Leather Grading | What to Look for in a Tannery Run | Horween Leather

Are you having problems choosing the best quality leather hides for your leather projects? Here's a video explaining what to look for and the different leather grades you'll see when you visit a tannery. We'll also be talking about how you can work it out if ever you received a bad selection of leather hide.
We'll also be reviewing some leather hides that we got from Horween Leather. Hopefully, these tips help you out on your leather journey when purchasing leather & inspecting leather!
** TIP: When going on a tannery run, you may ask them how much of the leather hide you'll be getting is in Grades A, B, C, or D. Remember to be careful about your leather selections especially if you're crafting large leather goods such as bags. If possible, get small batches first before buying more. **

Buying a side or full there can be different grades on the same hide. An A grade on the whole hide is very rare in my opinion. I use natural veg tan as I mainly tool my leather. Shopping you might see a piece that looks nice but the truth comes out when adding moisture before tooling. That’s when the flaws show up the most.

That one hide with the disease and branding showing should've probably just been extracted for collagen, etc. instead of going to a tannery.
