Hi, great clip, very well informed. I have a question regarding deceleration, i think the spark advance chart has answered it for me. Can i confirm that when the throttle closed, spark advanced greatly because of the weak mixture and vacuum advance operating as it should but then reduced greatly back to 3-4 degrees because of the real high engine vacuum while engine was spinning at 5000+rpm. Is that correct tuning? Thank you
@hpa1017 жыл бұрын
Under high vacuum there is a limited amount of fuel and air in the combustion chamber. Under these conditions the combustion actually takes longer to occur so we require more ignition advance in order to achieve peak torque (MBT). In an over run situation where you're completely off the throttle this is a bit of a moot point however as the PCM will use deceleration fuel cutoff where the injectors are completely switched off so no combustion is occurring.

Thanks for posting this awesome information. While I normally live in a flat sea-level location. Real world application question -- How does this change when my girlfriend says hey, lets go tot he mountains, and we climb at 15mph in a low-speed cruise? I feel like the car was having a hard time maintaining such a low speed. I suspect the timing making the pedal so sensitive, but also what most drivers want under these conditions. The big question is, are we reaching a load that exceeds the timing we've specified?
@hpa1018 жыл бұрын
As altitude increases, air density decreases which affects both the required fuel delivery and the optimal ignition timing. Assuming your car is still equipped with a MAF sensor, altitude shouldn't be a large consideration since the MAF sensor directly measures air mass which accounts for altitude.
@gregorykusiak54246 жыл бұрын
High Performance Academy in a speed-density calculation the MAP should play a part: not only does density decrease with an increase in altitude, so does pressure as a result.

Wow. U r one smart Aussie!! Does the pcm have a way of learning the octane. Or does it do it by hearing knock? Very informative!! In Los Angeles
@hpa1017 жыл бұрын
Hey Bill, Andre is actually from New Zealand but as both countries have horrible accents it's quite easy to get the two of us mixed up! I am not as experienced as Andre but I don't believe there is an easier way to test octane without expensive testing equipment other than by knock. Obviously you really want to be looking at it from the angle of what power you can achieve with specific fuel before your engine becomes knock limited rather than trying to work out what the fuel you just tipped in the tank is by the same method though. If you are running Ethanol based fuel there is a way to test the percentage of this. Andre has written an article on this topic that you can find on our website if you are interested - bit.ly/ethanolpercentage For a more experienced reply in regards to your octane question you can also ask on our Members Only forum which Andre patrols. It does require Gold Membership but with that you also get access to our weekly webinar lessons. Forum - www.hpacademy.com/forum/ Webinars - www.hpacademy.com/webinars/ Happy tuning! - Taz.

Hi, are you sure that the knock learn factor 1.00 means the usage of low octane table? It is not the opposite what you are saying? The knock learn factor is running based of the knock learn parameters. It learns after clearing some DTC's when the low octane tbale was udes if the knock is present. And if not the knock learn factor will come to 1.00 what means the PCM uses high octane table... Or I am wrong?
@hpa1017 жыл бұрын
The knock learn factor will revert to a value of 0.00 after a reflash and increment towards 1.00 as more knock activity is detected. You can see the affect of this in the data log we're discussing both prior to and after the knock event at 5300 rpm. Prior to the knock event occuring the knock learn factor is sitting at 0.00 but after the knock event the knock learn factor increments to 0.18, hence biasing very slightly towards the low octane spark table. The effect is more prominent when you have a lot of knock activity occurring. This is demonstrated from about 17:30.
@pitaz777 жыл бұрын
I see. I know where is the 'problem'. The gen III engines has the opposite direction of knock learn factor to the gen IV. Today I have logged a drive with my LM7 5.3 without any knocks and the learn factor rised up from 0.69 to 1.00 and then if I looked at the spark advance the PCM commanded from the high octane table.

my question is... How do the tuners in the big cities eg. auckland.. Wellington..all nz. justify $1200 bux for a remap of my 04 vy ss.? all that they are doing is changing a few numbers here and there????
@hpa1017 жыл бұрын
A couple of points to this. 1, it's definitely more involved that changing a few numbers here and there. Tuning any car requires a complete understanding of everything that is being changed. 2, You can't just tune every car the same way, every engine and setup is different. 3, to correctly tune a car you do need a lot of expensive equipment. 4, Like any professional their time is worth money, you have to remember that a mistake on their part could mean disaster for your. Our advise from years of experience is the cheapest isn't always the best. Great think with your specific model is the potential gains are well worth the cost :) It is something that we teach and you can learn, we think learning to tune is enjoyable and rewarding but doing it yourself won't be cheaper.
