of the asking price. Anyway, fun seeing this video!

Not my cup of tea in a cruiser. Only one head which is ok but then no separate shower stall is too much for guests aboard. Very odd that a new Beta Marine engine was repainted. Something is wrong here. They painted over the alternator too. Bet there is overspray in it. Someone is trying to cover up some damage or something. The nav station was its best feature. But you need more than a nav station to have a good blue water sailboat. They should have hired a naval architect to do the deck layout instead of having a yard worker

The joy of owning a boat, for most cruisers is 'not crossing oceans' it is hanging out in great anchorages in really interesting places. Yes, you want a boat that is seaworthy and can handle blue waters, but that boat wants windows and light down below, so it does not feel completely cut off from the environment. I nearly bought a Wasa 51that was originally set up for racing, but suffered from the same issues. Beautiful wood down below, but a little claustrophobic in terms of lack of light and windows. And that 7 foot draft, while you will love it on the ocean, you will hate it in the Bahamas and so many other really great cruising locations. Also, she will not be a comfortable ride and that makes a bigger difference than you might think. A real beauty but not perfect for cruising.

Beautiful well built cruiser in great shape. Different and unusual layout. Obviously not to the tastes of many who are basing value elsewhere besides it's unique aspects. Some concerns such as hand holds on deck are not much of a reason to shy away from an otherwise good deal on a nice boat. There are other negatives at work that piled together can make a substantial case against buying this boat. I am one who rarely shies away from the unique, different and even unpopular if the boat is of high build quality. So for me it comes down to if the layout works for me.

"Blue Water" is one of the most overused terms in today's boat sales. This Davidson 44, an IOR design dating back to the 80's, with its dagger keel and spade rudder, rod rigging, 7' 5" minimum draft, no helm access without passing through a side deck filled with tripping hazards, extremely limited cockpit drainage, a very large, apparently poorly secured lazarette, nine winch positions (including running backstays). lacking adequate safety rails and lines, both above deck and below, makes clear that this is again a misapplication of the term "Bluewater." I could go on, with listing issue, but none of these factors would lead me to call this fast coastal cruiser a "blue water" boat. I've nothing against fast Bluewater boats... I've sailed in fast monohulls and tris purpose built for fast passage making. This boat just doesn't keep to the criteria, the first aspect of which is survivability. The boat's eight year circumnavigation doesn't persuade me either. People have circumnavigated in all sorts of boats, many obviously unfit for purpose, so such a claim for this nicely kept cruiser doesn't surprise me, but nor would it persuade me to use a 31 year old Grand Prix style design, the Davidson 44, for the same purpose. New Zealander Laurie Davidson's 44 footer was originally designed to be race sailed by a crew of 12, and the settees down stairs were stacked pipe berths, and the v-berth was a sail locker. There seems to be some confusion as to how much below decks was from the California 1990 construction, and how much from later conversion. As an aside, the practice of painting engines to make them look more presentable to likely purchasers is an abuse that really needs to stop, How many fittings, lines and electrical components are now beyond inspection, covered with paint?

I agree and I don't know if it matters, but the whole hull shape and not least interior (dough beautiful with all its wood and finish - as a woodworker I could see lots of goodies there) didn't appeal to me. A 44 footer with 4 bunks and 1 head? And the headroom and sharp corners in the aft cabin. Unless your 5 feet tall I would have felt trapped and seriously afraid of an early death in rough seas. I know my preferred boat is in another league quality- and economically-wise, but from the same period (1985-95) and for safety, comfort, quality and overall pleasure I'd stick to something like a Hallberg-Rassy 42 (E) or a Najad 44 as my "Dream Bluewater Cruiser." It's hard for me to think these sail slower than the fallen old racer in disguise presented here.

Love the deck layout, particularly the aft helm position with shelter from the elements. Below decks the bright work is awesome and the ratan weave, usually used for chair seats, is brilliant for door ventilation. Aft cabin is also great with decent headroom around. A bit tight above the bed but laying dowm it shouldn't be a problem. I am looking at something for single handed, high latitudes, non-stop Plymouth to Plymouth around the world. Depending on costthe condition of the electronics, this could be a good candidate with a few upgrades. The racing pedigree would also be very adventageous in going to wind in an emergency. An extra 5 degrees to windward can make all the differance.

Wait until you have a little cruising time logged as a family. You will then run away from a boat with this kind of deck layout. Little to no connectivity between the cockpit and down below would be an absolute disaster. Take it from someone that has cruised for 30 years, 20 of that with 3 kids onboard starting when they were each 2 weeks old. That is the reason why this boat hasn't sold, not the draft. Walters builds beautiful boats, but this one has very narrow market appeal.

We all know why the boat has not been sold. The solution is to build a pilot house to reach the cockpit dry.

Hold the phone..did you say "I recommend going down (the companionway) backwards" ? We always face the ladder on board....that's not backwards...!

All I needed to see was the opening ad at 0:50. 7.5 ft draft, too deep. 65 ft. mast height, too tall. Wont get under ICW fixed bridges. All of the deck safety you mention in the initial top side walk around is negated by that ridiculous placement of the companion way. How do tut ou get in set down first facing forward than catapult yourself into the boat. I guess there's a net to catch you inside? A trampoline???. Not preferred by most people. Shall we keep going....

You can not buy an apartment for that price....If it is taken care of...You are not going to lose any money....it would also be a good investment...It would be a "Live for free" apartment....Very nice.

Totally unsuitable for offshore cruising, lack of forward view from the aft cockpit and the route below from the aft cockpit. reminds me of an 80s IOR 42 foot boat that I did a del with.
