@@srich8251 Too late. I already ate it. (LOL) From what I understand there is only one poisonous one that is purple inside. This one was white, so I took a chance. Having said that I'm done taking chances after I ate one tiny flower only to find out that the headache it gave me was due to some sort of snail poison that it contained. No more messing around for me. EVER!!!

Hey Adam, I married a Canadian and now live half the year in New Brunswick, and half the year in St Pete, Fl. My wife and I belong to the Florida Native Plant Society. I'm not very active in the society, but we pay our $70 in dues every year to support them and I try to make it to the yearly Xmas gathering they always have at our counties largest preserve. I was there this year having lunch at a table with people from several different county chapters and started talking about my limited knowledge of mushrooms and how fascinating they were. They were all VERY interested and wanted to know if I could get up sometime and give a talk. I'd love to be our mushroom guy, but I'm not nearly that guy yet. Turns out nobody in that large group knew anyone that knew their stuff about mushrooms and be able to give a talk. So since it's Florida where everyone wants to vacation, I thought I'd throw it out there and see if you'd be interested in maybe coordinating a vacation around our area sometime around the middle of Dec and giving a talk? Curious, I'm positive you give lectures, do you charge a fee and approx how much? I'm not sure what kind of speaking fees we'd be able to drum up for you, but hopefully enough to make it worth your while. If you have the money, no doubt you'd rather stay close to the beach, but if not, I could put you up in very modest conditions for free if it was for 3 days or so. I say 3 cuz my wife and I still work. The preserve is called Brooker Creek and we always go on a guided nature hike afterwards. I pointed out chicken of the woods to everybody. Some russulas. You'd see alligators and other cool stuff you don't get to see in PA. If you could get back to me on this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

The hemlocks are very badly depleted here... though on an optimistic note the little saplings have been having a comeback. Hopefully these fungi will appear a lot here and be a good consolation for the invasive bugginess here. Great video! (as usual)

I've found what looks very, very much like, if not exactly like, Ganoderma Tsugae, growing on Red Oaks here in South Eastern VA. Of course up in the mountains and along the AT, I ran into the Hemlock Reishi many times. Beautiful mushroom in many ways. Thanks Adam for this, of so many other fantastic videos you've done.

I find them every summer.Where my bush camp is,there's an eastern hemlock stump that produces reishi annually.Eastern hemlocks are usually found along creeks,and streams.Plus the eastern hemlock is Pennsylvania's state tree.

Pure serendipity led me to medicinal mushrooms; bought Reishi, Lion's Mane, powder, capsules and chunks of Chaga, noticed prompt physical and mental results so want to hunt them now. I'm in NW Missouri. From St. Joseph and live in Kansas City. Missouri has a humongous forest named Mark Twain Forest. It's so big and I'm 67 years old, I'll stick to what we country boys call the Woods. Had lots of fun at age 7 catching snakes and selling them each for a nickel to a place called Reptile Gardens. Class B Cigarettes were 25 cents a pack. At age 16 a new car cost 2,000 dollars and it was possible to work and earn net pay of 200 dollars weekly. TO ME, America was indeed GREAT then. This is my favorite mushroom to hunt in the spring. The mountain streams in my area of SW Virginia have been prolific with these. I can also tote a collapsible fishing rod with me and try for some native brook trout. I made my first batch of dual extraction tincture out of Reishi last year and take it daily. One of my most memorable moments was tightrope walking across a fallen Hemlock laying across the stream over a ravine that had a nice flush on it. I'm not crazy about heights, or walking the plank, but it was too good to pass up.

YES YES YES ADAM!! I just found u on last video. Bam there it is! Out of research I kept saying Reishi mushroom. Than i found out it is used in China. So i was very confused as to why its growing on my front lawn. We had a tree taken down. N maybe 5 yrs later these started popping up. My intuition sd this is great medicinal food. So then I researched. It is def not tree your describing. It grows from stump and some parts by roots. What also confused me is that some were clustered as others stood alone. Which is exactly what u showed. I have not eaten any mushrooms I see. I just observe, cut open, check for gills or spores and print color. And these turn that gray, bruised color. Oh I can't wait till next yr. Finally it will be 3 yrs n NOW properly identified. Thank you Adam!!! I know I'm gonna say it wrong as being a newbie. But now we have stinky chicken feet. Yuck. But I see they are also for breaking down tree decay. Pew pew lol

Great video Adam. We live in the Poconos. Behind us are 50+ acres of conservation property which is made up of strictly hemlock forest. We harvest G. tsugae every year. Mostly to paint wildlife scenes on. I am skeptical about the healing properties of G. tsugae and chaga. We shall give it a try in tincture form this spring. Thanks for the info!

Love your videos! I spent the late winter learning from them hoping to find Morels in So. Ma so far none,,, however Just realized while looking for the morels I was walking through a mother load of Reishi, I never knew what they were and just figured that anything that shiny and gooey looking had to be dangerous. lol, going out this w/e to scratch the underside to make sure, fingers crossed.

This was such a great video. I found my first reishi mushroom today that’s a foot and a half long! Also, with it being as big as it is I was surprised to see it still has a white under bottom (I know as they mature they turn to grey - brown). Anyways, such a helpful video, especially for a science nut like me who cares to know all about the various species within the genus as well as the specific compounds that benefit ones health!

@@LearnYourLand I live in Washington State, the Western part otherwise known as the Peninsula. We have close to 100 different types of mushrooms, a couple of days ago I found a Reishi mushrooms theat measures 6in by 8in. I had no idea what it was until now. Going back to collect more. 😁

3:56 That tree must be very proud. Anyway... just stumbled over a huge formation of this mushroom hiking yesterday. Is there any prime time to harvest this? Do you let it age longer? can you sow its spores in other dead trees?

Ideally, I like to wait until these mature just a bit... to the point where there's hardly a white margin around the fruiting body. By this point the spores will have most likely matured and the pore surface will turn from white to brownish. I'm not sure how likely it is that we can directly propagate this species into other trees, though as long as we wait until the fruiting bodies (and likewise the spores) have matured before we harvest, we can minimize any potential damage to the species due to unsustainable harvesting (though mushrooms are pretty resilient my in opinion, and perhaps everyone's impact combined is still negligible).

I will let you know next year. I collect the spores when I find a stack and Have been dusting every log that looks worthy. Time will tell. I asked Adam about reishi's life cycle as there is very little to be found on the subject. Trying some at home on hemlock logs I brought in as a control. Also trying appaladum seeding. I let you all know.
