Mark from Mazworx is a great guy. Over a decade ago I sent him an email asking questions around my SR20 build and he took the time to get back to me and helped me out. The local guys in Australia didn't want to talk unless I threw money at them first.

No one works for, sure talking is cheap but if 1 is busy then 1 must finish their work before they take on other work.. So never forget that, and lets not forget that YOU don't work for free unless you live in a world were everything is provided to ya/use to hand outs. Time, water, electric, shelter, food and medical isn't free yet.. Mazworx does great work from what I see, and so does Larry's power out of CT, but either way being a machinist (in any industry-auto/aerospace) is very hard work and very precise work, thus 1 shouldn't be bothered doing emails and phone calls and running machines at the same time just saying unless 1 is READY to spend that $$$.. Speed/hauling ass cost $$, thus 1 has to be prepared or learn to DIY and buy the equipment and or make friends in the "machinist world"..

@@jm361 Every business has an element of pre-sales, that's talking with potential customers. I wasn't asking for a hand out I was asking their recommendation, they were happy to give it unlike others that didn't. No ones obliged to give me anything for free, but I know who will be getting my business and who wont. I also took the time to give them a recommendation based on experience 10 years later! That was done for free as well. See how it works mate?

I got this crazy idea off making a 2 stroke 8.2 liter inline 6 billet aluminum 2 stroke diesel. Inline 6 with each part of the crankcase baffled off like a sled engine and oil feed to rods like skidoo 850 etec dry sump feed. Machine runner ports up from the crankcase mad a Coats rotary ball valve exhaust valve for a uni-flow 2 stroke. There woulds need to be enough bore spacing for the parts of make it with individual cylinders with big studs and a splite crankcase. i got on the horn with a Dart racing rep and explained this 2 stroke design idea i was running through my head and boy i had his attention for a while. Any thoughts on this?

why not build a combined head and block from billet. fit valves in the head section by putting your arm up through the cylinder. and installing the pistons though the bottom ? .

Squish definitely adds the needed chaos burn factor. My 1600 pushrod Ford has the combustion chamber in the piston and the valves sit flat on a flat head face(no head chambers). To up the compression for a 1600 you put in the 1300 pistons. Cool design by Ford... 😎👌

in the mid 90s i had one bloke talk to me about squish and getting the piston as close to the head as possible. i did exactly what he told me and I could run 23psi on 98 and never ever heard any ping out of that engine
@dj4monie6 жыл бұрын
Only problem is that is the quote "easy" thing to and with hot rodders looking for budget solutions is always the norm. However the answer is more nuanced and high octane fuels would solve that, RON 98 is about 93 octane in the US and not race gas. In California it's 91 R+M and in places like Utah, it's 90 R+M. My favorite solution is water-methanol injection actually not "modifying" the quench area, the problem is the source fuel.
@DodgyBrothersEngineering6 жыл бұрын
By the time you hear it pinging inside the car damage is already being done. It can even ping long before it is audible that is why you have knock sensors. 23psi is nothing for 98 RON petrol, I was running 30 psi at times on 98, you just need to prevent pinging with fuel, timing and air intake temps.
@TheCrusader20096 жыл бұрын
Why has it not been brough forward to have a relief in the head that the sleeve can slot into thus giving no weak spot for the combustion gases to get through????????? and
@Markitos2036 жыл бұрын
So you have two cut the block twice? Fly cut everything then fly cut the block without touching the sleeves 5 thou below the top of the sleeve? 🤔

So is the squish area prone to detonation because of the shape or because of the higher compression ratio ?
@gordowg1wg1456 жыл бұрын
Seems to depend most on the piston to head clearance in the quench/squish area with the critical clearance being, IIRC, roughly between 20 and 40 thou' (0.5 to 1.0mm), depending on engine and, I suppose, rod material and rpm.. With more there is a bit less turbulence produced but the compressed gases aren't trapped to the point where they detonate or pre-ignite and when it is less the 'quench' affect of the cooler head and piston top pulls the heat out of the fuel/air mix fast enough to prevent ignition. A few years ago there was some experimentation with 'fire slots' (can't recall the specific term) machined from near the outer edge of the quench areas towards the spark plug area. IIRC, the theory was twofold, at least, with the gases in the quench area being 'squirted' towards the spark plug increasing turbulence there and b/ the slots would speed the flame front into the quench area around TDC. Again, IIRC, it was found that less timing was required, which would suggest combustion improved. Anyone tried this or got updates on whether it is still used or fallen into disfavour? [edit] Seems they are also called 'flame'and 'Singh' slots - aftaer a patent holder. More discussion here - speedtalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5907 - and here - rsmotorsport.com.au/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1272 - however it seems to have most value, if any, in higher compression engines with large domes that interfer with the flame front.

It’s a lot easier what they are in a picture, but I’ll try to explain. It’s the area on the sides of the combustion chamber that is flat with the head deck.

If it's possible can you do a how to on rebuilding and blueprinting a 2jz for increased power? I been looking for a step by step (or close to it) on the jz family but it seems like its a dark art.
@hpa1016 жыл бұрын
Hey TJ, you can actually get this knowledge instantly as we have exactly this in our Practical Engine building course. You will learn the steps that we deem important when building a performance engine that are not all done on factory builds, and then this knowledge is demonstrated via an actual step by step engine build. The 2jz is the first example we have as a demonstration. If you have any more questions email me: support@hpacademy.com You can find the course here: www.bit.ly/PracEng - Taz.

I get the feeling that this guy was the wrong person to ask about billet blocks. He seemed to know more about the power production though. I especially like the discussion on squish pads and bore size. Do you get anyone making CNC pistons to match head surfaces for maximum squish? IE the pistons in my AU have a slight dish, but it's perfectly round and the squish pads are not, it appears that the pads are not as effective as they could be

People always wonder, would a billet engine block work in a street car, especially one daily driven to get milk, eggs and bread? Or, are these engines only for race applications where it will require rebuilding? Even I dream about having a billet block for a street car even if its not the best choice.

apostate001 don't see why not, it should be stronger in all aspects compared to stock aluminium cast blocks and they are fine for many high power production cars

Ahh, I'm with you now. Last time I posted a vid of Colins I was corrected by someone to say he was the second fastest, so I guess now he would be the 3rd fastest. Unless you're in the drag racing scene yourself it's hard to keep up with results as some of the teams are not the best at social media updates so you end up getting the details from 3rd parties - Taz.
