i thinks this is a very simplistic ideia. Is easy to invest the money you have and spend what it left when, what is left is more then enough to have a confortable life and plan for future expenses. The richer you are the easiest is to follow this philosophy so, if you want to shorten in up in a small clean sentence, it would be the classic "money makes money"

Hi. If I understand correctly, you mentioned that a stock can drop rapidly resulting in an increase in std dev without becoming riskier. That may be true in the future but std dev (unfortunately 😃) can only look at past performance. Also, when you do buy a publicly-traded stock, you do become part owner of the business.

As always, Jimmy, great information shared in a very simple way. I had one lingering question throughout this video. It seems that Buffet’s laws apply really well to single companies, but I am having a hard wrapping my head around how this would applicable to ETFs. A good portion of my portfolio are ETFs. All things considered and assuming our analysis is on point, would an investor be better off strictly following these laws applied to single companies, rather than attempting to mitigate risk with ETFs that track sectors, or indexes?

Hi Jim One question I believe battery sector might become more potential sector in future. If so then I really like plug power the way they are dealing with hydrogen but if you go through those companies balance sheet it doesn't make any sense to invest in those companies at least from my prospective but I like that sector. Any guidance on this kind of companies or businesses or sector would be really helpful

Very interesting as always, thank you! I would've sold at least a portion of the DIS position since it's so extremely expensive the stock probably won't give good returns in the next few years. So you could still have shares, but at least you could have a very nice profit meanwhile, and fast. Also, you can sell at the beginning of the year to postpone paying taxes until a year and a half later. Though I understand your long-term view and appreciate it since I'm also a value investor. It's just I try not to fall in love with any company too much so I keep being logical and rational, which is the way for investing, leaving emotions out as much as possible.

When calculating the intrinsic value of a company is it really necessary to subtract net borrowings from the intrinsic value or is it just another way to be conservative?
@sammynovak99833 жыл бұрын
Yes, because free cash flow to firm includes cash available to both lenders and shareholders. By subtracting debt from intrinsic value, you'll find how much shareholders can claim, and thus how much you as an investor should reasonably pay for the share.

Good stuff as always Jimmy. A question though - how do you feel about hedging strategies such as Ray Dalio's all-weather portfolio? If you look for an investment that is inversely correlated with stocks, you should theoretically have a decent alternative to just having money doing nothing while you wait for a good deal.
@evanchen7033 жыл бұрын
Jimmy looks at the long term outcomes when investing, not short term market fluctuations, so there is no point in investing in an "all-weather" portfolio. The "all-weather" portfolio is worse than buying an S&P 500 ETF in every metric. If you have a long term perspective, let's say you hold each (all-weather and S&P ETF) for 10-20 years, the all-weather will never beat the S&P 500 ETF. The only time all-weather wins is during a few years of economic uncertainty or decline (even then it may still be in the negative for those years), while the S&P will drastically outperform for the rest. The truth is the "all-weather" portfolio is made, by Ray Dalio, for people with emotional attachments to their investments (breaking rule #1 of investing), and it deceives them into thinking it's more resilient and better than the S&P (so they would buy it), but in reality the contrary is true. The ability of the all-weather portfolio is purposely overemphasized, so Ray Dalio's hedge fund gets more customers and earns more revenue. However, compared to the S&P 500 over decades (20 years+), one will realize that the S&P 500 is just as safe and will significantly outperform Ray Dalio's all-weather portfolio (not to mention the fees are minimal).

Based on your valuation, if you did not already hold Disney shares you would not buy at these prices. Then why would you not sell if the margin is higher than the tax you would need to pay? To say that "I got it at a good value" is to me the same as saying I don't want to see red figures in my portfolio even if it means I would give up some gains.
@LearntoInvest3 жыл бұрын
Let's say I do sell, where should I put that cash? Taxes are only one piece of it. Since I'm a fan of Disney's business looking out many years, holding their stock for many years makes sense in my mind. To take profit now, pay taxes, sit in cash with no great place to invest it, OR hold Disney for many years, I think holding Disney makes the most sense. But that's just me

Worst advice I ever tried to follow was "don't lose money". It made me so afraid of losing money that I kept selling at the first downturn, so I never held any investment long enough to let it make me any money. I do agree that risk is not equal to volatility. Volatility can be your friend if you are prepared to buy the dips.

Hi Jimmy! You missed some important things such as: 1) Zero-Sum Game, for ever buyer there's a seller and while one thinks the security is overpriced the other thinks otherwise and only one of them can be correct. 2) Keep cost to a minimum, less trading due to commissions and so forth. 3) The market is not efficient , and people are over optimistic or over pessimistic. Both institutional investors and retail investors are sheep and prone to following the wisdom(madness) of the crowds. Institutional Investors follow others competitors to not deviate from having extreme losses and keep clients. Retail investors follow others and are very susceptible to lottery winnings like games. 4) Balance sheet study item by item is way better than multiples such as P/E, ROIC, Cash flow per share , etc. 5) Look for insider behaviors, if insiders are buying , find out why, and the same for insider selling.
