Adding this bit driver does not void the entire warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act explicitly states that no warrantor of a consumer product may condition the warranty on using any specific brand's parts. They would need to prove that your new part directly caused the failure to deny your claim. Warranties are one of the few areas where the USA actually has consumer protection.

I definitely like the mod you did here. I wish Leatherman would offer that mod on their other models. I’m not a guy who’d pay the $230 plus for the Ark just because of a better blade steel. My Leatherman blade is a backup for my pocket knife anyway and that’s where I invest in a quality blade steel. To be able to use three different styles of drivers with that modification is sweet.

I just recently bought a new leatherman and I was torn from the surge or the arc. I decided to go with the surge just because I feel value for what you get is better then the arc. Plus being able to remove the file/saw and either get aftermarket bosh ones or just oem replacements is great, add the benefit of using the diamond file to sharpen the blade on the surge in a pinch is great as well.

In the Leatherman Q&A on reddit, one of the designers said they didn't put a hole in the awl because they view the implement as a pry/scrape/poke tool and the hole would decrease the overall strength.

I think that if I was going to do a repair on leather or canvas I would wait until I could do a proper repair rather than a patch job since these types of materials are usually found on more expensive gear. Nylon, ripstop, or other fabric would not fair well with such a large puncture to do a in a field repair. Dave Canterbury recommends taping a heavy sewing needle to the back of your knife sheath for repairs which could easily be adapted for todays needs.

I actually like the flat bits because they take up less space. I usually carry a bit elder anyway so I can use 1/4” bits with that. The best thing there is your mod! (Really, where can I get one? You've mentioned this before I think) I seriously doubt knife lovers will generally consider the blade worth it For this price you can get wayyyyy better handling knives. For most knife people, ergonomics is a major factor. Which is why every one of them carries a multitool for anything but the blade, excepting as a backup option. For non-knife people, they will only carr for the steel if they are the type to buy into "x says this is the best". Leatherman is approaching Gerber levels of frustrating for me. But somehow from the exact opposite direction. Every Gerber tool has one or two good ideas but cheaps out so much on the rest the tool itself becomes pointless. Leatherman has one or two decent ideas snd continues to price themselves out of the user-consumer market straight into the lifestyle and collector segment. So nah, they don't pay for that Bruce Springsteen stamp. You do.

While I do love the idea of using standard 1/4" bits in theory, I'm not sure if it's actually better in practice. You lose another tool, and it's not a useless one - that flat driver is the prying tool as well, something you really shouldn't do with a bit driver. Plus, the way the Leatherman bit driver handles bit retention is (albeit only slightly) better than what these aftermarket parts offer. The 4mm bit holder is also really neat, but even a 4mm bit is wider than a Leatherman bit, so they would be hard pressed to include such a tool without taking up more space, compromising on strength, or creating proprietary precision bits that are as thin as their larger bits. And in the end, you still need to carry extra bits for it to even matter. The Leatherman bits are double sided, so in many cases it's just two tools in one, but you still have the pry tool. With the aftermarket, you can still have that two in one, but you lost the pry tool... I really don't think they are just trying to sell proprietary bits. I think most Wave owners probably don't buy a bit kit to start with, and probably only ever consider buying a replacement of the standard one it comes with if they break it. The Leatherman design allows them to fit more into one tool, while still giving you a two-in one with the option of swapping to other bit types, and the ability to replace broken bits. It isn't universal, but I think that it does what most users really need without wasting space. That's not to say that there aren't downsides to the way Leatherman does it, and they could certainly charge less for the replacements. And it isn't to say that this sort of upgrade doesn't make sense for some users, but I don't think I would agree that the standard bit driver is a "big issue" or that this is a "perfect fix" for it. I think there are much more frustrating issues that are much harder to solve with this and other Leatherman tools (not to mention other stuff that the company does).

Awesome modification! Great video! Yes! Leatherman should have integrated the 1/4 bit driver into the ARC! I have been saying it for years…. The Leatherman proprietary bits are crap! The ARC would have been the perfect tool to make the switch over to a standard 1/4 inch bit driver. What is the deal with Leatherman for not including the T6 / T8 bit? It costs pennies for them to make! They should have included the entire bit kit in with the ARC! What’s Leatherman thinking? Their still out to lunch! In a recent video that Leatherman released …. They stated that, they spent the last five years developing the ARC and listening to customer feedback on the feature set to design into the ARC. The video is full of BS. Why would Leatherman spend the extra money to coat the Magnacut Blade? It doesn’t make sense at all! Why add the extra cost? I really wish Leatherman would have added a standard T-Shank to the ARC platform! Why is Leatherman constantly out of stock on so many items? I just scratch my head…… Wondering what in the heck is going on at Leatherman. The ARC with a standard 1/4 bit driver, serrated blade, and standard T-Shank would have really been awesome! 😎👍🏻

You can buy an extension that lets you use normal 1/4" bits with any leatherman bit driver. So with the ARC sheath you would carry your bits and the extender in the pockets. But with the modification Max did, you still somehow need to carry the bits you're gonna need, but now they won't fit in the sheath so I guess you'll have to carry them separately. My only gripe with the ARC is that there's no onboard bit storage, when even my skeletool has that one covered. I'm not about to carry the sheath 100% of the time. I hope the aftermarket will figure out a solution to that. Everyone has their own complaints though and the tool will never be absolutely perfect for everyone. That's kinda the point. They have to find a balance, and no matter what they add or don't add, people will always complain like the world is ending.

