Making a quick and easy knife sheath by riveting leather.
My website www.bucklehurst...
In this film I am using an offcut of shoe leather to make a sheath for one of my whittling knives. Instead of sewing, I am riveting the leather using little rivets that are available from craft suppliers. To rivet, I simply punch a hole in the leather and then I put a machine rivet through the hole and punch it cap on use a punch and die tool.
Its all very quick and easy. In some later videos I will do some hand sewing (saddle stitching) on leather, and also some machine sewing. Harry

Awesome video, man. I was recently given a very old leather punch set that came with a bunch of rivets and buttons. I wasn't sure what to do with any of it, but thanks to this video, I now know I'm missing some important tools. Not only that, but now I know why those tools are important and what they do. Thank you for making such an informative guide to using some older leather-working tools!

Another master craft demo thank you,I also put all my scalpers Handel in first I know a lot of leather crafters don’t know about wood carving knives maybe you should have mentioned why ,save a lot of “why is the handle in first “ .Its not a British thing ,it’s a wood craver thing .Again thank you for a good demo.

Very nice looking & practical knife sheath. You make it look so easy!, I really like that rotatory knife, it seem you don't have the drag that you have with a regular razor knife. Just might have to look into getting me one of those. Been also trying to do some leather work, have some axes, hatches & an carpenters adz that I need to cover with some other edged woodwooking tools also. Another fine & informational video! Take care.

I didn't check to see if anyone mentioned it yet but you would be well off to punch your holes through your leather using a thin piece of wood on your "self healing" cutting board. I doubt it will "self heal" all those little circular holes. I guess if they didn't heal, you already have noticed the final effect of the punching on the surface of your board, eh?

maybe you guys can answer this before I do it: I was considering making a anvil out of hardwood or machining metal myself, what do you think?
@harryrogers
@harryrogers 11 жыл бұрын
Einherja R Hi if you mean an anvil for blacksmithing you could try and get either a piece of girder of a bit of railway track.......hardwood would not take the hits and will burn.........bear in mind than an anvil does not have to be anvil shape so a big bit of scrap metal might do the job.
@oleggarbeechy5443
@oleggarbeechy5443 11 жыл бұрын
sorry, I meant the small anvil for the kind of work you do on these grommits
@harryrogers
@harryrogers 11 жыл бұрын
Einherja R Right Ok well the hardwood one would work for a while as the pressure is not too great, but it would deform so a machines one would be a better bet - its simply a shallow curved base dish so should be easy to machine up.

A rivet broke on my folding knife holster. After seeing your video, I feel confident to make the repair myself. Thanks. Recently, I saw a video about cleaning vintage violins and the demonstrator used a cutting board like yours to cut up an old T-shirt into small cleaning pieces. I see by Googling "self healing cutting mat" that such mats are readily available and inexpensive. Thanks again. I'll have to go back and see what he used for a knife. That roller knife you used is so much better for cutting. It's the difference between cutting a pizza with a steak knife or using a pizza roller cutter. The roller cutter is much less disruptive to the item being cut.

Happy New Year Harry! I am here on your channel looking for inspiration as well as technique. I am making a Knife Sheath for my daughter's 10-inch and 8-inch Chef Knives. I made her a nice roll that holds all her knives ...I had an Idea to make it sort of knife wallet or handbag with knife sheaths sewn or riveted in as she doesn't always carry all her knives and I think it would be nice to do lacing and a tooled floral pattern. You inspired me to purchase some bridle leather as everything you make looks so amazing. I still do some tooled veg tan panels and mix it with the beautiful bridle leather which may seem strange but I rather like it and I seem to sell the bags I make fairly quickly, Thanks for the inspiration as well as the countless ways I have improved with my leather work watching your videos! Ps got my sewing machine which has been tremendous!

Most of the leathers you mention are cured with various kinds of salts. They will cause corrosion on some metals. Veg-tan leather is the best choice.

Thanks a lot, this is exactly what I was looking for ! i didn't wanted to stitch and to use an extra piece of leather to protect the stitches, and making a sheath like the one you make is really brilliant ! With veg tanned leather, you could use it exactly as if it was kydex I have a few questions : How thick is the leather ? How do you know how much leather to leave around the knife to be able to set the rivet ? When the sheath is riveted, could you then wetten it and put it in a kydex press to give it a tight fit to the knife ? I'm afraid that the water could lead to oxydation on the rivets ?
@harryrogers
@harryrogers 6 жыл бұрын
Gaetan Thomas Hi this is with chrome tan leather so you cannot wet mould it...I have also done a film on making a twybil cover with veg tan and copper rivets. You could use veg tan, wrap your knife in cling film and wet mould the leather around it.
