Cool video, I’ve been campless for quite a long time now. I did have a family camp my pap and his two brothers had bought as part of their business it was in Rochester mills/Nashville area of Indiana county right near SGL 262, I grew up hunting there from 12 to 37 after pap died and his brothers died and settlement of the business assets between my grandmother and all brothers children the camp became a casualty of greedy people. It’s been about 10 years since the last deer season I hunted there and I miss it more every year. There is nothing like the few days between thanksgiving and opening day at a western PA deer camp with a regular crew of guys,Lost touch with most of the guys. This video makes me sentimental.

Love seeing your guys content, especially showing what Pennsylvania deer camp is like. My family hunts out of a camp in 2F just north of you guys on the Clarion / Jefferson border. Theres just nothing quite like the traditional deer camp experience. We harvested a 6 pointer and three doe opening weekend. There was definitely less shooting this year then in years past for us as well. Good luck on the rest of the season and keep up the good work.

I really wish PA would do the 3 up rule across the entire state. I hunt 5D and 3D where it's 3 total to a side, but I agree with you on PA being very close to a big buck state. Started hunting in 2007 and each year they get bigger and bigger.

Glad to see the no. 4 rifle see service in your deer woods. I have 2 no 4 rifles, no4 mk1 star same as Ron,s and a no4 mk 1 BSA. The star indicates the changes made at long branch. The main one being how the bolt is removed from the rifle. Mine has the better mklllc sight which is graduated from 200 to the optimistic 1300 yards. My thought on John hitting high on the deer is the sight is factory battle sight zeroed for 300 yards on which puts it between 5 and 8 inches high at 100 yards depending on ammo used. I agree with Ron that if the rifle is bedded correctly and the barrel is good they will shoot better than most people think. My long branch rifle has a 2 groove barrel in as new condition and is a very good shooter. Even with mk 7 ball. The Brits call strippers chargers and put the cartridges in the charger alternating rims down up down up down with down against the base of the charger on the two outside and center rounds. The rims will not lock as the magazine has taper in it to aline them correctly. Try it it works and the charger holds the ammo much more securely. Don,t lose the charges they are getting hard to find originals and expensive too... On my BSA rifle which has been nicely sporterized in the classic tradition I put a higher front sight to give the battle sight a 100 meter zero with my sporting ammo. The flip up sight then is out by 200 yards 200 actual is 400 on the sight etc. . On a final note Ron,s rifle was in Canadian ranger service until 2018 as their battle rifle!

As you can probably tell I have a soft spot for this rifle. I use my BSA no 4 as my foul weather rifle for deer and moose hunting. The long branch is pristine and only sees range duty. These rifles can really take a beating and the reality is in rain or snowing days the iron sights are not really a handicap. I reworked a Remington 700 front sight blade for it. Gives the correct height for my rifle with 174 gr hornady bullets. The rem. Sight is brass and easier to file down to fit the no.4 dovetail. The army armourer had a whole kit of various front sights to get the correct zero. You need to make a reverse slot tool to loosen the blade in its dovetail. Gotta luv the Brits. I guess it is part of driving on the wrong side of the road...

My ‘old reliable’ is a Sako75 with Swarovski 8x56 in .270Win there’s no arguing with it either with 156 grain Sako Hammerheads or 130 grain Barnes TTSX’s. Also got my mountain rifle Sako 90 in 6.5 Creedmoor, with a carbon stock to save my knees on those big hills!

Great section on the .303 British Short Magazine Lee Enfield. A fine rifle that served Britain and the Commonwealth well in two world wars. After the war many were sporterised and used for hunting by the post-war generation of gamekeepers and deerstalkers, a great round that has killed tens of thousands of deer here in the UK. As Ron alludes to, a trained rifleman could get off 20 aimed shots in a minute, opposing forces often believed they were facing automatic weapons fire when confronted by an experienced rifle platoon!

I have a 1947 Mk 5 Jungle Carbine and a Golden State Sante Fe marked U.S. Property Mk 4. The magazine is made in Japan and in good condition selling for $175.00 USD at gun shows. The 150 grain PPU .303 British is the only ammunition I found during the Pandemic. I wish that Remington would make the 170 grain Corelokt again. It was a good Deer hunting bullet. The problem with the Enfield and other military rifles was the 100 yard groups were 4 inches. Minute of Deer!

The no 5 jungle carbine has a reputation for being a bit of a kicker. They also were not known for accuracy or holding zero. For the no 4 rifle most of the accuracy problems can be traced to oversized bores (mostly on english built guns) or bad bedding. The bedding can also affect the trigger set up on the no 4 mk1 rifle. There is tons of info on Lee Enfield collector sites about how to bed them to get good ac uracy. My best accuracy for bunting has been with the 180gr Sierra. And contrary to some you can hand load for them if you respect the pressure that they were built for.

There was a MK2, and both Indian and Australia kept the S.M.L.E No1 Mk3 I had a MK2 and absolutely LOVED it! Wish I still had her. Shot numerous 300 yard groups that were about 6 inches for 10 shots. Completely as issued, no modifications. Probably the finest battle rifle you can use for hunting.