This might be a basic question-why do so many multitool manufacturers include a bottle opener and/or can opener on almost every make/model/unit/tool? Wouldn’t it be better to have the tools most people would actually use the most or need? Instead of a can opener or bottle opener, they could redesign the multitool with a much more useful pry bar, knife/blade, possibly include a razor knife, pliers, wire stripper, cutters, a well designed bit holder that can use a huge range of the most popular bits that most tradesmen etc use, of course all the tolls would need to have a lock, and make the tool capable of customization while being covered by a decent warranty? It doesn’t make sense but it seems to me they can make a good tool without the mostly unused can opener and bottle opener.

I've been using the wave since before it picked up the + and have never seen a reason to upgrade it. I see a multi tool as kind of a jack of all trades master of non option. When I need better more specialized tools for something, I have those, know what I mean?

I really want the ARC, but I have to save up for it. Medical bills wiped out my savings. Thyroid issues costs alot. I am hoping that by the time I can afford it, they either do something like this or at least include the T6/T8 bit. I don't feel like I am totally missing out, because thanks to you, I have the Orange G10 Charge. That blade is still close to as sharp as it was out of the box. My Knifeless Rebar has a Awl, so if I think I will need it or go or work in a knife sensitive building, I bring that. I definitely still want the Arc, but just like my Multiforce, Charge, Rebar, and Powerpint, I would just use the wiha double sided bits and just like my Charge, I would have to use the extention. I would definitely consider this upgrade. It's awesome how it can use both 4mm and 1/4 bits.

Did not know that the bit driver mod was a thing. I like it. I don't even have a tool I want to put it in yet, but I went ahead and ordered one. The shipping time is not looking quick, so I'll have time to decide if I want to pick up an Arc or put in something else.
@korgan7779 Жыл бұрын
First off, as always, thank you for your enlightening videos! Secondly, while I like the idea of a magnacut blade, I personally can not justify the price to myself. If I were to spent the money for Magnacut, it would have to be for a primary carry blade be it a folder or fixed blade. I also can't get behind any tool that only uses Proprietary bits. I hate that about the SAK Cybertool series as well all be it easier to glue a 4mm magnet into the socket in order to use standard bits rather than pay $20 a bit due to shipping. The only Leatherman(s) I have are the PS4 and ES4 (I was formerly in IT), I also purchased a PS4 for an EDC kit I made for my Mother-n-law because she is a seamstress (even though she's an Electrical Engineer) and the scissors are very good for nipping threads, the plyers for pulling stubborn needles, and the flat/2D Philips heads for making adjustments on sewing machines. But to each n their own, since I'm medically retired, I don't really have the need for one and can not call it a write off on taxes so the price is outrageous for Me and if I was going to spend that kinda cash it would probably be for a Victorinox. ((If they would bring back an updated Juice line, I'd consider getting another Leatherman, as I'm not paying secondary market prices))

I think the Arc is the leatherman I want to buy. With the bit kit, it allows for the use of bits in a pinch, I don't need tools for the most part for my job, but having an emergency tool just makes sense. Technically, I should either go for the wave or surge, but I really like the idea of fast plier access, and a blade I don't really have to sharpen (not a skill I have.)
@canyonblue737-8 Жыл бұрын
you will eventually need to sharpen the blade, nothing is immune from that... its a skill ultimately you'll need unless you want disposable $230 tools.

Whats your take…swapping out the saw for the serrated blade? Thats a complaint I’ve seen a lot for surge/charge users

I use the wave/charge can opener all the time. I do not like the can opener design on this Arc/P4 free series. Also, the wire stripper notch is to small on the Arc.

@@maxlvledc I had a feeling it wouldn't perform, as it is the same on the P4. As much as I like the Magnacut, right now- money wise, I will stick with my old reliable Charge TTi/Surge/Wave etc.

I have no interest in the Arc but that is a great mod. On a side note, I saw an Ebay seller offering a la carte Leatherman replacement bits, the T6/T8 was offered for $22 plus $7 shipping, basically the cost of buying a whole new bit kit 😆

Im fortunate enough as a "knife guy" that I already have some wiha bit drivers and kits with t6 t8 ect. As someone else said in the coments its not as if you can use the leatherman tool to disassemble itself and it itself is not the best bit driver for things like pocket knife disassembly anyways. Still i agree its weird it isnt there.

The wire cutters on the pliers apparently sucks some people switch it out with a Polish replacement. I would like it better if it was half the weight. If it was mostly titanium it would become much lighter.

I would have to agree the special propriety bit kit is not the way they should continue to go. I got another brand for my working tool because of the full sized bit driver. Good for you
@jj325j2 Жыл бұрын
I've seen the cutters fail multiple times on cutting coat hanger type or softer wire. There's a flaw in the cutters. They chip when used to cut harder things towards the bottom.

My only criticism on the arc is the bit holder is tough to open up solo. I have to open the entire side to get the driver out. On the surge it has a finger notch so you can open up solo

No, the bit drivee is a placeholder for suckers. The bits fall out, but it's just a bad design. All of Leatherman's bit drivers are bad design. It really is too bad that Leatherman chose such a poor tool set. Shame in them, but let's see hom many suckers fall for it.
@HughPecon Жыл бұрын
The bits have not fallen out of either my wave+ or the Surge.
@googleuser6635 Жыл бұрын
@@HughPecon You have to use the tool. Even so, they are inferior bits. Too small, too soft, to useless. The off-center design is bad. Some tools are usable, but the bit drivers are not.

I love magnacut, but it needs to be great treated correctly. I've been looking at this and we'll it works with one hand. My left arm is paralyzed and I just started living full time in my van... down by the river! So, currently I need a good, one handed multi-tool. Like you in pretty disappointed that the blade is coated. I imagine it's coated for a specific reason and I wouldn't be surprised to find out it's because there are some problems with the magnacut
@myvids31158 ай бұрын
I‘m a knife guy and use several Leatherman tools. But the Magnacut blade does not justify the value for me. I live in Europe where knife laws are quite limiting for one hand opening tools. The mod is supercool.
