You guys make such a big deal out of a couple of ounces. I would carry a ST300 or a SURGE any day of the week over the wave or charge that are lighter weight but I have to "baby" them and make sure I don't break them during use. As to a tool kit... I think you would be hard pressed to argue that a person could not go down to the parts house and get a few tools and put them in a cash bag in the glove box for less than the $80 cost of the surge... My suggested car kit for people who don't know what to carry is simple... 1:6" channellock 2:8" channellock 3:6" crescent wrench 4:8" crescent wrench 5:4 way tire tool 6:Inexpensive costco/SAMs/husky/kobalt 1/4",3/8",1/2" socket set 7:empty 1gal gas can 8: tow rope 9:better jack 10:jumper cables All this except the gas can fit underneath the spare tire in the hollow space in our Saturn.

Go for 300 if you do not need/want outside tools. If you just required basic Phillip and flat screws 300 is the best option. Go for Surge if your job required to get bits (a lot) and looking not a basic package. Both are heavy-duty without a question. I had the 300, after 10 years under extreme pressure (General Construction) this baby got the medium and small screwdriver broke. Just purchase the Wave Plus with the bit kits and extender. It is the same as Surge just more compact. Perfect for light work/office/house. The Surge is the big brother. Not meaning is better or worst it just bigger. In my humble opinion, Wave Plus is perfect in size. Smaller, bigger, more tool, fewer tools...... the quality is amazing. It will take you a great time to destroy it. Be realistic too, you will not going to big jobs with this multi-tool, do not spec break concrete or weld pipelines. IS Multi-tool to fix small /medium jobs. That is why I think the Surge having the saw and file attachment is not great. You are losing the quick use perform, instead of that changing blades. If that is the case, use the Wave Plus. (My opinion). Note - Forget about the weight, 3-4 oz of a difference does not make an impact in your belt. EVEN is you carry the bit kits and another extension. Just get whatever you feel more comfortable and is better for your use. ALL LEATHERMAN tools are amazing !!! ALL !!!

I'm giving my Surge away to a close friend. FAR too many hot spots in the handle due to the outside tools. It also is a hand pincher. I may or may not miss the scissors but it's not a big deal. I have a Rebar and it's VERY comfortable to use. I've fondled the ST300 a few times and as far as I can tell it's also very comfortable. I'd rather have the ST300 for a tool that I may have to use for an extended period of time. In mere minutes of using the Surge it starts to dig into my hand uncomfortably. Gotta wear gloves with it but I shouldn't have to ALWAYS wear gloves to use any MT.

A waste to buy such great tools and stick them into near-disuse in a car. Many people carry these on belts, hiking, etc. I often have more than just a Leatherman on my belt. Such as a litre of water. Serious long distance or high altitude hikers may have to fuss over a few grams here and there, but not any able bodied working man or soldier. Thanks for the review... always interesting!

I'm building a 4 x 4 zombie apoc/post EMP/invasion type war wagon with a full survival kit to be stowed in the 4 x 4 trailer to be towed behind. For this sort of kit it's not a waste to have it all stowed away, ready to rock. In fact the Surge and related kit will be some of the lightest gear in the extensive kit. But I'm thinking about replacing my Wave tools in my combat and take everywhere bug out kit (and yes I have a place to bug out to) and just using the Wave for EDC~~~~ To Takoda Enno , there is an EOD tool that leatherman makes, you might want that, and also you might look for a used Leatherman Technicians tool, I have one and wish I had 10. I used to be an electronics technician and that tiny tool is awesome

Piemuncher24 I believe you meant to say a reamer punch. On multi-tools a reamer punch and an awl look very similar but a awl is much more blunt than a reamer punch which tends to be a fair bit sharper. But because of the similarity in the tools people still use the two names interchangeably.

I'm in the plumbing service industry and I personally prefer the surge over the ST300 because of the extra bits and the replaceable saw blade and I prefer it over the wave because of the size. It is part of my EDC. As a side note the newer version has the replaceable cutters.
@psychomikeo50010 жыл бұрын
I am sure these are all mentioned. There are both hard wire cutters and stranded wire cutters. Also a wire crimped that works as well as a tool bought specifically for that use. Also there is a standard and metric ruler on the handles.

The Surge has the interchangeable bits and also have the optional bit extender and 21 more different bits which in my books puts the Surge way ahead of the 300 as far as functionality as a car tool. A metal saw and longer wood saw can also be purchased and used in place of the existing saw. The metal saw would be worth it by itself in the car situation. Hands down the Surge.

I have had many different brands, styles and so over the last 30 years of my life. Never have I ever used the scissors. I have carried the leatherman mini with the scissors as the main tool. For at least 10 years. I use the file on occasion. I use the small knife as a personal hygiene tool. And every so often the tweezers when I get a splinter. I want to meet the person who needs the scissors. Please explain it to me.

I would love to see a super tool 300 with a mini screwdriver/scissors. Why Leatherman refuses to allow us to customaize it is beyond me? I think they believe they can make more money that way. I think the 300 is a stronger tool. I bought a black Surge. It arrived with play in the pliers. I sent it back to Leatherman. They did not replace even though it was new. They fixed it by pounding on the stud of the pliers, very noticeble. I could have done it myself better. Bad experience.with them.

I have to disagree with you on this comparison...The ST300 with the larger selection of USEFUL TOOLS for a CAR (eyeglass screwdriver for a car tool?) and the longer shanks on the screw drivers make it a much more practical car tool. Also, when you're working on your car, speed of use isn't really an issue so the OHO blade (while very useful in an EDC tool) and what not aren't really all that useful in this particular POU....maybe if the screw drivers were on the outside and OHO it would be good

As I can use a longer t-shank saw blade on the surge instead of the one that comes with it, I can leave my laplander saw at home. Not quite as effective but close enough. The surge with its slightly more robust blades have also replaced my second backup knife when backpacking. So while the surge is heavy, it is still, with its capability to accept a longer saw blade, the lightest multi tool option for my backpacking system. Love your reviews btw.

I am in complete disagreement of your use of these tools. You don’t spend 60-100 dollars just to stick the thing in a car and let it rust, I carry my ST300 on my belt everyday, everywhere I go. It’s among the best maintenance tools you can own, weather it be using the pliers to bend something back into shape or pulling a broken anchor out of a wall, to sawing and cutting through anything that needs be cut or sawed. The screwdrivers come in handy, although the flathead broke while I was prying something out of a wall in a house I painted, I still find the ST300 to be the most reliable tool I’ve ever owned.

Ha interesting, prior to finding this video I was trying to decide between the 300 and the surge as a better car tool. Nice coincidence with this video!! My car multi-tool presently is a SOG Powerlock. I feel the SOG is actually more powerful than either of these two tools. But ease of access on the SOG is well beyond a nightmare. For that reason I will be replacing my SOG with a surge. And surge over 300 due to outside accessible tools. Speed is vital in emergencies. Great video!!
