Leatherman Squirt PS4 - A Closer Look at a Recently Discontinued Keychain-Sized Multitool

Do you guys think the discontinuation of the Squirt PS4 was justified?

Who knows what was their decision based on. I have a blue Squirt P4 since almost 15 years or so, and it is still in premium state (except some of the blue paint that chipped with time and transport).

I keep a Squirt PS4 in my biking pack and another that lives with my hiking gear. I used to carry heavier tools, but over many years I have found the Squirt PS4 to be near perfect. It has quite literally possibly saved my life on at least one occasion and saved my ass on many more. I was coming down a very steep icy trail from a winter ascent of Mt. Adams, second highest mountain in the northeast, when a rivet popped out of my fancy MSR mountaineering snowshoes. The Squirt enabled me to cut part of a circlip off my back pack, force it through the rivet hole, and secure it. Otherwise I would have had a miserable possibly life threatening time getting down. With my bikes probably a dozen times over the last twenty? years, the tool has allowed me to tighten a spoke, twist a mini allen tip, etc. I"ve used the little scissors, in spite of breaking the spring on both Squirts, to cut emergency fabric or remove a skin flap from an injury. Best little tool ever for those of us who like ultra-light activities.

It's their call. Given that it is riveted and light duty, they are more prone to failure and can really only be replaced. The warrantee was eating the margin. For the past couple years, if you sent in a Squirt, it has been widely reported that they would send back a Micra and that just pissed off everyone. The Micra survives because it is scissors rather than pliers based and isn't going to fail. Personally, I think they needed to release a new variant so they could change the warrantee for the new model. Also think they should have brought back the E4, which had wire cutters and strippers, so what do I know?

I cannot imagine a better EDC for my purposes than the PS4 so I was pretty bummed to hear they discontinued it after my scissors broke. I can understand the warranty issue as that is a defining value of Leatherman. I would gladly pay for a new one every couple of years for a new one (I did while it was available) as it is a tool I literally used everyday. Now I use the micra, which, while being more solidly built, its design just isn't as refined as the PS4. I keep hoping that they are working on improvements to the PS4 to re-release it.

love my style PS, holds leatherman bits thanks to a simple mod using a 3D printed part from eBay. The squirt does have a knife blade though which is nice if you aren’t traveling

Wow I’ve got a radio shack variant that has wire cutter pliers. Actually useful at that size but yikes just checked eBay.
